arunc··on Pat Gelsinger was wrong for Intel
> Worse, in his own story, the bad things at Intel always seemed to happen when he wasn’t in the room or otherwise over his objections — and the good things always when he was called in to save an effort from failure.

Sounds like spoken by my current boss. During a 1on1, he took up the topic of me apologizing to the team for something I overlooked. He said, in his exact words, "when things go wrong, a smart leader should blame their team and when things are in their favor they should take credit for that. That's how you grow as a leader in organization, in this corporate ladder. You should learn. Long way to go".

I was like, "no way he said that!". I trusted the wrong person and joined this organization! (Sorry about the rant)

arunc··on Ask HN: Platform for senior devs to learn other programming languages?
Absolutely. Simple and fast language, simple and fast build system!
arunc··on Phonetic Matching
I created this sheet[0] to tech my kid to learn Tamil using Roman letters and in the process figured it could be useful for kids learning other Indian languages as well.

With the history of reading and speaking (Indian) phonetic languages, I think, English would've been much nicer and uniform if the vowels sounded right, esp the long forms.

Extending the long forms using orthogonal vowels probably made it complex, especially with the lack of ii and uu.

Say for instance, to extend the long form of "o", "a" was used. Eg: boat, goat. The correct spelling could've been boot, with the original boot spelled as buut.

With that notion, door is probably the only word that's written and pronounced phonetically correct, with two oo.

Curious to know how would such correct phonetic translation aid in the encoding, matching and compression.

Just wanted to share this. Be strong. The only thing that shall die in this world is hate! There is and will always hope!

For those not from the Usenet days, IANAL: I'm not a lawyer.
arunc··on How to setup self hosted wiki for your startup
Outline looks great. Thanks for creating it. Few questions:

1. Does it support rendering OpenAPI json/yaml?

2. Also it seems like it supports Draw.io via public URL. That's a no go. Can it support draw.io diagrams via attachments?

3. Google drive support is nice. Do you plan on supporting OneDrive as well?

arunc··on Seer: A GUI front end to GDB for Linux
Long time gdb TUI user, migrated to VSCode recently. Haven't looked back. Occasionally I do use TUI to look at the disassembly.
arunc··on New elliptic curve breaks 18-year-old record
As a typical software engineer, I'm just curious to know if my curve ed25519 key is safe and for how long. :)
arunc··on Contracts for C++ (DbC) [pdf]
Are there HTML version of these docs? Would make it easier to read without having to download a PDF.
arunc··on New elliptic curve breaks 18-year-old record
The animations makes it easier to comprehend indeed. Thanks!
arunc··on MdBook – a command line tool to create books with Markdown
I know you asked for MD based system, but if you are willing to look beyond MD, I'd encourage to look into Antora[0] that's based on AsciiDoc. It's a full fledged documentation system that can span from single article to multiple books or product or technical documentation.

Appreciate it, thanks!
arunc··on What's New in F# 9
What is the state of F# a replacement for C# to create GUI apps on Windows? Are there companies using F# for this purpose?

arunc··on Go Concurrency vs. RxJS
We ditched both and rewrote our services in Kotlin. We never looked back. Coroutines FTW!
arunc··on BookStack: Simple and Free Wiki Software
How does it handle tables? If it uses markdown and expects us to edit the tables in the markdown format, I'll stay away from it.
arunc··on BookStack: Simple and Free Wiki Software
Good to see simple wiki / confluence alternatives. But confluence is here to stay, with all it's rich features.

I switched jobs and thus move away from confluence to ADO wiki and life is never endingly painful for internal knowledge management!

Either there are 100s of word docx or there's confluence that can be easily queried, with various other capabilities using it's plugins for draw.io and mermaid.js.

Markdown for large tables is just silly and hard to maintain. AsciiDoc is great, but a bit too much for docs that are shared with product teams.

arunc··on Writing a book in the age of open source
We use AsciiDoc with Antora in our company. Most of the customer facing product docs are written in it.

arunc··on Uno: Create Beautiful Cross Platform .NET Apps Faster
Uno has been around for over 4 years. Wondering why this hasn't picked up so far, albeit being a very flexible platform/framework.
arunc··on Losing my son
Sad and terrible! Reminds me of a story I read when I was young.

An Indian emperor invited a wise man to his court and asked him to write a wish that will last forever. He wrote:

1. The emperor dies

2. His son dies

3. His grandson dies

The emperor was furious and ordered him to be punished. The wise man asked if he can have an opportunity to explain and the emperor agreed.

The wise man explained that he wrote what he wishes as the natural order of life in the kingdom. He asked the emperor to consider how terrible the situation would be if any of the order in that is changed. The emperor realized the truth in this and thanked the wise man.

arunc··on Crafting Self-Evident Code with D
I'm a D expat using and managing Rust now. Do I miss D, yes. The D syntax is so beautiful and easy to follow. D code was always plastic, except there's just too many attrs @safe, @system, @oh-god-what-next that don't play well with each other.

However, the runtime - not so much. I didn't complain much. We rewrote all of our core utils written in D (and many in C++) to Rust. No more null. Yes it took a while to onboard everyone to Rust, but hey, there's been zero production downtime since we migrated. Crazy compile times with Rust (compared to D), but we are happy with production runtimes!

Rust is what D should've been, but it's crazy verbose! I can live with that and I do love Rust.

arunc··on Ask HN: Which is the oldest software alive still in 0.x, used by many?
Interesting to know that zer0ver exists! Do you know how they claim it to be the most popular versioning scheme?

Put it on a GitHub repo with a file ARCHITECTURE.md. It helps you write diagrams with Mermaid if needed.
