ashildr··on Things unexpectedly named after people (2020)
X-Strahlen (X-Rays) is the name Röntgen invented for his discovery :)
ashildr··on Five tube stations now have new circular tube maps
About as useful as the special “features” of a Samsung phone.
ashildr··on The European regulators listened to the Open Source communities
GDPR is easy as a small organization IF you are not greedy for other people‘s data. Keep your hands clean. I own (part of) a small company that makes software for a small market and we had absolutely no problems with GDPR because we try to not collect any data we don‘t absolutely need. It‘s not very complicated if you just invest some thought into your processes and don’t spy on your customers. Most of the time you don‘t need the data but someone wants to sell you a product to gather it.
ashildr··on Apple Vision Pro review
We still had this (--NSDisplay ?) in the first Developer Previews of MacOSX.
ashildr··on Why focus on AI meeting transcripts if the real problem is bad meeting prep?
I‘m sorry but if you are the owner of these meetings I consider it your responsibility to (have someone) properly moderate them.
ashildr··on English Wikipedia drove out fringe editors over two decades
> we know for a fact, thanks to many leaks, that scientists believed lableak was possible and even likely, that they were pressured from "on high" to say otherwise

Do we know that for a fact?

ashildr··on Apple Watch violates patents held by Orange Co. tech company, ITC finds
So do it with Laser diodes.
ashildr··on iCloud Drive silently deletes your content
IIRC turning off sync asks you this question: “Are you sure you want to continue? All iCloud notes will be removed from your iPhone.”

I feel as if your wife’s Problem was not Apple but the person administering her iOS devices.

ashildr··on Project Gutenberg has implemented one of the worst AI fears of striking actors
Blech. The TTS in my iOS devices gets better every generation, and it can read text from project Gutenberg pretty well. This is the same “problem”.
ashildr··on Do not put plastic in the microwave
I quit smoking about 20 years ago though I’m living in the city next to a major road. I don’t see your point.

I cook at least 50% of my warm meals myself and I learned to prepare meals in advance and to freeze or sterilize them. Not so much to save money but because I prefer good food with known ingredients. I don’t see why I shouldn’t be able to reduce my intake of microplastics by further phasing out the plastic containers I usually use and use relatively cheap glass containers.

ashildr··on iOS 17 Is a Prude
I’ve been to more sex parties than I can count and there’s definitely a significant amount of porn on my iOS devices, so I’d not consider myself prude. Still I think that giving people the option to hide unsolicited dick picks on their devices is a good idea and not prude. I think the same about an option hiding pictures of spiders.

Extrapolating from that we may touch hiding queer or black people, or mixed couples one day, which will be an interesting situation.

ashildr··on iOS 17 Is a Prude
But photos.app scanning for kittens on device is not creepy somehow? Interesting.
ashildr··on Japanese police make first YouTuber arrest for uploading video game gameplay
> This is what you get when you lose world war (Coughs in German) No.
ashildr··on Qubits 30 meters apart used to confirm Einstein was wrong about quantum
„…wrong about quantum“?

What a stupid headline.

ashildr··on An Appeal to AI Superintelligence: Reasons to Preserve Humanity
But can a omnipotent god create a stone so heavy they can‘t lift?
ashildr··on Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought
Dunning and Kruger agree.
ashildr··on An Appeal to AI Superintelligence: Reasons to Preserve Humanity
Show me an AI Superintelligence that is convinced by some points the rocket brains on lesswrong make and I show you a pathetic Superintelligence.
ashildr··on Photoprism – open-source Google Photos Alternative
Syncthing has been ported to iOS as Möbius Sync. https://www.mobiussync.com/ I used it for a while and it worked.
ashildr··on How my brother's iCloud account was stolen
IIRC changing the phone number associated to an AppleID involves knowing the device code, the AppleID passcode or having access to another device with 2FA.

I may be wrong and I have multiple devices with 2FA activated, so my mileage may vary because of this. I’d always expect 2 factors to be necessary to make changes to my account. If changing the phone number with activated 2FA is possible without one of these elements present I’d consider it an oversight. I consider the SMS mostly a tool to make sure the user has access to the new phone number while setting it up and does not misstype.

Since OP mentions a 4-digit smear code I am not convinced that Apples security is the weakest link.

ashildr··on How my brother's iCloud account was stolen
I emphasize with you but I am not sure if Apple even should be able to help you in the ways you imagine.
ashildr··on How my brother's iCloud account was stolen
Can you elaborate on how the phone-based recovery mechanism is grossly insecure - I am genuinely curious…
ashildr··on Should I step down as head of Twitter? I will abide by the results of this poll
I voted “no”. What’s left of the bird needs to crash and burn quickly so we can get over it and build something better.
ashildr··on The Fediverse is inefficient but that's a good trade-off
On the contrary I found it quite easy to set up a dockerized Mastodon system using prebuilt containers. It took me half a day of tinkering from not knowing anything about it to compose a system that was integrated into the rest of my infra that I was comfortable to invite my friends to.

What I am now completely oblivious to is KPIs to judge the health of the components.

ashildr··on I Got Banned for Life from Airbnb (2018)
While I was considering to book a large airbnb for me and my team for a conference later this year this article makes it less likely that we‘ll take the risk of not staying in a hotel.
ashildr··on For 110 years, climate change has been in the news
> Why do you think that embracing it is not possible?

We need to learn to stop worrying and to love climate change?

Because it will destruct significant portions of inhabited land? Because we now can have a marina where once were densely inhabited cities? Because those surviving the famines and wars will have a low BMI?

Your comment is the most stupid shilling I read in a while. How about embracing a truck on the highway?

ashildr··on A little exercise each day improves muscles more than one big weekly workout
I REALLY like the name, sounds like fun!
ashildr··on One dead and nine wounded after accident with self-driving car
> Anmerkung der Redaktion: In einer früheren Version dieses Artikels hieß es, an dem Unfall sei ein autonomes Fahrzeug beteiligt gewesen.

No, the article has been corrected, it wasn’t a test vehicle and (irrelevant, but still wrong) the driver was male.

ashildr··on MacBook Air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason
Saying you are about 50 years old without saying you are about 50 years old :-)
ashildr··on Two containers with same number detected in Chittagong port
Thank you for mentioning this book!
ashildr··on How destructive are nuclear weapons really?
> I think humans would probably be able to build back pretty quickly given the tech and manufacturing capability we have today.

I’m not trying to be rude, but I don’t think that you have any knowlegde of the logistics and the advanced electronics, biology, chemistry and processes that is necessary for the current manufacturing we have to work. If you look into this and learn how complex even the production of the most simple objects and devices is, you may lose some sleep. And this is only about infrastructure - not engineers/specialists who know how to build and operate it. On top there are no easily available hydrocarbons left to bootstrap an industrial civilization a second time.

If we fuck up this time, or are fucked up by a major extinction event, we’ll be stuck in early middle ages until we die out.
