Thank you, well explained!
artifix··on As a freelancer, what happens when the door won't open any more?
I'm not humble bragging. I do mean it. I've been called "the brain", "the goat" at clients. I can't help it ;)

I've been doing freelancing for 30 years. I no longer understand what is going on with this market, especially in the UK and EU. It has become impossible. So I wrote this article trying to understand it. I'd welcome any comments or perspectives from freelancers out there. Have you had these experiences or is it just me?

SEEKING WORK: Remote from EU.

I'm a senior technical specialist for startups. I offer assessment, planning, strategy, architecture, design, build, deploy and management services.

I have 25+ years of hands-on experience across all IT roles. I tune my deliverables to exactly what the client needs. I don't do one-size-fits-all solutions. I know how to use AI intelligently, when it works and when it doesn't. I don't do vibe coding.

Some of the things I've done recently:

- Stealth startup: Agentic build of a v1 streaming service: production quality design, billing/analytics/reporting engines, PWA, catalog import, play tracking

- Publishing startup: Built a pipeline for automated translation, validation and generation of .indd documents for ebooks

- Fintech startup: Greenfield DevOps implementation (cloud architecture, IaC, CI/CD) in a regulated environment

- Social media startup: ML pipeline for programmatic detection of social and music trends based on media plays

- Ecommerce startup: Designed an ML-powered analysis system to correlate search results and purchase behaviour

artifix··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
I have an epub which says 2003 but then says also says 2015, so now I'm confused ;)
artifix··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
Wow; didn't know about this list but I've read quite a few of those on it. For sci-fi, Robert Heinlein and Ursula Le Guin are my absolute favorite authors. I've read all I could find of both authors. They have seen me through many train rides commuting to clients.
artifix··on Ask HN: What are you reading?
About to tackle Princes of the Yen by Richard Werner.

My wife just sent me a video of his: what I didn't know about central banking! TBH I'm shocked. Apparently we'd all be so much better if we had more local banks doing local lending to local businesses.

Explains a lot, actually, so I even mentioned him in an article I just wrote about my freelancing career. Now I know why the market has been increasingly impossible ...

WHO: Technology Polymath. Agentic context & harness engineering.

WHAT: Whether human or AI built, I know how systems break. I build them so they don't. After three decades of battle-tested experience there isn't a failure mode I don't know how to fix. When it comes to AI, I design and architect systems using my own rigorous engineering approach that insures consistent delivery and drift control.

SAMPLE WORK:

  ** Recent agentic builds:
    - multi-server streaming service (NodeJS, Typescript, Postgres, Claude Code, Codex, custom agentic harness)
    - DevOps deployment tooling (Terraform, CI/CD)
    - DevOps observability platform with RAG pipelines (InfluxDB, LangChain, Claude CodePython, NodeJS)
    - RAG ebook build pipeline for a publishing company (Cohere, OpenAI, Voyage, Mistral, LanceDB, LLaMA)
** API-enabled SaaS platform using Solana smart contracts (Rust, Codex)
** AI-built mobile & desktop app development (NodeJS, React, C++/QT)
** Azure architecture & DevOps for a banking compliance company
  ** Ethereum L1 packer-based automation
** Global multi-cloud, Kubernetes-based PaaS cloud design and DevOps for an IoT data platform
** Custom architecture & development for startups and specialised cloud models
I work with companies and teams who honestly want to deliver the best product they can. I'm serious about my work and I work only with equally serious people. If you want systems built right the first time, I'm your guy.
