ashraymalhotra··on India’s Central Bank Bans Regulated Entities From Dealing In Virtual Currencies
Could you please explain why will the advance economies never fully outlaw it? As far as I can understand, till bitcoin is a niche miniscule part of the economy, they might not care. But if it starts to become mainstream, I don't see how being developed or undeveloped would make a difference? All governments want to have control over the currency...
ashraymalhotra··on Understanding Deep Learning Through Neuron Deletion
This paper basically proves that neurons which people understand better are not any more "important" to the network than the ones we do not understand as well. It is absolutely true that a generalised network will have much lesser drop off in accuracy as compared to a network which basically just stored the input data.
ashraymalhotra··on Ask HN: GSoC experience?
Would love to share my experience since it was pretty different from most of my peers. I contributed to VTK, building tools to magnify invisible motion, based on a CSAIL paper [1].

Unlike most people, I hardly had extensive programming background. In fact my core competency was in the image processing (I come from an electrical engineering background). I never considered my programming skills good enough to participate in GSoC. In fact, one of my friends told me about this project a week before the deadline. I was already implementing this algorithm for a course project of mine, though it was in Python. Hence I spent most of my time learning professional programming and ended up successfully completing the project. In the spirit of open source, I have shared my entire GSoC application publicly [2], I hope you find it helpful!

ashraymalhotra··on Apple Music on Track to Overtake Spotify in U.S. Subscribers
This. This is the only reason I continue to tolerate Apple Music. My job requires me to travel extensively across countries. With Apple Music, I can be assured that music in my playlists works across countries.

When am in the US, I honestly find YouTube Music to be the best (probably since it has a lot of my listening data already hence gets the prediction accurate). But Apple Music still remains the only music subscription I pay for.

ashraymalhotra··on What I Look for In Tech Startups
Interested to read more on the YC experiment where they gave money to just good teams and how was it a failure? Any references, please?
ashraymalhotra··on Google’s Pixel Buds won’t change the world
Yup, same with Snapchat spectacles! Although Spectacles did try to play with the coolness factor at least.
ashraymalhotra··on Google’s Pixel Buds won’t change the world
This is a really good observation. I ponder a lot on UX of new products and have to accept I didn’t think of this before. But I do expect Google to have realised this problem in their user testing (if it involved non techies at all). Pixel buds feels like a product rushed to market (because they had to remove the headphone jack?) and not well thought out/implemented.
