arunc··on Do you avoid the news? You’re in growing company
Glad to see this on HN. I stopped watching/listening/reading news in 2011 due to constant negativity and fear mongering. I don't miss it.
arunc··on Effective Rust (2021)
What is Rust's answer for Structured Concurrency?
arunc··on TOTP Authentication with Free Software
I use the following:

1. On Android: Authenticator pro

2. On desktop: KeePass (with totp support)

[2] https://keepass.info/help/base/placeholders.html#otp

arunc··on Passkeys: The beginning of the end of the password
It seems like passkey isn't available for Google Workspace yet. (I'm a Google Workspace admin as well).
arunc··on Is parallel programming hard, and, if so, what can you do about it? [pdf]

arunc··on Sloth – A Mac app that shows all open files, directories, sockets, etc.
Reminds me of the awesome Gnome2 widgets that were so simple and elegant.
arunc··on I wish Asciidoc was more popular
Not easy and not out of the box. You have to fight it out.
arunc··on Show HN: Chrome extension to close Zoom/Notion tabs after launching desktop app
Might probably work with zoom.com. However it doesn't close zoom.us, albeit code says otherwise.

https://github.com/zchr/zoomies/blob/cb75091152518b27a003ce8...

arunc··on VSCode Swift 1.0
Does anyone know of any reliable VSCode extension for Kotlin (Android or server side)?
arunc··on Lula Becomes Brazil’s President, Bolsonaro Flees to Florida
In a democratic country, why would Bolsonaro flee if he is innocent?
arunc··on Ask HN: What RSS Reader do you use in 2022?
59 MB Android app. No, thanks.
arunc··on Facial recognition tech gets woman booted from Rockettes show due to employer
Face recognition was used to identify a lawyer who works for a company involved in actively suing MSG group. She was booted due to her being a lawyer at that company. Her identify was flagged. She was visually identified and then her id was checked.

IMHO, it’s a bullshit story because the issue is whether a lawyer working for a company suing MSG should be booted from other MSG venues.

Companies/venues had blacklists (deny lists) before face recognition became ubiquitous.

arunc··on Ask HN: What platform/tool do you use for software documentation?
I wish it received more love, because asciidoc does. It's a complete documentation system allowing the users to write simple docs or full fledged books at ease.
arunc··on GIMP Turns 27
GIMP was the birth place of GTK, which was later renamed to GTK+ after it was rewritten to be object oriented. GNOME desktop environment still uses GTK+
arunc··on Earth now weighs six ronnagrams: New metric prefixes voted in
And here in US, we are stuck with imperial units like it was 1800s: oz, pounds, inches, feet, miles, etc for all common usage. When a foreigner visits here, the first thing they realize is how US has truly siloed itself from the rest of the world.
arunc··on Podman Desktop: A Free OSS Alternative to Docker Desktop
Help me understand, is this a replacement for docker desktop? Docker desktop provides kubernetes in a neat way. Does podman provide k8s on WSL?
arunc··on Next C compiler is a D compiler: Introducing DMD's ImportC
C has head const and it's pretty common in C code bases. From what I remember, D had transitive const and not head const, so how does ImportC deal with this now?

Is head const now supported in DMD with ImportC?

https://dlang.org/articles/const-faq.html

arunc··on Dozens in cardiac arrest in Halloween crowds in South Korea
What an insane, click bait title from BBC! No mention of stampede!
arunc··on Why is D's garbage collection slower than Go's?
> The people who want to drag D into the Java/C# territory are the problem in my opinion

Absolutely and that's the majority of D community.

> took what C had to offer and put it to the next level

ImportC is a fantastic stuff that Walter is working on.

> simplify the language

Sane defaults, but the ship has sailed. Reminds me of a talk Scott Meyers gave a while ago "The last thing D needs (is to hire him)". I think it's time they hire him.

> compiler performance

Rather focus on just LDC or GDC and drop DMD altogether. DMD is a good piece of software, but for such a small community, I find it alarming that they waste human effort across 3 different compilers and still complain lack of resources.

arunc··on How to maintain engineering velocity as you scale
This is my practical experience. I couldn't have put it better in words! Thanks!
arunc··on Rust in the Linux Kernel: Just the Beginning
It doesn't matter. Java is safe (thanks to it's GC) albeit having null pointer. Very few languages offered that guarantee.
arunc··on Rust in the Linux Kernel: Just the Beginning
FWIW, Walter Bright have been, for years, proposing the C standard to fix the billion dollar mistake in a backwards compatible way. Stroustrup is the head of the C standards committee, just saying.
arunc··on Rust in the Linux Kernel: Just the Beginning
Compilers are just short running tools. They can hog as much memory for the short period during compilation and die away after that. But a kernel is a critical piece of long software that can have CVE. The criticality is not to have the CVE in the first place.
arunc··on Rust in the Linux Kernel: Just the Beginning
How many other languages have been merged to Linux other than C and Rust? Zero. (Ignore perl scripts, etc)

Did you look at the PR that was merged?

https://git.kernel.org/pub/scm/linux/kernel/git/torvalds/lin...

This is not trivial work. This will only get over better over time (with funding), all for safe and secure Linux for the mass!!

The only thing that concerns me now is the Rust code in kernel is not GPLv2. Not sure if that's intentional.

arunc··on How Rust 1.64 became faster on Windows
> On 11/07/2022 Jakub Beránek announced

Not to be snobby, but I wish everyone used a standard date format.

arunc··on Comparing Floating-Point Numbers Is Tricky (2017)
Probably back in 1.100000004632568359375 days.

Wait, when did HN become reddit?!

arunc··on Google engineers joked about how incognito mode isn't incognito
Makes me worried if the common internet user has lost it all to these corporations. Are there true privacy centric browsers out there? No, not Tor.
arunc··on Introduction to Dlang [video]
-betterC is the way to go for embedded. Checkout this blog as well: https://dlang.org/blog/2021/06/01/driving-with-d/
arunc··on Zig-style generics are not well-suited for most languages
I don't think it's true. Show some example?

Templates work even in betterC mode.

arunc··on What Makes the Zig Programming Language Unique?
> What an amazing language. There aren't many 3rd party libraries, though. And whatever exists is highly questionable.

Can't agree more. Such a powerful language but with an absolute meager ecosystem! No dogfooding.

GC and crashes are pretty common on long running high performance apps. They should just build things from the ground up using betterC.
