asmithmd1··on Wink Subscription – Pay $4.99/month or lose access to devices on May 13
If the US had functioning regulators, they might require Wink to let you update the device's server
asmithmd1··on The patent on SIFT expired yesterday
Yes, you are free to pay a lawyer and sue to attempt to invalidate a patent using your blog as evidence of prior art. Of course whichever side can afford it, will bury the other side in motions and discovery requests until they win.

I tried to cheat this exact same way with a test on the the Newton–Raphson method. My program even showed intermediate values so I could show my work.

The interesting thing about the black box is that it is square to the frame of the image and slightly skew to the text boxes in the original intelligence product. This indicates the image posted is not simply a camera phone snap posted directly to Twitter, the image was edited before it was posted
asmithmd1··on Peloton S-1
I was surprised to see how low the gross margin is on their subscription business, it has only recently broken above 50%. The cost of revenue for their subscription business includes licensing the music in their workouts, and the costs to operate their NYC and London studio.

I was also surprised to see the margins on the bike itself are about the same as on the subscription business. They have room to lower the price of the bikes to get more customers hooked on that sweet, sweet recurring subscription revenue.

asmithmd1··on Analog Spring Reverb: How it works
I am friend of Mark Bartel and helped him a little with the "wire trees" that he custom molds. I made many suggestions along the lines: "Why don't you just..."

He constitutionally can't - he is the definition of uncompromising. I don't play guitar, but I want to buy one of his amps because of how it is made. Take a look at this:

https://guitar.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/bartel-amplifi...

And every one is exactly the same because he writes and then follows explicit directions for making every connection.

asmithmd1··on Analog Spring Reverb: How it works
I agree the amps are art. Compare the Bartel amp to this

https://www.designboom.com/art/leonardo-ulian-technological-...

- cool, but they don’t work

asmithmd1··on Analog Spring Reverb: How it works
Check out the build quality of Bartel Amps. Mark Bartel has been hand making every part of the amps he designed for over 20 years. He is an EE who makes product decisions based on science - not marketing

asmithmd1··on The Financialization of the American Elite
The history of the Spanish Conquistadors successful search for physical gold in the new world has been written and it is a period of inflation in Spain. Instead of focusing on bringing back real wealth from the new world (coffee, chocolate, tomatoes, potatoes), they brought back useless yellow metal that just caused inflation.

The idea is to match the money supply to the real wealth in the economy. I don't disagree with your assertion that we are seeing a decoupling of money from real wealth, but the gold standard is no guarantee against inflation - or worse, deflation.

asmithmd1··on Flying with Miniature Horses
The article you cite references a study that looked at mass shootings from 2006-2016, I am sure Las Vegas shootings and other more recent ones would changes the statistis. It also breaks down shootings into a category called "public" - which is the one most people are interested in. Non-black perpetrators committed 70% of these public shootings
asmithmd1··on Flying with Miniature Horses
Your idea is similar to MA gun license requirements - you need two non-relatives to sign your application before you submit it to your local police to decide if you meet the requirements to hold a gun license
asmithmd1··on Flying with Miniature Horses
Yes, the only thing the Mass laws do is stop gun deaths "caused by negligence, suicide, or accident" and justifiable homicides - self defense or police shootings
asmithmd1··on Flying with Miniature Horses
> Possession of rifles and shotguns

This specifically does not mention handguns. Handguns have much narrower exemptions: https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXX/Cha...

IANAL but a starter pistol with no ammo is probably ok, but hey, it is only 2 1/2 years in jail if you are convicted.

(edit - fixed typo)

asmithmd1··on Flying with Miniature Horses
IANAL but you should read the actual law, not a summary even when it is from the state:

https://malegislature.gov/Laws/GeneralLaws/PartI/TitleXX/Cha...

I am a Mass resident and know not to mess with Mass gun laws - they carry a minimum of 2 1/2 years in jail.

Total coincidence - MA has the lowest gun death rate at <1/3 the national average and <1/6 some of the most dangerous states: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Firearm_death_rates_in_the_Uni...

asmithmd1··on Flying with Miniature Horses
Do NOT fly into Massachusetts with a gun. To have a gun in MA you must have a MA gun license
asmithmd1··on Mr. Darcy’s Ten Thousand a Year
Cornelius Vanderbilt's story is amazing. He quit school at the age of 11 to work on his father's ferry in New York Harbor. At 16 he started his own ferry moving freight and passengers between Staten Island and Manhattan. He built his fortune by investing in steamships and later railroads
asmithmd1··on Lyme Disease Cases Are Exploding
My theory is the discontinuation of large scale DDT spraying. When I was growing up in the 70s and 80s in the northeast of the US I would see maybe 1 tick a summer and I never saw an eagle or a hawk. Now I see plenty of both. Maybe we could resume DDT spraying for a year or two and knock the ticks back

asmithmd1··on Maker Faire halts operations and lays off all staff
I was a Make magazine subscriber since the second year and gave several gift subscriptions. I contributed a couple of small (unpaid) pieces to the magazine, and was an exhibitor (also unpaid) multiple times at the NYC Maker Faire. I thoroughly enjoyed the Maker Faire set-up days and thought they made exhibiting worthwhile. It was like having a back-stage pass to the Oscars of Makerdom - all the stars were there and happy to talk shop. I knew I was creating free content for them that they were profiting from but thought I was getting a fair deal.

My subscription lapsed just about every year for some glitch or another and they were unable to convert any of the gift subscriptions which should have been very easy sales.

My opinion about supporting Make Media changed after the RealSexyCyborg incident in the winter of 2017:

https://www.buzzfeednews.com/article/kassycho/a-male-ceo-has...

Bunnie Haung (who I met at a Maker Faire set-up day) vouched for her and Dale still persisted in slandering her. I let my subscription lapse and quit going to the NYC Maker Faire. 2017 was the Maker Faire highest attendance and has been declining since then.

asmithmd1··on 10-Year Treasury Constant Maturity Minus 3-Month Treasury Constant Maturity
It looks like a 10Y-3M inversion has predicted each of the last 3 recessions by about a year with no false positives in the last 35 year.

This article is nonsense. Off the top of my head: Accenture, General Dynamics, Northrup Grumman, and M&M/Mars have corporate headquarters in the suburbs around Washington. Not such a big deal now, but AOL also through off quite a bit of wealth for a while.
asmithmd1··on Boeing Was ‘Go, Go, Go’ to Beat Airbus with the 737 Max
A "more right" solution would have been to implement a "stick pusher" system to make it obvious to the pilot what was going on. But that would have required pilot training and punctured the illusion that the plane can be flown by any pilot who has flown any 737 made since the 1960's
