Building Livedocs, a modern day office suite. We're hiring!
BTW, I read your "about" section. Looks like you might genuinely benefit from this discussion :)
Note — I know many might disagree, because of very valid points, but for me personally, deployment is a nightmare. I really have no clue how that works. I didn't know SQLite3 (being file-based) needed special permissions on the .db file to be able to avoid an OSError, and the folder containing the file needed other permissions. The whole absolute-path-in-server-but-relative-will-work-locally, blah blah — This is really a irritating business for me.
Deployment ideally should be like —
$ sometool deploy myAwesomeApp
$ Enter <some-sort-of-username-for-server> — myServer
$ Enter <some-sort-of-password-or pem key location> — ••••••••••
$ Deploying...done!
$ Your app is live on YOUR-SERVER-IP
Too far off for many. Many might hate it, but trust me I personally know atleast 50 other developers who would benefit from a setup like this. Mostly people learning how to code, who just want to put their simple apps out there.
You should still check it out though. It might work for you.
And can I just add — WOOOOOO!! Okay. Sorry.
But about the app itself —
Love the simple design! You could add the "Available on App Store" button which looks more neat. But the app, and the website looks cool.
I think there is insufficient data for most people to tell you if you have a shot at YC. This is only ONE side of the whole story, which is PRODUCT. We may need to know about user stats, and so many other things. There may be some very experienced folks here who can help, though.
Best of luck, and I hope you get in! Kudos, my friend!
I will give it a shot :)
Kudos!
Edit — Tried it out! is awesome! A few minor things though – It's a little too similar to Trello for me to bother switching, but looks way better (subjective I know, but works well for me!)
and also this: For the buttons (signup button on the home page. The element:focus{outline: none;} is something that really goes a long way in showing polish and detail on the front end.
Edit — Infact, judging by the dress code, the video you've posted is from somewhere in South India (where internet was not banned)
SQLAlchemy + Python (preferably using Flask) and the Mega Tutorial by Miguel Grinberg is the best way to get started in web development. I realize every body has different methods that work for them, but not only did this work for me, it also was very well explained by Miguel and also as OP said, the documentation on SQLAlchemy.
It was sad to bid adieu to SQLAlchemy recently, as I picked up MongoDB (you should check out MongoEngine if you haven't!)
Also, don't let YC determine the fate of your startup. You are bound to fail or succeed based on your execution skills and hard work, and not whether you get accepted into YC or not. That being said, I wish you all the best! People like you are an inspiration and remind me to always do what you love.
"Each company who participates will get 20 minute office hours with a YC partner. They can do them in person at our office in Mountain View, CA or remotely on Skype."
This may take some getting used to, and a lot of debate if using this is really worth it, but it's something. Nice job! :)
