astockwell··on Stop using your work laptop or phone for personal stuff, because I know you are
Yep, it's based on device certs.
astockwell··on Stop using your work laptop or phone for personal stuff, because I know you are
Indeed, MSFT launched similar. JAMF was just the most well known in the Mac ecosystem.
astockwell··on Stop using your work laptop or phone for personal stuff, because I know you are
FWIW, with JAMF, your employer can ship it straight from Apple to your door, and still get their MDM all over it the second it connects to the internet the 1st time.

I cannot speak for the grand-parent, but the general idea is captured in Atomic Habits [1].

I really appreciate your comments in this thread, Diederich. They have helped me distill my own similar feelings of uncertainty and uncertainty in my understanding of uncertainty. Thank you.

astockwell··on Advanced Persistent Threat Compromise of Government Agencies
I agree on all fronts. Preparedness is the clearest way. But our economy (and capitalism in general) don't reward preparedness, in fact they often punish for it. I read some article about how building slack into systems is equal to building resiliency into them. How can we build an economy that aligns incentives to be resilient?
astockwell··on Advanced Persistent Threat Compromise of Government Agencies
Paradoxically, the more gross the failure, the less responsibility large organizations seem to take. Thinking of Equifax, or PG&E and the wildfires.

Maybe this is the real rotten core that needs changing. Orgs need to be held to account. And that points to an even deeper core -> we are the ones who need to change, to actually hold orgs to account.

astockwell··on Advanced Persistent Threat Compromise of Government Agencies
APT means Advanced Persistent Threat and is usually the term used for nation-state actors.

astockwell··on 70% of surveyed Americans say they can't do their job without internet
The abysmal-yet-totally-American solution: have employers provide your home internet access. I sincerely hope we never end up there, that should be an Onion headline, but stranger (and sadder) things have happened ahem healthcare ahem.
astockwell··on Ask HN: If WinServer2019 was made free to use tomorrow, would you start using it
I know great strides have been made in recent years, but Microsoft would have to communicate a much better 'configuration automation' story to significantly move the voluntary adoption needle for this crowd.

astockwell··on Containment gets harder every day we delay
It is a bit like comparing interest rates on your credit card balances while still spending more than you earn: we may not get much choice about what is done in 21 days, but we have to stop the bleeding now either way.
astockwell··on Ask HN: What job can a “jack of all trades” look for?
I will run contrary to many suggestions already here. It seems (from the 3 example titles you give) that you want to stay technical/individual contributor. If that’s the case, you can absolutely take your breadth of skills to a big company, whether an established tech company or a technical team within eg the F500. I personally identify as a generalist also, and I (through complete accident and happenstance) moved into cybersecurity (not appsec to be clear, appsec is a team within cyber). Basically one of the most lucrative niches out of my broader range of experiences. It has worked out well for me.

Tl;dr - figure out which of your experience areas align with an area that’s either lucrative to you or of high interest for you for other reasons, and pursue that at a large company. At higher technical levels, your soft-skill and cross-dept experience will further accelerate your career.

astockwell··on Ask HN: What are some examples of good database schema designs?
After searching for years for what that design was called, I finally read somewhere that it’s the “property bag pattern”. Seemed fitting.
astockwell··on Ask HN: What Skills to Acquire in 2020?
Love Jeff’s stuff, there’s a reason he has such a following. His deep dives into pelvic tilts and shoulder issues have been a huge help to me also.
astockwell··on An Update on Bradfitz: Leaving Google
Godspeed, Brad has always been an inspiration for maintaining your humanity in the immense machine. Excited to see what's next.
astockwell··on Ask HN: Courses/resources to improve my self-esteem and believe in myself more?
Personally I don’t think it has to be professional, but it should probably be a skill of substance (e.g. not mastery of video gaming). Fitness, a martial art, carpentry, a musical instrument, or a trade (plumbing, etc) all come to mind. And specifically, master of just 1 element of one of those, at a time.
astockwell··on Ask HN: Courses/resources to improve my self-esteem and believe in myself more?
Totally agree with this. Getting a trainer is key if you are new - they take all the brain work out of it for you: so you just have to show up. They will also ensure your form is good, so you don’t get injured 2 months in (which happens when people lurch off the couch and into a 5x/week CrossFit regimen). If that’s cost prohibitive, read Starting Strength or check out 5x5 (five by five) for workout programming.

Regarding self-esteem: in addition to improving your physical appearance and general feeling of well-being, exercise also teaches you intimately how to use your will to push through problems/adversity, which builds self-confidence immensely.

Building yourself is also more rewarding than building any work project: nobody can take from you what you build for yourself, and you get out of it directly what you put in. How often can you say that about work?

astockwell··on Ask HN: What were your most impactful podcast episodes from 2019?
The Jocko Podcast [1]. Hands-down has changed my attitude and life for the better. It’s about daily disciplines, leadership, human nature, history, and BJJ. Discovered it before 2019 but it’s definitely been the most impactful.
