asdf6969··on Layoffs Don't Work
Anyone who would rather not be alive is free to make that decision. Why are you still alive if you really believe this?
asdf6969··on How much are LLMs boosting real-world programmer productivity?
I use it almost daily for asking questions. It’s 100x faster at reading documentation than I am but it’s still pretty bad at actually writing code.
asdf6969··on AI tools are spotting errors in research papers
There’s no such thing as an obvious error in most fields. What would the AI say to someone who claimed the earth orbited the sun 1000 years ago? I don’t know how it could ever know the truth unless it starts collecting its own information. It could be useful for a field that operates from first principles like math but more likely is that it just blocks everyone from publishing things that go against the orthodoxy.
asdf6969··on The Dead Planet Theory
The advice in the article is great for things that don't really matter. Fill in your knowledge gaps about the world or learn some random new skills. For things that actually matter, I agree.

> What are some things with easy entry-level learning curves?

Last year I realized I could memorize every country on a world map and it would only take a few hours over the weekend. Connected it with some wikipedia searches about countries I don't really know over the next few weeks and suddenly I feel so much more knowledgeable about the world and have a new hobby. There's a lot of stuff that everyone has heard of but doesn't know anything about and it doesn't take much time to fix that.

asdf6969··on Should managers still code?
Do you read books about management in your evenings?
asdf6969··on Should managers still code?
> you already do

Most of us rarely interact with these people so it doesn't matter. They're just the newest placeholder name in the emails I get every few months as they're shuffled around.

asdf6969··on Should managers still code?
No thank you. All of the worst managers I've worked with know just enough to offer annoying suggestions but not enough to understand why it doesn't work (usually workplace politics). Sometimes I can't "just" do anything. The best ones I've worked with used to code 5+ years ago.

I don't want to spend my time managing my manager. He thinks I'm an idiot because I can't follow his simple instructions and I think he's naive and ready to fire me. Bad for all of us!

asdf6969··on How the U.K. broke its own economy
Taxes are a lot higher because the higher brackets kick in at a much lower income while cost of living is similar. A top 5% income is not enough to live a dignified in London where most of those jobs are but it’s high enough that the government won’t let you make more. Very sad situation. Top 5% income in the UK is probably more like top 20% in the USA
asdf6969··on Executive wealth as a factor in return-to-office
taking the kids home takes at least as much time as commuting to home and back

“Just live closer” thanks I’ll just ask to double my income

asdf6969··on Executive wealth as a factor in return-to-office
Who gets to choose their own hours? This would get most people fired. You can’t just leave in the middle of the afternoon to spend an hour+ driving your kids around
asdf6969··on Executive wealth as a factor in return-to-office
Why do you care if people slack off? That’s the company’s problem

Hell yea brother. Blood and soil. Georgia is for the Georgians and nobody else should be allowed to settle there

You’re right, I mistook the Canadian numbers for all of North America. I know south and Central America had a much higher population but that’s not what this thread is about. It looks like a more accurate number is in the low millions so my point still stands.
asdf6969··on Inheriting is becoming nearly as important as working
working on it :)

I like it here but I have no future and it’s seriously impacting my mental health

You’re just not living in a HCOL area yet. Eventually we all will. After that it will make sense
asdf6969··on Inheriting is becoming nearly as important as working
Because you own land. It will make more money than most people make through employment. This is true in many parts of Canada over the last decade and the trend will probably spread

In the sense that there’s a growing class of landed gentry and nobody else can buy anything. People with houses today will be the aristocracy in a few decades

That’s better than a system where future janitors are still expected to grind math problems instead of having a childhood

There were a few hundred thousand of them across the entire continent. In the best case scenario, most of them still would have died to disease. Unless you believe a few hundred thousand people own should own an entire continent as their blood and soil birthright the land was always going to end up like this

There’s still a lot of land out there. The only problem today is nobody wants to start over with no plumbing, electricity, or other modern conveniences.

asdf6969··on Inheriting is becoming nearly as important as working
Almost everyone I know got several hundred thousand dollars gifted for a down payment and most of these people are from typical middle or upper middle class backgrounds. I have a top 2% income (by Canadian standards) but the best I can do is a 2 bedroom condo or a bottom of the market townhouse with a long commute

I don’t know a single neighborhood in this city where the average household in that neighborhood makes enough to live there with current prices.

I genuinely don’t know why I even work anymore. I don’t have any achievable financial goals except save as much as I can until I move away to live off my savings in a cheap area

asdf6969··on Finding Flow: Escaping digital distractions through deep work and slow living
> focusing on other people, and their motivations, and what they get out of whatever they're doing

I want to focus on this because I don’t believe in the idea of an authentic self and I want to know how anyone can find something that makes them feel this way, or at least how they can trick themselves into thinking some boring topic like writing productivity advice blogs can feel meaningful. Put this guy’s birth in 1800 and I’m sure he won’t feel any sense of loss because he can’t write anymore.

asdf6969··on Finding Flow: Escaping digital distractions through deep work and slow living
I want to know where their goals and favourite source of flow come from. Do any of these bloggers know what they’re writing or does it just sound good to other people who are also aimlessly playing on the computer? I want more depth.

It’s a lot more enjoyable and “flow”y to get stoned and watch YouTube all day everyday but I know that’s not what he’s talking about. I want to know what’s so great about the work and personal lives of these productivity guru guys. Seems like they all just make another data analytics tool, AI toys, or write blogs for each other.

asdf6969··on Finding Flow: Escaping digital distractions through deep work and slow living
Why don’t posts like this ever explain what the end goal is? The biggest problem in my life is that all this work and productivity feels meaningless. Everyone is always writing as if these goals are common knowledge but I don’t even know why I work anymore other than I can’t retire yet.
