This plus DAO’s (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations) could get really interesting because in a blockchain game you could have the high council being players that can make decisions in game, that were themselves elected by the community.
Furthermore, when you introduce real economics into virtual worlds, you start to output something that starts represents a digital society, which is the basis for the metaverse.
Bravo to Epic for having the foresight and curiousity to entertain this new paradigm shift.
Axie Infinity just recently raised $152M at a $3B valuation, and it's not going away. People from the Philippines are making a livelihood out of this game, and that is so powerful I can't even put it into words.
The genie is out of the bottle so to speak, and the entire world is going to get into P2E games and the metaverse sooner rather than later. If Steam is really serious about not entertaining this, there is a HUGE opportunity for a new contender to come in and disrupt them by allowing blockchain-based games. WebGPU + WebAssembly in particular is a fascinating way to deliver binaries without having to go through walled gardens, and you can today hook these games up wallets like Metamask. I'd go as far as to say a meaningful part of web3 will be decentralized gaming on the blockchain.

No walled gardens asking for a 30% cut, direct embedding of games inside a developers site, and for players they don't have to install anything locally. This is what my startup is building with our browser-games platform.
The face tracking via webcams is intriguing, I have implemented something similar in three.js for live synced facial expressions. I think this tech is the future of the metaverse, especially when you think it's applications VR and how your movements will be mapped 1:1 to your virtual avatar. On the topic of VR, I fully expect Roblox to launch on Quest 2 and future headsets bringing all of the content created for the platform into a new immersive paradigm.
Roblox is probably going to take things a step further on the virtual goods side and allow for items in-world to be minted on the blockchain as NFT's. Cosmetics, worlds, games, can all be owned by the users, which will see a massive uptake as it means better monetization for content creators. Their end goal is for everyone to use Roblox for work, play, and socializing, with all three blending into one to become the #1 place society spends time online. Just like billions of people today have a profile picture and page, and create content, their will be a 3D equivalent that equates to having an avatar identity, and spaces you've created and customized. That's the metaverse right there.
This is going to be incredibly disruptive to most social networks, as it means we're moving to a persistent, shared simulation that affords users a better sense of presence and being together.
We're in for a truly wild ride, folks.
WebGL and WebAssembly in particular represents a new way for game developers to get their projects onto Xbox without needing Microsoft’s approving and needing to give up a 30% cut. That’s powerful.

However, with the introduction of WebGPU, WebAssembly, and WebXR the browser will be able to host immersive, spatial websites.
I wrote an article that goes further into this if anyone is interested:

Browser-based games and real-time 3D applications are the one's I'm most excited about, personally but that may be because I'm developing a WASM startup in this space.
