I'm starting to see these pundit confessions coming in more and more. (See 1:30 for about 30 seconds for the gist. 11:50 for the fake tears...) The politician playbook is to beg for mercy, move on, and hope for the best. Since a journalist at her level (seems to me) is as disconnected from reality as the politicians they exclusively cover, it doesn't surprise me that she would try the same play. The public has set expectations pretty low for everyone connected professionally to this circus. Personally, I think the time has long passed to cut ties.

Bill Mahrer is another example of someone desperately trying to remain viable by pretending to be a neutral commenter. In reality, he helped birth the whole thing and certainly nurtured it as it was feasting on traditional or religious lifestyles and ginning up laughs and eyeballs for media giants.

askin4it··on Universal basic income of £1,600 a month to be trialled in England
Probably quite a lot.

Ny guess is that rents rise since landlords know everyone has an extra cash infusion now. Until it settles out merchants will pick over this until it is eaten up.

Was part of sales in gov subsidized market and the gov grant was a big part of figuring price. That is to say "inflating" the price for the customer.

Just human nature. UBI will be the same.

You really should at least make an effort to get what the author is telling instead of just reading their words. It's astonishing how narrow minded people can be when the fixate on unrelated things that the author is saying instead of understanding what they meant.
askin4it··on Lessons from Washington State’s New Capital Gains Tax
Stopped at "For decades, the wealthiest Washingtonians have gotten out of paying what they truly owe in state and local taxes."

Taxes as punishment for having wealth.

Were laws broken? Doubt it, at least not at scale. Leave people with money alone!

It's not just nerfed on human relationships, it won't help you avoid ad exposure without a warning that many ads are quite good for you and exposure would be a net positive even if you didn't want it.

I guess it knows what's best for me.

unAmerican...

I'm American. I've always liked this way of describing things that we don't like. It somehow (to me) implies something. Maybe I don't know what that is, but it seems mostly anti-bad.

If anyone wants to hate on me, I think that HuAC was tragically misrepresented to the public, and the Hollywood blacklists should have been longer and wider. Sorry, but that's how I feel about it. Many of the jokers that ended up there were acting very irresponsibly and as if there were no consequences for their actions. The actions being a hidden alignment with an internationalist organization actively seeking to undermine the USA from within. (Something we can accomplish without any outside help.)

askin4it··on Emissions are no longer following the worst case scenario
It's not a "talking point." It's my point of view because the preponderance of evidence seems to indicate that the media, as a group, cannot be trusted.

It's not a debate. Wake up. Much (most?) of the info going into your brain is not just false, it's deliberately manipulative.

askin4it··on Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (2014)
No matter how much you don't like it, the use of that weapon was neither revenge or murder.

I personally don't see the world in terms of revenge and murder, so it's hard for me to understand how such specifically personal behaviors factor into the first Atomic attack.

askin4it··on Bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (2014)
For any one likes science history non-fiction, check out Richard Rhodes, The Making of the Atomic Bomb. From idea to aftermath of use. Very interesting work written very compelling style.

Please stop "making sure" when it comes to MY thinking. Also on behalf of everyone who doesn't like being told what or how to think, please stop "making sure".

If you really need to "make" something "sure" please pick something real and not a political football.

In the early 70's alarmists were "making sure" everyone was panicking about an ice age.

See..no ice...

Wait a while....I predict the alarmists will change to something else when people no longer buy the current looming disaster.

Please stop participating in the most recent fashionable doomsday fantasy.

askin4it··on A mental health crisis in science
What does Opportunity have to do with science?

In this case, it seems like the Opportunity is an opportunity to get trapped in a system that is likely to be both unsatisfactory and unproductive.

My fear is that we've crossed the event horizon and we can't rollback all the alterations that accumulated over the years and gotten academics into a cul-de-sac or box canyon. (Pick your metaphor...) next stop, the singularity, where we will have the opportunity to experience life as a dimensionless point...

askin4it··on Timnit Gebru on her sacking by Google, AI’s dangers and big tech’s biases
That statement you made seemed reflexively progressive to me rather than an actual thought out position.

Question: why does everything have boil down to a mortality lesson? Why can't white guy from the other thread have a little gripe? What's the purpose of scolding him , telling him that his opinion is wrong, and then treating him like a kid by sending a link to a cartoon that casts him as a snobbish, indifferent, predator?

askin4it··on Timnit Gebru on her sacking by Google, AI’s dangers and big tech’s biases
Do you see the problem with your cartoon tutorial. Correct me if I'm wrong but your lesson is a good example of begging the question . I think of the two fallacies, the whipped white guys is not nearly as bad as yours. His is merely anecdotal. Yours rhetorically casts that sad sack as a predatory animal.

Please stop helping.

Why the need for all the qualifiers and pre-explanation?

It's a fair, and I think, accurate assessment of the ongoing smear campaign being waged by the legacy media against Musk and others.

The way you framed up the comment sounds almost like an attempt to avoid any kind of potential scrutiny of your remarks by whatever group you are obliquely referring to.

Aside from this contorted attempt to bend a comic book reference into Mein Kampf, is there is a shred of evidence that Elon Musk is a bigot in any way at all??

I would suggest the way the media is framing this up indicates an almost pathological obsession with conflict on their part. Why isn't that the story?

Sorry, dumb question.

askin4it··on Toronto restaurant caters to neurodivergent diners
Can someone explain why we need another new word? I understand that it's to keep me from being a reprehensible person because of some insensitive utterance that might escape my lips. Does anyone with autism honestly care?

Can someone please define neurodivergent for me so I understand why this term is necessary in journalism?

I know I can Google it, but the search results and info boxes from the pangoogleopticon, on a question like this, will make my skin crawl and will certainly check any and all boxes required to keep the crazies from attacking. I am genuinely curious what this term accomplishes...

(If anyone takes the time for a thoughtful answer, I'd like to say "thanks".)
