astonex··on Show HN: SmartHome – An Adventure Game
Anyone know how to get out of the stairwell? The floors seem infinite.

It seems like that is actually the end.

astonex··on Show HN: Kubernetes Spec Explorer
This is great thank you. Been a k8s admin for many years but obviously still need to look up fields from time to time, and trying to find it or an example in the k8s documentation is always difficult
astonex··on Goodbye, Rust. I wish you success but I'm back to C++ (sorry, it is a rant)
Just give me a modern C++ like language with fast compilation, easy to pull in packages, and build tooling. Basically Go with no GC.
astonex··on Two upstart search engines are teaming up to take on Google
They do monthly-ish releases https://index.commoncrawl.org/
astonex··on I found a 1-click exploit in South Korea's biggest mobile chat app
Because Uber operates is many countries.
astonex··on The costs of microservices (2020)
There's a spectrum between each function is a separate service, to everything is in one binary. The engineering part is finding the happy medium.
astonex··on Apple Pay let their web gateway cert expire
They've now updated the cert. New one was signed at Oct 16 12:52:49 2023 GMT so almost 3 hours later
astonex··on London’s ancient cart marking ceremony
This just had me reading about Livery Companies of the City of London for an hour. It's great that some history and traditions are kept alive. And now I can walk around the City and keep an eye out for their coats of arms on the buildings.
astonex··on macOS Internals
If you wanted to learn, I really recommend Operating Systems: Three Easy Pieces (OSTEP). I thought it was excellent and pretty easy to follow. https://pages.cs.wisc.edu/~remzi/OSTEP/
astonex··on ATC staff shortages: 11,000 flights cut from NYC and DCA in summer 2023
There does already exist a system for ATC to send info to Pilots via text. Particularly used when in heavy-traffic areas to limit the amount of voice communication.

astonex··on We Ditched REST and Went with GraphQL: Here’s Why
The t in trpc is for typescript
astonex··on C++23 “Pandemic Edition” is complete
I wish C++ would be as easy to build as Golang, and also as easy to include third-party libraries as Golang. Those are the two biggest pain points to using C++ for me.
astonex··on Japanese Manga are being eclipsed by Korean webtoons
In Korea, Manhwa tends to refer to printed comics like Manga, whilst Webtoon refers to online digital comics.
astonex··on More on Twitter's Absurd Headcount
I think most people are in agreement that things were not run well at Twitter, and the headcount was too large. I think most people are upset about the way in which it is being "fixed". It's been very callous
astonex··on UK Government scans all web servers hosted in the UK for vulnerabilities
Korea and Japan are far far behind when it comes to government agencies and their tech competency.
astonex··on British pound hits record low against the dollar
The government just announced tax-cuts backed by borrowing, so likely to increase inflation even further.
astonex··on What would make AWS even better
I would feel better about using AWS if Amazon they treated all of their employees properly, including those in the warehouses doing hard physical labour.
astonex··on What would make AWS even better
A lot of Stripe's success comes from their UX and dev documentation. Something AWS struggles with
astonex··on We're improving search results when you use quotes
Because ranking is very difficult
astonex··on Use one big server
Maybe you would be interested in Supabase. It's what I moved to after having the same experience as you using Firebase
astonex··on Where is there more livestock than people?
Wales

3 million people, 9-10 million sheep

astonex··on Inflation rose 9.1% in June, even more than expected
As are most other (or all?) OECD countries at the moment. It would be better to compare with other countries inflation instead of the 2% target at this point.
astonex··on Ask HN: Games which will help increase my appetite for risk?
Escape from Tarkov

It's Battle Royale esque. All the gear and items you take into a round will be lost if you die. But the only way to acquire more gear is to go into the rounds, loot, kill others for their loot and survive. If you just go into rounds and hide and turtle, you wont find any good gear. You have to be proactive and take risks to loot gear before other players in the round. In EFT, many players have "Gear Fear" where people don't like playing because they can't handle the risk of losing all their gear if they die.

astonex··on What is `Box<str>` and how is it different from `String` in Rust?
I remember trying out some Rust years ago, I stopped after how difficult Strings vs str vs &str was.

I think if I tried again today I could probably grasp it now I have a better understanding of concepts like string views, and encodings.

astonex··on Brave Search Goggles: Alter search rankings with rules and filters
It's not necessarily hard to come up with this independently.

I hadn't heard of Kagi before until recently, and only just seen this Brave Goggle feature, but I had a very similar idea with my own search https://namusearch.com/ - Search using user defined url lists which can be publicly shared

I think I initially had the idea by thinking about uBlock but for Search.

astonex··on Update on Hiring Plans
Amazon too
astonex··on I earned $160k in passive income from writing non-fiction books
Is anyone able to suggest software for writing technical books?
astonex··on When hiring developers, have the candidate read existing code
>I cancel all interviews where I'm supposed to talk to some HR girl instead of an equal

Seems like those interviews are doing their job then if they screen you out

astonex··on YouTube suspends The Hill for playing clip of Trump denying election results
It's all because of ads. Everything is done in the name of getting more advertisers, and more ad-clicks. So everything must be sanitised, and strictly regulated lest you upset the advertisers
astonex··on Cut Russia from GitHub due to invasion of Ukraine
That's not what I mean.

I mean Russians are murdering Ukranians right now.

So the least Russians opposed to it could do is protest even under threat of arrest. Protests already are happening in Russian cities so it is possible.
