aschla··on Ask HN: Is anyone else bearish on OpenAI?
As an aside, when did we start using "bearish" and "bullish" to refer to sentiment outside of financial instruments?
aschla··on That “Dreaded” Commute Is Good for Your Health
Unreal delusion and/or out of touch.

"You are commuters. For the day, week, year, or decade, you are bonded by a common struggle. That brings you closer. That makes you better colleagues. That alloys you in social contract."

You'll suffer, but you'll all suffer together, so that's good.

aschla··on Using Super Glue
I've been using super glue to assemble 3D printed models lately. Loctite gel is my favorite right now. It's available at all major hardware stores and is easy to control. My only gripe is the size (.14 oz). They put it in a large "bottle" which is actually a mechanical container for the small tube in the inside. You can disassemble the container and find the small tube that's actually labeled for the European market since it's made in Ireland. Not sure why Loctite thinks the U.S. needs a special container, maybe they think the average American will fall for the larger "bottle" compared to other brands standard tube for the same price?

I'll likely be looking around for a more reasonably priced gel because of this, maybe something from McMaster-Carr.

aschla··on A keypad to control my desk setup
Wasn't aware it was possible to switch LG TV sources via Home Assistant. Set up a Autokey script to call the Home Assistant API to trigger a script to switch sources between my work Mac and personal PC. Works great, don't need to move my hands from the keyboard and is much quicker than using the remote.
aschla··on Amazon packages pile up after AWS outage spawns delivery havoc
Here in Chicago every item on Amazon is showing an earliest delivery date of Saturday the 11th. Checked an item today I had bought yesterday and delivered overnight, the item is now showing available delivery as Saturday. What a terrible time of the year for this to happen to them.
aschla··on Nuclear weapons agency breached amid massive cyber onslaught
This is no longer the case, they’ve since upgraded: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/10/24/us/nuclear-weapons-floppy...
aschla··on Software will eat software in a remote-first world
"Say software one more goddamn time!"

I don't really agree with the point that because we're creating things that allow us to use less or no code, there will be less code to write. We make things easier for ourselves so we can then build upon it and then write more complex things to solve more complex problems. It's the continual layering of abstraction that's been going on for decades.

aschla··on CDC says coronavirus survived in Princess Cruise ship cabins for up to 17 days
From the report:

“SARS-CoV-2 RNA was identified on a variety of surfaces in cabins of both symptomatic and asymptomatic infected passengers up to 17 days after cabins were vacated on the Diamond Princess...”

Presence of RNA does not necessarily mean it’s a viable virus.
