asdffdasasdf··on MongoDB CEO resigns to join Meta
working class people here thinking c level positions are billionaire corporations follow the same rules at small business (which startups are even lower)

exec on corporations is more about trust, family, and connections than anything else. previous work is mostly irrelevant.

asdffdasasdf··on China Discusses Sale of TikTok US to Musk as One Possible Option
they are mostly underlining the fact that the whole situation is about corruption and that it would easily please the corrupt if they benefited financially. and they ate the bait.
asdffdasasdf··on I quit my job to launch a WhatsApp calendar assistant
nice. this, unfortunately, is the future.

1) protecting in any way against meta doing an appl and bundling this feature on WhatsApp?

2) which api are you using? paying by message? paying meta compute? or hacking with a business account?

asdffdasasdf··on How The Pentagon learned to use targeted ads to find its targets
"learn a dozen technologies to the point of being an expert on all fields and then waste 2 months of work on each app, which will update every three days"

you're not wrong, but not going anywhere either.

asdffdasasdf··on How The Pentagon learned to use targeted ads to find its targets
every ad network does this. right before the pandemic the new feature released on all big five was digital-out-of-home, which is the literal plot of dystopian movies... outdoors targeted to people passing by.

after that they all added targeting by weather (latest fine grained targeting under gdpr) and BT beacon tracking.

fun fact, google uses BT on your phone to mark of you entered a store after seeing an ad for it to get paid for the "conversion".

asdffdasasdf··on How The Pentagon learned to use targeted ads to find its targets
heh. this reminds me that google just last week updated all their system apps (maps, calendar, clock) to include mandatory, no way to disable, weather. now they can phone home every time you look at the time or set up an alarm even under GDPR.
asdffdasasdf··on Command-line Tools can be 235x Faster than your Hadoop Cluster (2014)
maybe we should all start to add "evaluated a hadoop cluster for X applications and saved the company 1mi (in time, headcount, and uptime) a year going with a 40line perl script"
asdffdasasdf··on Tell HN: Russia has started blocking OpenVPN/WireGuard connections
of course it's possible. any country can do this. all trunk connecting are owned by the government telecom branch on 99pct of the world.

but then Russia would have a hard time making their hacking. lol.

asdffdasasdf··on Tell HN: Russia has started blocking OpenVPN/WireGuard connections
their heuristics is probably looking for long time connections.. you're scaping by moving the client around
asdffdasasdf··on Tell HN: Russia has started blocking OpenVPN/WireGuard connections
you're probably getting spoted by using a single server every time. protocol doesn't matter
asdffdasasdf··on Tell HN: Russia has started blocking OpenVPN/WireGuard connections
you were also a privilege person in the West and oblivious to poorer people outside of larger cities as the people you saw in China being oblivious to poorer people living outside of larger cities. foreigners, no matter how privileged, hardly can live inside the safety bubbles you yourself lived in the west.
asdffdasasdf··on Tell HN: Russia has started blocking OpenVPN/WireGuard connections
all those things are useless.

if you have contact out of the country you're already part of a very small elite. if not, you cannot use this. they are so oblivious to the demography they claim to help that the site requires js, a big no if you want to be seen by really f** people having to use tor browser.

all this does is placate some small elite. it helps china/Russia more than anything else.

asdffdasasdf··on Grimoire: Open-Source bookmark manager with extra features
(for now?) it's just a sample webapp. Like those TO-DO lists exercises. It have a dozen random metrics dashboards about how many bookmarks you add per day etc but not a single use case is done yet.
asdffdasasdf··on Grimoire: Open-Source bookmark manager with extra features
With a s* for brains search.

It fails to search anything, even it's own folders! or parts of the url. or the tags that gets added and removed from the UI every now and then and are ignored in search.

heck there's a 18yr old bug about performance being so bad in this search that if you have over 1k bookmarks it will just hang for several seconds.

edit: that said, i also use firefox bookmarks exclusively, but just for the (only one true in the entire industry) e2e server backups. Then i just manually export them and search outside of firefox, which sucks.

asdffdasasdf··on Some observations on the final text of the European Digital Identity framework
yeah, the tax preparation website and others.
asdffdasasdf··on Some observations on the final text of the European Digital Identity framework
i'm mobile. probably got the wrong url. only have bookmarks for the ca certs https://www.gov.br/iti/pt-br/assuntos/repositorio/repositori...
asdffdasasdf··on Cicero: The first AI to play at a human level in Diplomacy (2022)
manipulating trust in elections is pretty much MetaBook's business model at this point.

Btw, how does Cicero react/uses to the most common Diplomacy game strategy: going out for a smoke and bribing someone to gang up on on another player? "hey Cicero, i have some GPUs to spare and was thinking..."

asdffdasasdf··on Some observations on the final text of the European Digital Identity framework
here's one example, the brazil irs https://www.receita.gov.br/

good lucky finding the cert if you didn't download your firefox in brazilian portuguese or didn't register you apple device in brazil. I mean, it is not difficult to find the cert, but it is a pain for travelers.

asdffdasasdf··on Some observations on the final text of the European Digital Identity framework
> We were concerned about the phrasing of Article 45, that lays down a requirement for browsers to recognize any certificate ...

So same as today but with less steps?

Most govs are already in you browser/OS CA list. And every single government force you to download their own cert and add to your browser at some point. There's no way to add that cert and say "limit this to gov.in only"! after you added that cert it is game over.

e.g. https://pki.treas.gov/crl_certs.htm https://www.bit.admin.ch/bit/en/home/themes/swiss-government... plus all the gov CAs already in your browser (looking at firefox source they include, guangdong, taiwan, honkkong, netherlands and Greece. IOS 16 contains spain, belgium, something called "Government Root Certification Authority 00 B6 4B 88 07 E2 23 EE C8 5C 12 AD A6 0E 06 A1 F2" :shrug, greece, hk, Netherlands, Switzerland.
