From what I've read about this specific incident, it seems this was enabled by the fact that this project had been moved to GitHub Enterprise without the maintainers' knowledge. One of the features of GitHub Enterprise is that some privileged users in the organization can bypass such restrictions. That may be what happened here.

arusahni··on Zig cc: A drop-in replacement for GCC/Clang (2020)
Another thing that's really cool, here: they've published the language (and toolchain) to PyPi. So, with a simple

    pip install ziglang
You can do

    python3 -m ziglang cc my_c_prog.c -o my_c_prog
    ./my_c_prog
A great way to do compilation on a system without needing to get a C toolchain installed, if you already have Python available

Yes. Not sure how I got mixed up.

arusahni··on Apache Superset 1.1
Congrats to the Superset team! The project has been on my radar for a while.

Does anyone know what the current status of embedding dashboards within an application is (given the RBAC PR linked in the release notes)? I'm looking for ways to do some rapid prototyping without sacrificing security to an openly-accessible iframe.

Pun intended?
arusahni··on Practical SQL for Data Analysis
In addition to the recommendation for sqlite, I've found `csvkit` to be an extremely useful set of CLI tools for CSV munging. The `csvsql` [1] entrypoint is especially handy because it allows you to issue SQL queries against your CSV file directly vs. loading then querying.

arusahni··on Remove RMS from the GCC Steering Committee
Curious as to why this has been flagged? I haven't editorialized anything, this isn't a repost, and the OP has a voice that holds weight in the community (making this newsworthy).

To those reporting this due to it being critical of RMS, is "free as in speech" just a fun tagline vs. a guiding principal?

arusahni··on Ubuntu Makes Flutter ‘Default Choice’ for Future Desktop Apps
As a KDE fan, the recent changes to QT's licensing have me concerned. [1] Given that Flutter compiles to native code, and doesn't require shipping a V8 engine with each application like Electron, this seems like a reasonable decision for them to make.

WebKit has to be open source because it's a KHTML fork.
arusahni··on A Poetic Apology: Or Why Should You Use Poetry to Manage Python Dependencies
I'm glad tools like Poetry exist, as they're filling pretty horrible gaps in the Python ecosystem.

> The only reason to use pip-tools is because you already know it and you don't want to switch (yet).

Actually, I settled on pip-tools _after_ trying Poetry :-)

> pip-tools is squarely worse than using Poetry.

News to me. Like I said in my original comment: "I personally still find Poetry and Pipenv to be a little heavy-handed for my preferred workflows." A tool that gets out of my way and lets me achieve my goals is a better tool for me. Since Poetry can't meet me where I am, pip-tools is better _for me_.

arusahni··on A Poetic Apology: Or Why Should You Use Poetry to Manage Python Dependencies
I personally still find Poetry and Pipenv to be a little heavy-handed for my preferred workflows. To that end, pip-tools [1] is what I recommend to those who feel similarly. It balances pinning and dependency management with common Python practices (e.g., requirements.txt).

arusahni··on Show HN: Ht – HTTPie Clone in Rust
IIRC I'd need both pipx and pyenv, because pipx alone will use whatever Python distribution is in my path.
arusahni··on Show HN: Ht – HTTPie Clone in Rust
Another advantage: your installation isn't tethered to a system Python implementation that may go away and nuke the env.
arusahni··on Pip has dropped support for Python 2
Worth clarifying, too: if you have tooling that depends on `get-pip.py`, you'll need to change your reference to https://bootstrap.pypa.io/2.7/get-pip.py

Their API (MusicKit) is decent, but the rate limiting is fairly onerous.

arusahni··on AWS announces forks of Elasticsearch and Kibana
I'm extremely skeptical of AWS's ability to deliver a compelling, featured ES fork up against Elastic. Unless they actively hire contributors, they're going to get lapped functionality-wise.
arusahni··on Periodical cicada Brood X will emerge in 15 states in 2021

arusahni··on Apple's MacBook revival plan: Bring back old features
