aslilac··on I decided to stop working on Mighty
yes! this is the same reason I’m glad Stadia died. “cool demo” does not equal “practical business”, and local compute will always be superior to cloud compute.
aslilac··on Ask HN: Programming without a build system?
Definitely possible to not worry about make or autoconf, you just have to either

- not need any dependencies - or use almost any more modern systems language like Rust, Zig, or Go

aslilac··on Google added HEVC support in Chrome
web features really are getting bloated, why does chrome need air conditioning? /s

If you're looking for a React dev who actually understands hooks and functional programming, I'm your girl :)

aslilac··on An opinionated approach to GNU Make
Yet this has been settled in Makefiles for a long time: use tabs.

OP only seeks to sit on a high horse about how tabs are bad and to divide an ecosystem which is already pretty consistent. I’m so tired of people insisting tabs are evil and that using them somehow makes you “wrong.”

aslilac··on Erg: a statically typed language that is Python compatible
I’ll also vouch for it.

Plus, at least half a dozen highly funded people have tried to recreate TypeScript and have failed. Microsoft is flawed, but they can make a mean type checker.

aslilac··on Erg: a statically typed language that is Python compatible
This is the real question
aslilac··on Help pick a syntax for CSS nesting
I wish there was fourth option for “brackets but optional”. I like the brackets syntax, it’d be nice to omit them if you only have rules starting with &, similar to the “directive but optional” syntax.
aslilac··on Deno’s July 13th incident update
Yeah, you make a particularly good point about acknowledging what data we don’t have more directly. Thanks for being constructive about it, I do really appreciate it.
aslilac··on Deno’s July 13th incident update
We actually don’t, hence the vague language. As mentioned at the bottom, this incident really revealed some wholes in the insights we have. I think it’s also important to remember that Deploy is still in public beta, specifically because we are aware that it’s not perfect yet.
aslilac··on Turns out GCC has imperative argument handling
Well known to people who are knowledgable in all the intricacies of the build tools used for systems programming, which I'm pretty sure is a much smaller group than you're assuming here.
aslilac··on The Move Programming Language
Anyone else think this was just gonna be a through back to https://github.com/rsms/move?

Coming to find out it's just some crypto drivel was a huge let down.

aslilac··on Ask HN: Why are Git submodules so bad?
You completely missed the problem that submodules are actually supposed to solve though. Using them for either of those cases would almost definitely be the wrong choice.

What they're really for, is vendoring someone else's code into yours. They're still not great even at that, but sometimes they're the best option.

aslilac··on Toyota warns about rushing into electrification
They’re only skeptics about electrification when you’re talking about battery electric. If you start talking about the horse they’ve spent the last decade backing (HFC) they’ll change their tune.

Toyota is just bitter they backed the wrong horse. Their blatant lies and lobbying have ensured I’ll never buy one of there cars again.

aslilac··on An argument for a return to Web 1.0
Haven’t actual read it yet, but I was writing something last night about how I miss the early days of Web 2.0, which I refer to as “the teenage web”
aslilac··on Alive
I tried from my phone initially and it just said "use your computer". Won't even let you see the stream.
