asdgioanionio··on GPU-Accelerated LLM on an Orange Pi
Depending on an LLM for survival is a good way to end up dead.

English Wikipedia will fit on an SD card. It's more valuable and more practical.

You can't judge from Bacardi. It's bottom-shelf, young, and pretty rough. I find it unpleasant to drink neat even at 80 proof. A high-quality, aged rum at 130 proof will be plenty fiery, but not as bad as Bacardi 151 diluted to 130 proof.

Of course, the sailors probably didn't drink anything terribly high-end.

The loudness information is derived from the file in the first place, so a smart enough player can re-derive it and normalize audio on the fly. My player (mpv) does this by calling out to libav. It can handle both live audio and prerecorded audio, using different algorithms for each case. This functionality can be enabled with config flag `af="acompressor=ratio=4,loudnorm"`. I will admit that I copied these options from examples without really knowing what they do or how they do it, but they make things much more pleasant.

It's disgraceful that even major movie studios often do such a bad job with audio mixing that I indiscriminately run everything through a filter. This is not a problem with the files I'm using; I find the same thing in the theater. C'est la vie.

asdgioanionio··on US inflation means families are spending $709 more per month than two years ago
Because their pay also increased. People can generally afford higher prices. Real wages have remained remarkably stable in the last few years.

The article itself says this. Somehow, it manages to spin it into bad news.

>Even though prices have soared, real earnings, which adjust for inflation, are stuck at late 2019 levels.

People can afford the same lifestyles they could a few years ago. The US weathered the outbreak of war in Europe and the worst pandemic in generations without serious economic hardship. Somehow, in CNN's view, this is a problem. Real wages haven't been stable. They haven't been resilient. No, they've been "stuck".

A machine that is 99% idle isn't running at 1% utilization all the time. It's idling 99% of the time and running flat out 1% of the time. The user pushes at least one core to the limit with every action they take, even if only for microseconds.

This is why performance matters even with a machine that is mostly idle. A faster system will respond faster to events. It will have lower latency when communicating over a network. It will handle user inputs faster. Users will complain that a program takes a second to respond even if the load average is 0.01.

(I know CPUs enter lower-performance states when lightly loaded. They can go from idle to their highest performance state in much less time than it takes for the user to notice latency.)
