ashurov··on The ‘Indiana Jones’ Supernatural Horror Movie That Almost Was (2017)
perhaps 2017 should be added in the title?
ashurov··on DisplayLink: Display intermittently blanking, flickering or losing video signal
with the Displaylink KB entry: https://support.displaylink.com/knowledgebase/articles/73861...

"Surprisingly, we have also seen this issue connected to gas lift office chairs. When people stand or sit on gas lift chairs, they can generate an EMI spike which is picked up on the video cables, causing a loss of sync. If you have users complaining about displays randomly flickering it could actually be connected to people sitting on gas lift chairs. Again swapping video cables, especially for ones with magnetic ferrite ring on the cable, can eliminate this problem. There is even a white paper about this issue."

ashurov··on Old-employees complain about Booking.com: it’s one big mess (Dutch)
Having a hard time to copy/paste a Google translate with the English translation, but basically the article talks about the (too) fast grow of Booking.com and all the related stress and the very old tech they are using and not willing too upgrade (Perl is mentioned). So reconsider when getting an offer from Booking.com to work there.
ashurov··on Ask HN: What do you do with your Raspberry Pi?
Doing this as well as we speak! Also using a Pi as a RetroPi.
ashurov··on Ask HN: How close together are your bus stops?
I was involved in a project where we could identify Transit deserts (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transit_desert). Sadly the new administration cancelled this project. We were using GTFS data and US Census data to identify these. Quite interesting stuff. Perhaps the OP is interested in that as well.
ashurov··on The Origin of ‘Script Kiddie’
the article refers to "The origin of 0-day (zero-day) in hacking (etymology of zero-day)". Thus not the warez scene. It was taken from the warez scene by the hackers scene, but the interest is in when the first reference was used within the hackers scene for so-called exploits that haven't made the public yet or are so new that they are still referred to as 0-days.
ashurov··on The Origin of ‘Script Kiddie’
to lift along with this topic..

the origin of 0-day (zero-day): http://bjorn.kuiper.nu/2013/10/09/origin_of_zero_day/

curious to see if somebody knows (with proof) of an earlier reference..

ashurov··on The Morris Worm at 30
"There are documents from the US Airforce's computer security group in the mid 1970s talking about buffer overflows.": could you point me to this/provide more information?
ashurov··on I Nearly Lost All of My Data
Synology allows syncing of your NAS to a similar Synoogy NAS on another location (Cloud station server). That's what I am doing. This doesn't prevent issues with data corruption, but prevents these kind of issues where you 'complete' NAS fails due to a possible surge.

ashurov··on Twitter: A Clusterfuck of UI Mistakes
this seems to only work well through the (iphone) app. accessing the website through chrome (or similar) shows the behavior you mentioned.
ashurov··on Mark Zuckerberg accused of abusing power after row over 'napalm girl' photo
No, to use your terms, he addresses that the current terms of agreement are incorrect and don't fit the media role the medium (Facebook) has and should be addressed. Facebook is a huge news outlet, or at least used by many people in that way, and therefore should consider a more fitting approach to such (news) articles.
ashurov··on The OPM Data Breach [pdf]
as a foreign citizen, previously living and working for the DoT through a contractor, i was never notified as well. pretty sure my data got leaked as well.
ashurov··on Kim Dotcom permitted to livestream his appeal against extradition on Youtube
it is not really about the person in this case, but about the case (no pun intended). US gov overreached where normal due process should have taken its course.
ashurov··on Teletext in Europe
a great article from augustus 2015 (in Dutch) explaining how and why teletekst is probably still so popular in the Netherlands. this also includes following soccer standings on game day. http://www.nu.nl/weekend/4106506/digitale-revolutie-laat-raz...

while our southern neighbours (belgium) are shutting down teletext. (article also in Dutch)

ashurov··on Man arrested in VTech hack that exposed data for millions of kids
How would you inform the general public of the severity of the problem?! "Hey they have an SQLI vulnerability! I own them!" or "Hey I just downloaded millions of records including the photo's you took". See the difference? I agree with your point, but that approach doesn't translate the severity of the problem to the public. I don't have the solution to this problem, except perhaps educating the general public?!
