asimpleusecase··on Chinese state-linked accounts hyped DeepSeek AI launch ahead of US stock rout
It will be interesting to see if there was short selling of NVIDIA by the hedge fund behind deep seek. However in the coming months it will become clear how many of DeekSeeks claims prove to be true. In the short term testing out the promised improvements in efficiency by other frontier models will be something to watch for. The next test will be is there genuine advancement in the space in capability. Let’s see how frontier models respond over the coming months. Should make for some fast paced action in this space
asimpleusecase··on Emotional support across adulthood: A 60-year study of men’s social networks
I attend a church and it’s large enough that you would generally not get to know people very well. But they offer “small group” connection and about 3 years ago I connected with 3 other men. We meet every couple of weeks. We have different backgrounds but all of us have leadership responsibilities. We have step by step deepened the trust and confidence in each other. At some point over the past year each of us was in some type of ultra stressful situation - losing sleep -etc. But when we came to our group we could say as much or as little as we wished but the entire group was supportive. I could get into more detail but I know that many on HN don’t care for church. What I wanted to share is that we all have found this to be the highlight of our week - when we get together. Personally, it has been the most connected I have been with men in 20 years. So it’s not a law of nature that men won’t or can’t see their masculine support network grow. It takes time to build trust but it is worth the investment
asimpleusecase··on Mice given lethal dose of venom all survive 15 minutes later via AI protein
A mouse living an extra 15 minutes does not seem like an amazing result. However the problem space is relivant as there are estimates of 58,000 people dying from snake bit in India every year. If you bump that up to 100,000 to cover the rest of the world and that moves this research into something that could be really useful , IF it opened up new therapeutics that were easier to manufacture, transport and store.

asimpleusecase··on Lumen Orbit
I was listening to this interview https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/this-week-in-startups/... and the vision of basically free power to run a data center that could be dropped into orbit by space x - struck me as very transformative. Especially when thinking about speed of build once fully operational. What do others here think?
asimpleusecase··on Pluralsight unilaterally cancelling lifetime licenses
Well, they did not say whose lifetime.
asimpleusecase··on Ask HN: How do you prevent the impact of social media on your children?
We have limited access to devices for under ten. Even educational apps on tablets have strict time limits. Initially there is an emotional reaction to limits and we talk to them about who is in control. Them or the technology. We want them to have mastery over the tech so that they can put it down. Only when you can put it down and move on to a real world activity are you the one in control. Personal tech is a tool, a dangerous one. We would not hand car keys to a 5 year old and let them teach themselves how to drive. Recently my 13 year old asked for a blow torch to do some metal work. We explained the danger and over see the tool. He is totally absorbed in his craft, he has not asked for a phone. In a chat with a neighbour we mentioned the blow torch and said “ we find it to be less dangerous than social media on a smart phone. They stopped and said “yes, that is absolutely right.” We just got our 16 year old a smart phone but with limits. He needs the tool for work, orchestra communication and for maps of public transport. We are in a constant dialog about gaining personal freedom and responsibility. We have friends whose children are self harming due to bullying they have experienced on social media. It has been a deep discussion in their home. They are carefully walking their way forward but they regret not having more safety rails and discussion 2 years ago.

I’m of the opinion that we need to think of smart phones like power tools. And that there ought to be significant training and oversight and demonstrated understanding of risks and how to use the tool safely.

asimpleusecase··on After 2 years, Coca-Cola's promise to scale up reusable packaging is dead
Mandatory deposits on all packaging for drinks is an effective solution to pollution. No special technology needed. Does not matter if it is reusable or not - just make the required deposit high enough and people will collect the containers for the money.
asimpleusecase··on Tree of Life: Listen to foundational academic papers
Seems new. Less than 50 paper listed. Seems like a front end for an LLm driven “reader”

asimpleusecase··on Can LLMs accurately recall the Bible?
This is nice work. The safest approach is using the look up - which his data shows to be very good - and combine that with a database of verses. That way textual accuracy can be retained and very useful lookup be carried out by LLM. This same approach can be used for other texts where accurate rendering of the text is critical. For example say you built a tool to cite federal regulations in an app. The text is public domain and likely in the training data of large LLMs but in most use cases hallucinating the text of a fed regulation could expose the user to significant liability. Better to have that canonical text in a database to insure accuracy.
asimpleusecase··on Ten Thousand Years
We still have remote tribes who have very little interaction with nuclear technology. We could test some of these communication methods and see how they interpret them.

asimpleusecase··on Show HN: I built a tool to find valuable expired domains
So you must create an account - I logged in with Google account. Then you are “offered” $7.99 a month or $18.99 a month with a starter discount. They refer to hundreds of listings a month and say they will be “like” the ten on display. But you can’t see the samples until you pay. At this point I backed out and cleared my browser. I don’t see how this is really any better than GoDaddy.

Well, Steve [Jobs]… I think it's more like we both had this rich neighbour named Xerox and I broke into his house to steal the TV set and found out that you had already stolen it.

asimpleusecase··on Should we teach children to memorize the multiplication tables?
It’s not just higher reasoning. Just try to buy something with cash and try to give the cashier “extra” change so you get back a whole bill and see how the cashier handles it. Total $5.17 give the cashier $10.17 and look for a $5 bill back- I often see the cashier look quite flustered and grabbing their phone but not really sure what to do.
asimpleusecase··on Chemical 'waves' used to encode words as Morse code

asimpleusecase··on OpenAI tempers expectations with less bombastic, GPT-5-less DevDay this fall
I think they are working out how to make money. They need to keep doubling revenue to support the spending needed to build next generation models.

I have a different view from article on OpenAI paying for data access. That looks more like a moat to me than a flaw. AI agents will be near useless if they are all blocked in the web. If OpenAI builds exclusive or such expensive partnerships that others are squeezed out they could be building a very strategic advantage
