arthurk··on Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard - Now Available (Delivery on Aug. 28th)
Apple has a few employees working on MacPorts who, along with the ADC devs, did a great job updating it for Snow Leopard in the past few months.

1.8-rc1 has already been tagged in svn and I'm sure the final version will be ready in time :)

arthurk··on A First Erlang Program
Here's the reason: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=775727
arthurk··on Performance Measurements of Threads in Java and Processes in Erlang
This is funny. 30 people really voted this article up just because of "Erlang" in the title.

The article is from 1998 and the benchmarks were done on Win95. The CPU was a 200MHz Pentium MMX.

arthurk··on WebFinger
Back in the day you could finger Linus Torvalds to check for the most recent linux kernel version:

"8. Keeping track of current releases

Important new releases, programs, and ports are usually announced in comp.os.linux.announce. finger torvalds@klaava.helsinki.fi or finger @linux.cs.helsinki.fi to get some information about the current kernel."

arthurk··on Django CMS - The new CMS for Django
Django is a web framework not a CMS. Django-cms is just an implementation of a CMS in Django.
arthurk··on Django CMS - The new CMS for Django
The Django wiki has a nice comparison of cms apps:

http://code.djangoproject.com/wiki/CMSAppsComparison

arthurk··on Google Chrome 4.0: Fastest OS X browser by 34 per cent
The author compares the JavaScript performance of a Chromium nightly build with Safari 4.0 based solely on the SunSpider benchmark.

Lousy article behind a sensationalist title.

arthurk··on Why Portland is a great place for startups
This years DjangoCon (conference from 8th - 10th September; sprints from 10th to 12th sep) is in Portland, OR. It's my first time travelling to USA and I'm really looking forward to this :-)
arthurk··on Breakfast Can Wait. The Day's First Stop is Online
This reminds me of a chapter from Michael Lopp's book "Managing Humans":

"Each weekend morning, my process is this: I wake up, walk upstairs, sit down at the computer, and figure out what is happening on the planet. Once I'm comfortable that the sky is not falling, I walk to the kitchen, grind my coffee beans, and begin to boil water. While the water is heating up, I return to my computer and follow up on whatever tidbits tickled my fancy from my first pass. This morning, it was some font research, followed by looking into options for wireless headphones. Turns out, Sony sucks. Go figure. Water's boiling! Back to the kitchen, where I pour hot water into my French press and dig up my favorite ceramic cup. The coffee needs to sit for three minutes, which means back to the computer! OK, so why do Sony headphones suck? Poor sound quality? Bad design? Bit of both, really. Coffee's ready, so one more trip to the kitchen, where I pour the steaming brew into my favorite cup and travel, once more, back to my cave.

It looks like a lot of work, but I do it instinctively. It's a routine designed to do one thing — get me into the zone."

arthurk··on Ask HN: What kind of desk chair do you use?
"Markus" from Ikea
arthurk··on Why Jinja is not Django and why Django should have a look at it
I met Armin Ronacher (the author of Jinja) at this years EuroDjangoCon. He was actually hacking on Django's template system himself and closed one ticket after another (though he was told that he couldn't "just replace it").
arthurk··on Review my app - Guestlist: online event registration made simple
The contact form doesn't show error messages. It just displays a dialog with "submit" set as the text.
arthurk··on @font-face makes the web pretty (or ugly). (Needs FF 3.5 or Safari)
What browser are you using? I'm on Safari 4 and the page looked like this http://i31.tinypic.com/mvmgx0.png until the font was downloaded (took almost 10 seconds on my slow connection).

Edit: I tried it with Firefox and it does indeed use the default font until the new one is downloaded. The transition is not nice but better than nothing.

arthurk··on German parliament passes Internet censorship bill
Right. What I wanted so say is that you won't be able to just click the warning away.
arthurk··on German parliament passes Internet censorship bill
>> Users will still be able to access the flagged websites, but they will be advised that viewing child pornography is illegal.

That is not true. It won't be possible to access the website.

Edit: ... by just clicking the warning away.

arthurk··on Django design patterns
Good tips. I've noticed that I'm doing the same things on almost every new Django project that I start. So I created this sample project which I now serves me as a starting point: http://github.com/arthurk/django-exampleproject
arthurk··on The 25 Worst Tech Products of All Time (2006)

arthurk··on NASA Wants Your Ideas for Digitizing Rocket Scientist’s Notes
They could use reCaptcha for the text. The results on http://recaptcha.net/digitizing.html look promising.
arthurk··on Reading list for those who love to learn
I would also add "Don't Make Me Think" to the non-junk list. Great book about web usability.
arthurk··on No IE onboard Windows 7 in Europe
... by bundling its browser software in with its operating system.

I still don't understand why this is wrong. It's their os, let them do whatever they want with it. There are other operating systems around. They don't need to use Windows.

arthurk··on Complete List of Mac OS X Snow Leopard Enhancements
> Gamma 2.2. > The default gamma has been changed from 1.8 to 2.2

I've heard designers getting angry about this. Is there really such a big difference?

arthurk··on Google Chrome 2.0 - Fast but lacking features
"For Mac and Linux users, there’s still no Google Chrome for you."

You can grab the latest nighly build for OS X here: http://build.chromium.org/buildbot/snapshots/sub-rel-mac/

It works pretty well and the UI is great. However, there are still some features missing, like the ability to delete bookmarks.

arthurk··on Ask HN: Please review LM, an experimental ajax framework
Sure, but where is the download link?
arthurk··on Audion - The Story behind Panic's 2nd product
Did you try Fluke for FLAC playback? http://blowintopieces.com/fluke/ I know it's not native support but still better than nothing.
arthurk··on [dead]
Summary: Kevin Rose and Tim Ferris prefer Tea to Coffee.
