ashish01··on Micro Python – a lean and efficient implementation of Python 3
Is there a way to try it on windows ?
ashish01··on Open letter to Sal Khan
I agree with the sentiment of the letter but why does Sal have to provide the optimal video lecture (code) for every topic (module) for his project (Khan Academy).

As a single person, even with a team of advisers, he will not be able to do this for every topic he covers.

One solution can be that he provides a clear interface to each of his modules and sub modules e.g. this module should cover changing base of logarithms and the student should be able to pass these questions (units tests) in the end.

In this model people can contribute in two ways - either make unit test more comprehensive or make the teaching material (code) better.

ashish01··on Abusing hash kernels for wildly unprincipled machine learning
Anyone interested in the article should give VW a try. You can get good baseline performance in a fraction of time compared to other traditional approaches like liblinear et. al.

If you haven't seen this just take time to watch the first 15 minutes. Really worth it.

ashish01··on Can Microsoft Salvage Windows Phone?
Same here. After using android (CM6 and 7) for a year and a half I changed to windows phone mainly because of it was cheap and seemed more fluid. But after using it for a few months now I do feel its better than Android in most respects.

One thing which I like the most is that the OS itself in invisible most of the time. In Android I had a constant feeling of managing the OS e.g. installing advanced task manager to control processes running in back ground, rooting it to CM6-7 because HTC upgrade to 2.2 made it near useless.

[I work for Microsoft, not on WP7 though]

ashish01··on Nginx established as a company
Could the work being done for porting nodejs to windows[1] be used for a nginx's windows port in any way ?

Also take a look at Knockout.js (http://knockoutjs.com/)

Its a lightweight MVVC framework which brings WPF like data binding to HTML.

See some live examples at : http://knockoutjs.com/examples/

and I ported backbone.js todo example to knockout over here : https://github.com/ashish01/knockoutjs-todos

ashish01··on Bullet-proof Node.js coding
Coz you mentioned elegant sync programming. I think the async CTP for C# solves this problem of nested callbacks.

Take a look here

ashish01··on RAPT: A physics-intensive HTML5 Platformer
Feel of the game is very similar to this Ninja game (http://games1.org/flash-games/NGame) done in flash. Its amazing how much can now be done in HTML itself.

ashish01··on Evernote Drops .NET for Native C++
Does anyone know what UI lib they used for replacing WPF ? Qt ?
ashish01··on Mozilla delays Firefox 4 release until 2011
Is it just me or is Firefox's quality actually degrading ? I have been using Firefox since 1.0 and it was a really welcome change compared to IE. But now compared to Chrome

* Its load times are ridiculously high compared to Chrome

* Sometimes when my netflix window freezes up, it takes down the whole browser with it (though I know its running in a separate process)

* Opening downthemall's manager window makes for whole browser unresponsive for a few seconds

* Detaching a tab reloads it (unlike chrome or ie9)

The only reason I still use firefox is because of firebug and downthemall.

ashish01··on London Stock Exchange smashes world record trade speed with Linux
This makes me wonder how, in mission critical and real time systems like LSE, they maintain a balance between being ACID and fast. Does any of these transactions ever touch the disk ? If not, how do they handle machine failures ?
ashish01··on Linux Kernel Tuning for C500k
This is interesting stuff. I jumped into node.js programming a while ago and will like to run similar tests on node.js. Can anyone tell me how client side load of 500K long lived connections achieved ? Is there a standard set of programs to achieve this or some custom scripts.
ashish01··on Installing Node.js On Ubuntu Screencast Tutorial
I totally agree. npm will keep screaming if you run it as root and for a good reason. Don't run third party modules as root. This article describes the process in more detail

ashish01··on An update on Heroku Node.js support
I did the same thing this weekend. Setting up node on ec2-micro with a ubuntu 10.04 image. The process was mostly straight forward but I had a issue with in correct entry in fstab resulting in not being able to ssh in after a reboot. The fix was simple but I did waste an hour on it.

Here is a list of steps I did http://pastebin.com/gz01XZnU

Main thing is to fix the fstab as soon as you login the first time.

ashish01··on Ask HN: whither Billmonk?
I am in the same boat. Though the site has been unstable for a while it totally died today. @goberoi please convince them to let users export all the transactions. Thanks

ashish01··on Automatically followed by abusive ex-husband (and his friends) on Google Buzz
I was also quite upset over a similar situation but now google seems to have made it easier to "block" people who follow you. As mentioned in this article

http://lifehacker.com/5470104/google-updates-explains-buzz-p...

Now there is a block link again anyone following you (once you unfollow them).

ashish01··on Ask HN : Google buzz, your views ?
Well you can only block someone if they have a public profile. My x is in my "followers" list and does not have a public profile :-( . Why cant they have a facebook like option on whom to allow or not, why link something like this to a public profile.
ashish01··on OpenBTS: Cheap, open source cellular network
I have been interested in software radio for some time now but lack the technical knowledge to understand it fully. Can someone point me to links that can help me understand this ? I am sure it will be helpful to many people.

From what I have read one needs a Universal Software Radio Peripheral (USRP) for sending and receiving radio signals but searching for this leads to things like daughter boards etc. which I did not understand.

Can someone explain it here ?

Thanks

ashish01··on HN Help: I'm lost
My advice is why don't you start with some simple things first like making small positive changes in your routine. Getting up early, eating healthy, exercising, meditating for 10 min a day. In my experience these small changes infuse me with energy to deal with problems in my life. Once you feel more hopeful and confident about yourself you can decide what is best for you. Weather getting a new job near your place, going free lancing or something else.

All of us at one point or another feel lost and connecting with your friends and family helps a lot but its most important to connect back to yourself.

Best of luck.
