I've been implementing some peer-to-peer broadcast protocols here: https://github.com/ashwanirathee/distrifein. It started with implementing protocols taught in my distributed systems class namely: Best-Effort Broadcast, Reliable Broadcast, and Uniform Reliable Broadcast.
At first, I got text broadcasting working between two local processes (on the same computer). Then I extended it to support broadcasting images (currently only in .ppm format). With seemingly minor changes, I now have broadcasting (both text and images) working across different devices on my LAN!
It feels like I'm getting much closer to building a distributed file system, chat app, or even a database which is really exciting. I believe implementing shared memory, total order broadcast, and atomic commit will be essential for those.
