asteroidbelt··on BMW heated seats subscription costs $18 per month in South Korea
Imagine living in cold climate. Heated seats is very nice to have in certain places where temp below -20C is not uncommon.

(Paid monthly subscription is a different issue though.)

asteroidbelt··on Atlassian is 20 years old and unprofitable
YouTrack search bar compared to Jira endless clicking in filters is day and night.

But I didn’t use Jira for years. I hope I never will. To the degree, I’ll need 20% more pay for comparable job if they use Jira.

asteroidbelt··on Elon Musk Tesla email: Remote work is no longer acceptable
You can do it already by installing malware on employee computers.
asteroidbelt··on Russia opens criminal investigation of Meta over death calls on Facebook
It is more complicated. It is not exactly rule of law in Russia. If you are accused of overthrowing the government, having a page on Facebook, which is extremist organization, might be considered aggravating factor.
asteroidbelt··on Apple announces 27-inch 5K Studio Display
Sadly no built in KVM. I like my BenQ monitor for having KVM (among other reasons).
asteroidbelt··on Someone should probably start a bright home lighting company (2019)
I would reply, but since those angry warriors downvoted my very reasonable comment, I should not.

Perhaps I should stop trying to talk on hacker news at all.

asteroidbelt··on Someone should probably start a bright home lighting company (2019)
Power waste is not an issue even in summer. Power production is driven by demand. Turn on more lights, and electricity companies will produce more electricity, and eventually they will make it cheap. Turn off the lights, and they'll do nothing because there's no demand.

That was my pitch for nuclear power.

asteroidbelt··on Ask HN: Should I give my employer all my medical records?
At expense of other people. But also at expense of personal growth.
asteroidbelt··on Ask HN: Should I give my employer all my medical records?
Yes, knowing the context would be interesting although probably irrelevant to the answer.

I’d just quit, but calling a lawyer sounds right too.

But for example it would be reasonable (albeit inappropriate) to ask medical records of someone taking paid sick days too often.

asteroidbelt··on Ask HN: Should I give my employer all my medical records?
Calling people you disagree with idiots is not the smartest thing to do.
asteroidbelt··on Ask HN: Should I give my employer all my medical records?
Are you sure employers in US are forbidden from asking medical records?

Wikipedia says about discrimination, not about medical records.

Also, it is legal to fire people based on their vaccination status which is obviously a medical record.

asteroidbelt··on WebAssembly: The New Kubernetes?
> any language that targeted JVM bytecode

Any language similar to Java. Small subset of languages.

asteroidbelt··on WebAssembly: The New Kubernetes?
Java application server could run only Java, had really no control over the application (eg kill it if it uses too much memory or throttle it’s cpu), and provided hard to use APIs.

The idea was great, but it was premature and not well thought.

asteroidbelt··on Universal basic income could come to California colleges
We need more stem education, but not as much arts or political science
asteroidbelt··on Mozilla's Firefox Relay to be added to disposable-email-domains blacklist
> Gmail .. should be on the list as well, because creating email addresses there is so quick and easy

GMail does antispasm. It’s easy to create a disposable gmail, but it is much harder (I supposed) to use that address for outgoing spam/fraud/etc.

asteroidbelt··on Ask HN: Firefox connection problems after enabling DoH?
> They can't do it like that directly

Why?

asteroidbelt··on Ask HN: Firefox connection problems after enabling DoH?
True. But revenue would be significantly smaller (other engines cannot afford pay high per click, and lack of competition drives the price per click down), and revenue is already barely enough to cover Mozilla needs (see recent staff cuts).
asteroidbelt··on Ask HN: Firefox connection problems after enabling DoH?
There's enough Chrome alternatives to be considered "amd to my intel": Chrome based browsers like Brave, and Safari.
asteroidbelt··on Ask HN: Firefox connection problems after enabling DoH?
Google is the largest financial supporters in Firefox, they buy Firefox search bar. If they wanted to destroy Firefox, they’d already do it by simply cutting that revenue stream.
asteroidbelt··on Apple execs: Let's take a 30% cut of Uber and Lyft's membership programs (2018)
But also because Good Small Corp D and Good Small Corp E would have to follow the same rules.
asteroidbelt··on Youth suicide attempts soared during pandemic, CDC report says
> A once is a lifetime catastrophic event

This is one point of view.

A different point of view is this is comparable to bad flu year, and all hysteria is caused by msm.

> It has affected our lives in so many ways

It has. But not the pandemic, but government and media overreaction to it.

asteroidbelt··on James Webb is fully deployed
They changed the link. It pointed to a tweet initially.
asteroidbelt··on James Webb is fully deployed
I don’t see how that’s fair.

If that’s insignificant, why invite them? If that’s significant, why not mention them?

asteroidbelt··on James Webb is fully deployed
From Wikipedia:

> NIRSpec (Near InfraRed Spectrograph) will also perform spectroscopy over the same wavelength range. It was built by the European Space Agency at ESTEC in Noordwijk, Netherlands.

and more.

asteroidbelt··on James Webb is fully deployed
No mention of ESA again, looks like it is solely NASA project, which it is not.

Shame.

asteroidbelt··on Brussels Airlines makes 3,000 unnecessary flights to maintain airport slots
There’s no goal to reduce emissions from planes. There’s a goal to reduce overall emissions.

If (hypothetically) co2 tax would lead to reduction in other industries but keep emissions unchanged in planes, this is fine.

asteroidbelt··on Mathematicians Outwit Hidden Number Conspiracy
I would not click the link if not "conspiracy" in the title.
asteroidbelt··on Facebook said my article was false – now the fact-checkers admit they were wrong
> No, it absolutely is not fine for the President to spitball dangerous ideas like that on live national television.

Maybe. This is topic for another discussion. For now it would be appropriate for you to admit you were wrong. Factually incorrect.

> I don't understand your reflexive defense of Trump.

I don’t defend Trump. I defend facts.

> There's a million things to hang the guy for

Perhaps you came to this conclusion after trusting fake news.

asteroidbelt··on Facebook said my article was false – now the fact-checkers admit they were wrong
> genius Trump only suggested injecting bleach

This statement is still grossly misleading at best.

(Especially because this lies about "drinking bleach" was actually spread by Joe Biden and repeated numerous times in left-leaning media.)

What he said is he suggested to study it. Which is fine. He never "suggested" injecting it or drinking it.

> nobody got hurt

American democracy got hurt. People belief in system is reduced.

asteroidbelt··on Facebook said my article was false – now the fact-checkers admit they were wrong
> The guy who thought maybe you could cure Covid by swallowing bleach?

He never said that or anything like that and we don't know what he was thinking.

You are spreading fakes. In a thread about fakes.

> I sincerely do believe Trump is that stupid.

When left-wing media does the fact-checking, Trump indeed looks bleak.
