asddddd··on The Depression Thing
My perspective is that your approach here, talking about depression as an external influence that is not you - just an oppressive influence on you that must be fought off - was actively harmful for improving my mental state.

The day I stopped viewing myself as an ideality rather than reality, the day I realized everything I thought, felt, believed, and did was me and absolutely none of it wasn't, was the day I found an ability to change instead of deny.

Also, I'd say it is very easy to approach this with a defeatist attitude (consciously or unconsciously) if you have a belief that you are sick. Only time can fix a broken bone, so if your mind is broken, can you really change it - is it a futile effort to try?

Don't listen to a nut on the internet, though.

I said 1 month because the initial email I got was on 3/31/16, stating expiration effective 5/1, then another email retracting the expiration of my referral credits on 4/27.

Also, blog post here https://blog.digitalocean.com/details-on-expiring-digitaloce...

asddddd··on Persisting state between AWS EC2 spot instances
For anyone curious: DO issued a ton of promo credit in the past, with an unlimited redemption period, then eventually last year said that credit would expire 12mo after redemption - effective after a month.

They backtracked on that regarding non-promo credit (referrals etc) and gave a 1-year grace period.

FWIW, I've been very happy with DO, had a couple $5 VPSes there for 3-4 years and they've been remarkably reliable. One host migration, one SLA credit and lengthy failure analysis, and a bunch of notifications ahead of time for maintenance. More than I'd expect for most hosts in the price range.

Not the most powerful for your money, of course, but awesome if you need to run some services with a public IP and consistent uptime.

> ...if the US government would be after my data, DO would prevent them from accessing it.

This is completely unrealistic. If the [local jurisdiction government] is after your data, they'll have your host, ISP, and anyone else give it to them.

(Inexplicable downtime = your server being imaged.)

Believing anything else, IMO, is purely delusional.

asddddd··on Amazon Is Testing Its Own Delivery Service to Rival FedEx and UPS
> So why are you delivering it at 11am when you know I'm at work?

The driver has a 200-250 stop route optimized for efficiency, they attempt delivery when near your house. At 7pm a driver has been on the clock for over 10 hours; this is unlikely to change due to air delivery commitments. Over peak season 14 hour days (DoT limit) is very common, with a 14-hour delivery window it's simply not possible to get everyone's packages to them in the evening.

asddddd··on Even God Would Get Fired as an Active Investor (2016)
Because if you're comfortable, it's probably because either you aren't trading enough for it to be worth the time (it's a hobby) or you have so much in the bank that trading performance is mostly about whether you can afford a Monet.
asddddd··on Even God Would Get Fired as an Active Investor (2016)
The biggest problem IMO is being able to stomach trading a very large fraction (or more likely, multiples) of your annual salary and not being affected by very large red numbers. If you stop thinking rationally, you lose. If you experience too much stress, might as well sell your time instead and avoid the drug habits.

In other words, you have to be able to put your house on red, and restrain yourself from doing it unless you're certain the numbers are in your favour.

I don't think many people can do this.

asddddd··on Alice in Python projectland
Maybe, the project as a whole seems to be under a year old and is under very active development.

Probably 7.0.0 or 3.2.9, where current version is 8.2.6: https://github.com/kennethreitz/pipenv/blob/master/HISTORY.t...

Also, I guess --python 3.4 would be the preferred way to do it, seems to work with either versions or executables.

asddddd··on Sitting down too much is doing more harm to your body than you can imagine
While some exercise is probably better than none, doing only push-ups can end up being harmful. I was thinking of postural issues[1] like Upper Cross Syndrome[2], very common among people who sit at a computer all day and don't exercise. Focusing on already-strong/tight muscles like the pecs will be unhelpful for correcting these issues, and can certainly exacerbate them. That said, I may have overreacted due to conflating bench presses with push-ups.

As for programming languages, I've sent "pull requests" for AutoHotKey programs via Reddit PM before. If it's the right tool (or a decent one) for the job...

asddddd··on ‘Daily Stormer’ Termination Haunts Cloudflare in Online Piracy Case
> Maybe it's an elaborate troll.

Of course it is. The entire point is provocation. How many people heard of Daily Stormer for the first time as a result of this whole drawn-out incident? Rather more than knew about it in the first place, I'd wager, judging by Google Trends and overall coverage.

Look at Stormfront, a more obscure (but probably worse) website: their domain got locked, but they seem to have it back now. Interestingly, it appears to be a registrar that issued a statement denouncing Daily Stormer.

asddddd··on Sitting down too much is doing more harm to your body than you can imagine
I wouldn't recommend focusing on push-ups, they are counterproductive if you have the typical "computer posture" with hunched/forward shoulders. Chin-ups, rows, and similar are likely to be a better idea.
asddddd··on Toward a Predictive Theory of Depression
Note that creatine should be avoided if you're bipolar, according to a study or two and a lot of anecdotes.

Kidneys: https://examine.com/nutrition/does-creatine-cause-kidney-pro...

Overall, it's a very safe and moderately effective supplement, particularly if you don't eat a lot of red meat. Just make sure to drink enough water.

I wouldn't say I've been depressed (a psychiatrist might disagree, I've been dx'ed with it in the past), but daily 5mg creatine and 2k IU vitamin D have made a remarkable difference in mood/energy for me this year.

asddddd··on Keybase's mission is to make encryption mainstream
If you have a rooted phone, there is another option: copying off the sqlite database. At that point you can generate QR codes with a tool like WinAuth. Bit of a pain, but very doable (if you rooted your phone.)

Bypassing this with Authy is generally a better idea.

asddddd··on What happens if you turn off the traffic lights?
Good to know, thanks! What gets me is that a lot of the automatic lights are of a different variety that works fine, and in some cases there's a bike lane up to a light that is incapable of detecting you (without switching lanes, at least).
asddddd··on What happens if you turn off the traffic lights?
Another difference (most likely) is that it's quite common for US traffic lights to switch only when they detect traffic on one of the roads, and this rarely works with bicycles.

Nothing like sitting at a red for 2 minutes before realizing you have to either run it or go on the sidewalk.

Maybe not so common on the East Coast, but 4-way stops are another can of worms here. Most drivers expect you'll ignore the stop sign and will yield for you. Some will refuse to go even after you're at a complete stop and got there after them, at which point it's a standoff. Doing a rolling stop (Idaho stop - illegal most places) ends up being the safest option most of the time.

asddddd··on Is Trump mulling Peter Thiel for a top intelligence advisory post?
The general school of thought (that Thiel is linked to) is called neoreaction or the Dark Enlightenment. Here's a fairly good intro by Scott Alexander: http://slatestarcodex.com/2013/03/03/reactionary-philosophy-...
asddddd··on Is Trump mulling Peter Thiel for a top intelligence advisory post?
> the alt-right, which is a small, far-right movement that seeks a whites-only state.

It amuses me to see every article about the "alt right" define it as something different.

asddddd··on How the Bitcoins Were Stolen from Mt. Gox [video]
You see a business destined to fail, I see a line of incompetent exchanges playing Russian roulette. One of them died and the rest got lucky.

Bitstamp, Bitfinex, Cryptsy, more I've forgotten, were the competitors really more reliable?

I've been in a position to see some absolutely insane stuff happen on exchanges [most of it gets quietly buried), and I really don't think MtGox was anything remarkably different.

asddddd··on Why Is Python Growing So Quickly?
Twisted is a massive codebase, and uses zope.interface. There are definitely options for stricter guarantees, but it's optional, and generally you'd rather be treating input as ducks.

Also, even without actual type checking (mypy), IDE support + type hinting (PEP 484 or reST et al) means you can find most issues before the interpreter/compiler is involved. PyCharm is fantastic at this.

asddddd··on As Amazon Pushes Forward with Robots, Workers Find New Roles
> a few thousand seasonal workers year round.

You're vastly underestimating what sort of effects "peak season" has. UPS hires 95,000 temporary employees each year; FedEx hires 50,000. Amazon hires 120,000. Retail scales up similarly, but I'm less familiar with the industry.

"A few thousand" is how much single distribution centers scale up employment.

asddddd··on Google will punish sites that use annoying pop-up ads
Most websites aren't being fined billions by your government!
asddddd··on Use pew, not virtualenvwrapper, for Python virtualenvs
It doesn't matter much, it's all just sugar over virtualenvs (which are quite simple conceptually). Virtualenvwrapper has been around a long time and works pretty well.

More recent tools are Pipenv (which I've been using) and hatch - I don't think there is any One True Way since the days of virtualenvwrapper being the latest and shiniest.

If you want a really easy to use tool that doesn't require any understanding of virtualenvs, I'd look at Pipenv.

asddddd··on How Taser inserts itself into investigations involving its own weapons
Look at a case like Shkreli's [1], where the case (and it's facts) are generally unrelated to most media coverage and public opinion. Is it an impartial jury if they decide to convict the defendant based on evidence which is irrelevant to the case (and thus excluded)?

Packaging/distribution is certainly a mess.

asddddd··on Ask HN: What books have made the biggest impact on your mental models?
The Divided Self (R. D. Laing). Bit dense at times, and perhaps not relevant to many on HN, but a truly fascinating examination of the edges of sanity.
asddddd··on Show HN: A hackable cryptocoin graph builder
Looks like "chart" would be more accurate, I thought/hoped "graph" was related to blockchain graph analysis which is quite interesting.
asddddd··on Mailable Live Animals
Yeah, stuff goes wrong in shipping, particularly since it seems most people have a vague idea that packages just teleport to the destination. When it gets cold, this means issues like exploding wine bottles and frozen tropical fish.
