aslewofmice··on Everything We Know About What Data Brokers Know About You
And to think that this article doesn't even touch on the ability marketer's have to track you across multiple devices, locations, and other insight that Facebook allows.

I believe we're at a point where a legitimate proof of concept could emerge where given a first and last name of a person, one could theoretically track a person's location and browsing behaviors for an indefinite amount of time. Granted, it would require that the person not clear their cookies, grant geo-location on their phone and that you have a bit of money to ensure you win enough ad impressions in that time period. The takeaway would show that people aren't as anonymous as they think they are and that with enough money and motivation, someone could gain valuable insight into your behaviors.

My bet is C&C instructions.

IRC traffic is commonly blocked, but HTTP traffic directed to Twitter is generic enough to get through most locked down networks. I doubt whoever is behind this cares if it's public data and that people see what's being posted. Public access just means any newly compromised computer can access it without anything more than a single HTTP request.

If we had access to the IP(s) posting the tweets, it'd be pretty easy to get an idea if they were malicious or not. But where's the fun in that

Hasn't Facebook always done this? I've always done this to vet people I deal with through Craigslist...

The last image of the US Map caught my eye. San Diego is not located directly below San Francisco. Come on guys, show a little bit of effort here and take 5 seconds to look at a map.

I understand it's a mock-up, but it just shows carelessness. If I can notice it, it's just one less reason for me to care.

aslewofmice··on Will Developers Ante Up for a Gambling API?
I'm curious as to how this model will work if users can't easily deposit money online. I can only imagine they will inevitably face the same problems as online poker where credit card companies and banks will block any transaction related to gambling sites or 3rd party eWallet proxies.

In the early online poker years, you could easily deposit directly from your bank or credit card. Then banks started blocking these transactions. The online casinos came up with the eWallet proxies such as Neteller that served as an intermediary between the banks and the poker sites. Those too were blocked. Then gift cards became the main funding source, and eventually those were blocked. Eventually the process ended up with direct wire transfers or payment-by-phone. As each deposit method was blocked, it became harder for the casual players to get money online and they stopped playing.

How's your mobile capability? Are you tied into any Mobile specific exchanges? I'm guessing you're running your own ad server... is it performing well for Mobile devices?

Judging the by the screenshots, it looks like a pretty clean interface. It really surprises me how convoluted RTB UI's are when it's really not a complicated workflow.

Great job, very impressive! There's a lot of potential in this space...

Hope they get bought out until they come up with a better idea?

(Not knocking the product, or saying they're doing it wrong; just agreeing it's difficult to immediately see the business model)

aslewofmice··on The Python Standard Library - Where Modules Go To Die
I felt that way about some of the standard documentation but was relieved to find: http://www.doughellmann.com/PyMOTW/

I also highly recommend checking out Doug Hellman's book 'The Python Standard Library by Example'. He presents every (or almost every) standard library module with simple explanations and plenty of examples.

aslewofmice··on Indexing the hidden web
I think people are thinking too much about beating Google solely with technology, which users clearly don't give a crap about. The best play against Google lies in branding a search engine.

I'd love to see someone to pony up and purchase a first-generation search engine (ie: Altavista, Lycos, Hotbot) that still has some nostalgic branding left. AOL, Yahoo, MSN have all been around since that generation but they've all gone through failed re-branding issues in a struggle to keep up with Google.

Pair it with a solid technology backend (DuckDuckGo) and you might actually have a chance to pick up the biggest US internet user demographic (Gen-Y) that happened to grow up with those sites.

Do you work from home using the same IP?

If I understand your question correctly, the answer would be 1. In most cases, they're doing cookie based tracking and you wouldn't have any crossover unless it was site specific retargetting and you've logged into an account on both platforms. If there's any crossover, its because you have the same browsing behaviors on both platforms.

aslewofmice··on A Word to the Resourceful
I think it's fair to say there's a difference between 'hand-holding' and 'asking for advice' in PG's scenario. Hand holding would be having to constantly be checked up on, much like a child. This would be the person who receives the number to a VC and doesn't bother to figure out how to capitalize on it, if they even attempt to reach out at all. However, being resourceful would at least be able to figure out a rough game plan and think up a few broad questions for advice so they can take full advantage of the situation. Utilizing resources to have an advantage on other candidates.
aslewofmice··on Google's Anti-SOPA & PIPA Page
Does it bother anyone else that they've basically required a gmail just to read the PDF infographic? Sure, you can right-click "save-as", but the kind of people they need to be speaking to aren't going to 'know how'/'go through the trouble' to view it...

On the other hand, I think Wikipedia nailed its execution with the teaser and overlay. I know we can't expect a for-profit company like Google to completely shut-down, but a subtle interference into everyone's use of the site would have been nice to see. I guess I feel a little let down with this.

*EDIT: After reading some comments, it looks like this was just a permissions error. While it alleviates some of my disappointment, I'm still not completely sold that it will speak loudly to many Americans.

aslewofmice··on Zaarly: How To Get 100,000 Subscribers In 3.5 Months – with Bo Fishback
There's absolutely more to this video than just that. I've been pondering the whole "chicken & the egg" predicament for my launch; just as recently as earlier today. I've yet to find/hear a good recent startup story about going 0-100 in a heavily 2-sided business. A lot of the bigger, hyper growth startups (Yelp, GroupOn) seemed to single marketplace launch. It's great to finally hear of someone doing a large launch and the tactics they used.

Thanks Andrew, I felt it was one of your best interviews.

Absolutely one of the better ideas I've seen lately! An original idea with a lot of wiggle room for future growth.

I think it could be pretty cool if users had the ability to reference a higher quality audio source (when available - something on Archive.org or uploaded mp3s).
