the simplest (unmentioned) solution that works in all browsers is to use flash with a crossdomain.xml as the bridge

sorry not the same.

when I type an email I have an expectation that only I and the recipient will see the email.

similarly, a vast majority of these people are not intending to broadcast these updates into the public space (non-anonymously with a photo of their face attached next to the update)

I personally don't have any moral outrage over this, but that is the issue. You've built up an expectation of privacy with people and then took it away without enough user messaging. One dialog if I remember correctly, saying something along the lines of "Share your updates with everyone." (what does "everyone" even mean?)

tldr: you switched the defaults on people and they haven't realized it.

ashot··on Dear Mr. Jobs, I have some ideas about how to improve your phone
close, but no cigar.

It should be a unified, filterable timeline of calls, voicemails, and txts (look ma, a newsfeed!)

I communicate with people (often the same people) through multiple mediums throughout the day. The most important information to me is what occured in the last 10 minutes, hour, day. why should I have to manually switch between types?

Open up one screen, flip through unread messages, voicemails, and calls.

ashot··on Microsoft Silverlight vs Google Wave: Why Karma Matters
I'm surprised you didn't make the larger point: this is true for every product Microsoft has ever made. Copy, improve, persist. Basic, DOS, Windows, Office, IE, etc.

They are not a creative company (or as Jobs would have it they have no taste - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=upzKj-1HaKw ).

Their business does not revolve around creating new things but about copying and improving things that already exist in the market. And to be fair, this strategy has worked out quite well for them so far, so why would they change course?

ashot··on Stephen Wolfram’s Introduction to Wolfram Alpha (screencast)
There's a Q&A with press and someone asks this questions and Wolfram essentially says that yes they very much want third party participation, the only caveat being that there would be some manual review process of the data for accuracy.

So ultimately I think thats what this is like a Google Base + computation where they have added (hopefully) enough of the core to push it over the hill.

A place to put structured data where it can be fully leveraged minimal effort from the data provider.

ashot··on Twitter’s Response to #fixreplies: We Can’t
I think what you will not see is your friend's tweet @stranger in your timeline, which you didn't by default anyway. All is still visible on the profile page, hence stranger's tweets are not affected.

This is a meta-comment, and I'm meta-sorry for that, but I wanted to say that HN has got to be the only social news site that has articles sit at the top for some time before anyone comments on them. Is it that people are actually reading and digest the content first?

so adobe wrote an officially sanctioned as3 wrapper on the facebook api and published a press release? any half-decent developer can just work with the api directly - this is complete fluff
ashot··on Processing + Javascript = Flash Killer
Flash has the same problem as IE -- nobody upgrades it

I know someone else replied to this, but just had to add my 2 cents here. This is in fact flash's biggest advantage: how quickly they are able to push new versions out to 98% install penetration. The only cross-platform development environment in the world which has the luxury to consistently push out new features on a yearly basis. As long as there are new features to be pushed flash will have a space. Though that is a question, what is left? They are running out. Perhaps hardware accelerated 3d.

ashot··on After Being Upstaged By Google, Wolfram Alpha Fires Back With A Leaked Screenshot
ha, well op said build a "search index".. its not much of a search index if you can't search it :)
ashot··on After Being Upstaged By Google, Wolfram Alpha Fires Back With A Leaked Screenshot
I'm think you are oversimplifying the problem. Web search is about the long tail you need breadth in your index. It will cost quite a bit more than a couple of bucks to do (storage is not that cheap, nor is cpu), and you'd have to do it repeatedly (and quickly as I mentioned above). And then of course you'll need enough computing power to perform the actual searches and run hadoop on your web index. There are only a handful of serious players in this space (check your site logs) for a reason
ashot··on After Being Upstaged By Google, Wolfram Alpha Fires Back With A Leaked Screenshot
its not a technical challenge to build an index of the entire web?

certainly not easy, and not any easier than it was before as the web is much larger

there is also freshness/timeliness which is the most difficult aspect and is becoming more and more important as more data is added to the web faster (one area where googlebot kills yahoo/msn)

ashot··on "I never said she stole my money" has 7 different meanings depending on the stressed word
thanks!
ashot··on "I never said she stole my money" has 7 different meanings depending on the stressed word
when doing nlp is there a standardized system or practice for encoding this data (which word(s) where emphasized)?

what is the logical framework for this? at first I thought you could only have one emphasized word per statement, but though its a bit more nuanced but you can also have two at a time (ie "my" and "money")
