artifact_44··on Box3D, an open source 3D physics engine
Physx and Havok have been around for a while and dominate in the games industry for a huge class of games since they are integrated in Unreal and Unity.

On the web alone, there is also:

ammo.js, - a wasm port of bullet

cannon.js, - a hand rolled engine

oimo.js, - an older hand roll

rapier.js - a newer hand roll

jolt.js - a newer engine based on the engine used in horizon zero dawn.

physx.js/wasm - nvidia wasm port of physx

havok.js/wasm - microsoft endowed wasm port of havok (used in babylon)

I've been in the space for a while, and anecdotally, PhysX is the most robust, stable, and vying for speed with Havok which is slightly faster, but makes some different accuracy choices for speed. ammo/(Bullet) was one of the earliest serious engines to make it to the web.

r.e. - Box3d - Erin Catto is pretty legendary in the physics engine scene for (box2d).. it has powered a huuuuge number of games that many of us have likely enjoyed...

So I'm definitely gonna keep my eyes on this one!

artifact_44··on Tempest vs. Tempest: The Making and Remaking of Atari's Iconic Video Game
Same. Super down to earth. We had our office next to his company that was making a graphics processing tool called Debabelizer. We used it heavily in our games workflow, and would occasionally find bugs... more than once, Dave came over to our office and debugged it on his laptop right in front of us. Truly inspirational dude.
artifact_44··on Richard Feynman's blackboard at the time of his death (1988)
Because she thoroughly de-articulates the fabricated mystique around Feynman, and openly discusses the toxic effect his legacy has had on science. (Including the fact that a lot of his legacy was fabricated by people that either admired him, or wished to capitalize on that legacy.) Her video on Feynman is long and detailed, and very sobering. I highly recommend it. It absolutely/expertly challenged everything I thought I knew about him.

artifact_44··on I accidentally Blender VSE
As a blender user, I am soooo grateful to OP. I think blender is one of if not the most important/impressive open project ever.
artifact_44··on Kiwi Farms is down across all domains as DDoS-Guard terminates service
I Keffals broke the law, then that is a matter for law enforcement. It's not the purview of an internet hate mob acting as judge, jury, and executioner. Every defense I've seen of kiwifarms is exactly like yours. Some insinuations about how "distasteful" an individual is, and then an implied "Can you really blame them for going after him/her?"
artifact_44··on Chimpanzees have diverse vocal sequences with ordered recombinatorial properties
Do you know of any projects using automated transcription and machine learning to analyze hominid speech? I ask because I remember reading about google translate effectively learning how to translate languages purely through machine learning and a large corpus of transcribed speech.
artifact_44··on Why I quit this battle
I disagree. That text doesn't sound psychotic to me.. bitter, yes.. but I think HN users are all too familiar with being passionate about an issue at the expense of personal time and other pursuits, and I respect that.
artifact_44··on The idea of uploading consciousness is misdirected narcissism
People are already effectively playing as NPCs in popular videogames. They're called gold farmers.

If you gave me the option as I got closer to 70, that I could be uploaded, and take up zero physical space, and live forever, I would jump at the chance. I don't think it's narcissistic at all. Imagine being able to communicate with your ancestors.. the opportunities for preserving knowledge and ending physical suffering, including the impact of humans living on the planet. Maybe we all just live forever until we run out of disk space. Maybe eventually we can have a lottery/queue where people take turns getting decanted for some IRL living.

artifact_44··on Lawsuit filed alleging Google is paying Apple to stay out of the search business
One incentive for them doing this is that they have to provide support and if they let everyone use random search engines that deliver malware etc. They end up having to pay their "geniuses" more to un-crud peoples infested machines.
artifact_44··on Ask HN: Have you found something you love to do? If yes how?
3d graphics and simulations. It's kike infinite Legos.
artifact_44··on Don't soften feedback
Tldr.. fonts suck. Article could have been 5 sentences and been more digestible.
artifact_44··on Open-source automated insulin delivery system given approval by team of experts
So grateful for the engine of capitalism/free market, that has people 3d printing insulin pumps for themselves.
artifact_44··on Ask HN: Do You Use a Debugger?
I use the chrome debugger as my IDE. I have been using it to edit/run/debug javascript for years now.

My entire development stack is installed on any machine that runs chrome. It's awesome.

I too have seen the. Lassic robot dystopia film Runaway.
artifact_44··on An Open Letter Against Apple's Privacy-Invasive Content Scanning Technology
Why are they telling everyone and not just doing it? Seems like aiding and abetting, if you've already dismissed the privacy aspect...
artifact_44··on Time to assume that health research is fraudulent until proven otherwise?
That was my first thought as well. Casting doubt, and then in a few days we'll see this opinion piece references by some right wing politician who is vaccinated but "can understand their constituents hesitency to trust the medical establishment".

Also I haven't seen anyone bring up the perverse incentive of capitalism in this thread. Like.. let's just pretend this is moral failing rather than the literal race to the bottom of capitalism.

artifact_44··on Ask HN: Reinforcement learning for single, lower end graphic cards?
Check out Andrej karpathys convnet.js and deepq learning web apps.
artifact_44··on Facebook will start putting ads in Oculus Quest apps
Also, Palmer Luckey is a weird libertarian/asshole, so who knows.. FB acquisition might have been a net benefit.
artifact_44··on DeepMind says reinforcement learning is ‘enough’ to reach general AI
Anthropic principle
artifact_44··on Why Can't Computing at the Heart of Bitcoin Be More Useful?
So.. somehow the heat output of a mining computer just disappears? Oh wait that's nonsense, because your CPU is literally a heat pump.
artifact_44··on Why Can't Computing at the Heart of Bitcoin Be More Useful?
nonsense. it's electricity. Gas doesn't have the option of coming from carbon neutral sources.
artifact_44··on nginx: 1-byte memory overwrite vulnerability in DNS resolver (CVE-2021-23017)
Uh. That sounds.. kinda bad in the context of something like.... DNS.
artifact_44··on Charlie Bit My Finger video to be taken off YouTube after selling for £500k
Enjoying all the confused dog faces in here, trying to understand this.

Its just capitalism, and capitalism is arbitrary and cruel.

When it's you making the money, it starts to make sense pretty quickly.

When it's not you making the money, it feels like egregious sin.

Its. Just. Capitalism.

artifact_44··on Instanced Line Rendering Using WebGL
What a gorgeous writeup. Love it. Gonna go make some lines now.
artifact_44··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge

artifact_44··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
100%
artifact_44··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
..they said authoritatively, and without evidence.
artifact_44··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
But.. I pay my YouTube subscription with my Bitcoin. :(
artifact_44··on Ethereum will use around 99.95% less energy post merge
Because electricity costs money. When the cost of electricity exceeds the value of coin you mine, you will stop mining. If you make a coin that takes half as much energy to mine, miners will just mine twice as much of it. Its like y'all are just discovering capitalism for the first time.
