asdfs··on Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer to retire within 12 months
Elaborate? I don't understand what you're suggesting.
asdfs··on Tesla Gets Carried Away Hyping Crash Test Results, Has Hand Slapped By Feds
He drove around a parking lot once, searching for the charging station.
asdfs··on Ubuntu Edge
>but also to bring forward a set of hardware technologies that won't be in the mainstream for a while.

Can you elaborate on this? I'm not seeing anything on the Indiegogo page that isn't more or less on track to be available in phones next year, except for perhaps the sapphire.

asdfs··on History of Emacs & vi Keys (Keyboard Influence on Keybinding Design) (2010)
I do wish that it had been 'JKL;' instead of 'HJKL'. Pulling my fingers from their resting position has always bothered me.
asdfs··on Linux 3.11 Officially Named "Linux For Workgroups"
I believe that 3.0 actually coincided with some Linux-related anniversary.
asdfs··on Sustaining git-annex development
Can you use Time Machine to shuttle data via a USB stick? How well does it work when you have more than two drives that you want to keep mostly synchronized?
asdfs··on Apple Updates The Mac Pro
Wouldn't you suffer from lower bandwidth than over PCIe, though?
asdfs··on Facts about Wayland vs X
Can't one produce effectively the same setup as X11 with a compositor that has a plugin system dedicated to surface positioning?
asdfs··on Global warming caused by chlorofluorocarbons, not carbon dioxide, new study says
Interestingly, methane from livestock is a large factor.

>According to a new report published by the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, the livestock sector generates more greenhouse gas emissions as measured in CO2 equivalent – 18 percent – than transport.

http://www.fao.org/newsroom/en/news/2006/1000448/index.html

(Though it's worth noting that that report is a few years old at this point.)

asdfs··on Secure Boot isn't the only problem facing Linux on Windows 8 hardware
Not if the default is to boot from an SSD soldered onto the mainboard, or tucked away in a device that is not designed to be opened.
asdfs··on Xorg-free Wayland Live CD that starts directly to Wayland
Modern X applications mostly shuffle around pixmaps anyway. X11 drawing primitives are not used very often at all.
asdfs··on Are video codecs written in JavaScript really the future?
Flash video typically uses hardware decoding.
asdfs··on Today I saw the future
I believe OnLive uses Flash or some other plugin to stream content.

As far as I can tell, the breakthrough that OTOY is claiming is this:

- They've developed a new video compression format and implementation that provides better compression ratios than h.264 [which implementation?].

- Their new format can be encoded very efficiently using a GPU-based encoder.

- Their encoder is very low-latency.

- They have a decoder written in JavaScript that can run in the browser.

- Their decoder is very low-latency.

All the cloud/streaming/remote desktop stuff is somewhat ancillary to this.

asdfs··on Version 1.8 of GNU ed released
I found this blog post to be an excellent ingroduction to ed, for the uninitiated: http://blog.sanctum.geek.nz/actually-using-ed/

And of course there's the obligatory: http://www.gnu.org/fun/jokes/ed-msg.txt

asdfs··on An Analysis of Linux Scalability to Many Cores (2010) [pdf]
Any references?
asdfs··on Microsoft Excel: Revolutionary 3D Game Engine?
This is relevant: http://www.digitallydownloaded.net/2013/04/interview-cary-wa...

It's a turn-based RPG in Excel.

asdfs··on Intel announces next-gen Thunderbolt with 20 Gbps throughput, 4K support
Does anyone know how OCuLink (similar to Thunderbolt, but by the PCI SIG) is coming along? There doesn't seem to be much public information.
asdfs··on Ask HN: What's the best technical talk you've heard?
"Inseperable from Magic: The Manufacture of Modern Semiconductors" — an overview of semiconductor fabrication (and its current challenges) by a former Intel engineer. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NGFhc8R_uO4

"The Atomic Level of Porn", by Jason Scott — a history of low-bandwidth pornography, from ham radio to telegraphs to BBSes. http://vimeo.com/7088524

How to build your own X-ray backscatter imager (aka "airport body scanner") by Ben Krasnow http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vUf75_MlOnw

"The Secret History of Silicon Valley" by Steve Blank. Other, more recent versions of this talk exist, but the audio quality is poor in them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTC_RxWN_xo#t=1m42s

asdfs··on Facebook Home
That seems like a somewhat poor example. When people first saw the iPad, it was quite rightly explained as "basically a big iPhone", which was completely sufficient to get an idea of the product.
asdfs··on Facebook Home
It's basically a Facebook branded home screen. Instead of the regular home screen with a bunch of icons to launch different applications, the home screen is now essentially a Facebook application. There's also some stuff to access Facebook functionality (chat, etc.) while using other applications.
asdfs··on Kerbal Space Program - space flight simulator game
The eventual goal is to have a "career mode" (there are currently stub menu entries in the UI), which will likely be similar to what you're envisioning.
asdfs··on Inappropriate comments at pycon 2013 called out
I'm not sure that those jokes are comparable. There's no negative stereotype in a penis size joke.
asdfs··on Checkboxes that kill your product
Ironically, it's the lack of options that keep me from using Mozilla's other product, Firefox for android. Things like not being able to set a home page, not being able to choose between thumbnail dropdown tabs and regular, always-visible tabs, and most notably not being able to turn off history have resulted in me using different browsers on Android. It's very frustrating.
asdfs··on "Invisible Electrostatic Wall" at 3M adhesive tape plant (1996)
X-rays are only produced by the unrolling of tape in a vacuum. So presumably no risk here.
asdfs··on Linux Foundation Secure Boot System Released
Ah, I see. Thanks for the explanation.
asdfs··on Linux Foundation Secure Boot System Released
Can you elaborate on "pipe injection"? I can't find references to the term after brief searching, and I'm curious.
asdfs··on Google’s Supposed Chromebook Pixel (And Its Touch Display) Stars In Leaked Video
Hopefully it'll be like the other Google-branded devices, and it'll allow you to install what you want on it easily.
asdfs··on Civilized Discourse Construction Kit
Was 4chan an inspiration for this? It seems much like a mix between 4chan and a more typical phpBB-style forum.

It's quite similar to what 4chan would be if threads were archived forever (which is actually the case for some boards), if 4chan had user-based moderation, and if anonymity was removed.

asdfs··on John Carmack's Comment on Hardware Ray Tracing
Check out his QuakeCon keynote. It's basically him talking for an hour about technical things that interest him.
asdfs··on US DoD signs $617 million Windows 8 licensing deal
Was the DoD primarily using Windows XP up to this point? It would make sense for them to move to 8 if that was the case, given the longer support lifetime.
