arsalanb··on Slate JS – A customizable framework for building rich text editors
This is something I may switch to, if it proves to have any significant advantages over Quill (https://quilljs.com/) which we currently use.

Currently it seems to not support customising and/or creating your own blots (like here — http://quilljs.com/guides/how-to-customize-quill/#customizin...)

Also, while we're at it, syncing operations (and example of which is shown here — https://www.slatejs.org/#/syncing-operations) was a hard concept to wrap my head around until I found this — https://operational-transformation.github.io/visualization.h...

Stored as a series of operational transformations, I think.

This site helps understand it — https://operational-transformation.github.io/

Can you explain the last sentence? Sort of blew my mind..
arsalanb··on Reddit AMA on Photopea, a free alternative to Photoshop used by 1.5M people
Seems like a herculean effort! +1 to the lad for making something that is seemingly so complex all by himself!
arsalanb··on Ask HN: What makes for a world-class software engineer?
I have tried to be world-class many times in my life. I have failed all times. I am 22, for reference, but it seems the like every time I "level up", I find myself improving but also my taste and what I define as "World class" improves.

When I was 14, "world class" meant somebody who could actually make a product that works because all I could do was write basic HTML. When I was 17, "world class" meant somebody who was capable of understanding the abstraction that was casually thrown around the internet. At 19, "world class" meant somebody working at FAANG (or whatever the equivalent of it then was) At 20-21 (last year) I thought it meant somebody who could code and sell to build products that affect millions/billions of lives, like Mark Zuckerberg (watched too much of The Social Network, I guess). It was Zuckerberg or GTFO

Of late I've realised that my skillset didn't matter as much as my ability to figure out how to figure things out and be consistent. Being self-taught and admittedly not "talented", I am in no way "world class" as you may define it, but I know I can figure things out on my own and ask the right people the right questions to continue growing as improving my taste in products.

So what I'm trying to say is world class is a very broad term, but I think if you constantly work on improving yourself you will eventually find you're improving, just like in any other aspect of life.

In hindsight, 14 to 17 year old me would consider current me pretty "World class"

arsalanb··on How to Raise Money (2013)
Yeah, but initially you make very little money. To make more money (at least enough to hire somebody), you need to improve your product or sell it to way more people, for which you need money.

Often times you even need money to build your product in the first place.

arsalanb··on Ask HN: Where to go for the cheapest EE degree in the U.S.? In the World?
AFAIK (Because I studied at one of these institutes) it's open to only NRIs (non-resident Indians)
arsalanb··on Ask HN: What's your favorite way of getting a web app up quickly in 2018?
A year ago I would say Flask + Firebase, but now I have began to understand that that is the quickest way to build a web app FOR ME.

The best tech stack is the one that gets the job done FOR YOU, in the least amount of time. If it takes me 4 weeks to learn some arbitrary <INSERT NOUN HERE>.js framework to then be able to do stuff "quickly" then it better cut down development time by atleast +4 weeks to be worth it. No doubt, some amount of Yak shaving is worth it for the future (when you already have acquired a skill and no longer need to spend time learning) but in a scenario where speed of dev is important, go for technologies that you know and are comfortable with (which differs from person to person)

Only general piece of advice I would give is to use SaaS tools to do heavy lifting. Tools like Auth0, Firebase Cloud Functions and authorization, etc can save you quite a bit of time compared to the learning curve they come with. Not to mention these products have teams behind them who work round the clock to make them developer friendly, so if you can't understand and get them running quick enough then IMO the tool is flawed not the user.

arsalanb··on Ask HN: Organizing company knowledge?
I'm working on something in the same domain, and it's very interesting to speak to somebody who has approached this problem from a scientific angle. I will email you shortly with some queries, if you please.

Best of luck with the book!

arsalanb··on Ask HN: Organizing company knowledge?
I'm working on something that aims to make this easier from a more ground-up perspective, but it is many years away from when we can say this problem has been solved completely. Here's something I've learnt in the process (as gringoDan said in a comment on this tread) company culture is the fundamental requirement. The limitation with organisation tools is that they amplify your company behaviour digitally.

If your company does not prioritise a written culture, then there is no tool that can come in and magically do it for you. Your tools will only amplify this phenomena (your team will use the tools for some time, and then quickly think of it as "another thing to do" when the shine wears off and stop using them)

This is because of the way current tools are set up. I have seen companies hire interns to help keep their internal knowledge updated. Despite this, there is always some document to update. I view updating documents as work that is required to keep other (perhaps more "important") work seamless. I can draw a comparison between maintaining internal documentation and writing unit tests (both equally important, while being underrated and easily postponed for later) At scale it either compounds to a technical debt and can bring the whole company to a halt momentarily.

arsalanb··on Ask HN: Organizing company knowledge?
Could you tell us more about how your book is relevant to the topic at hand? I've tried to read up on information operations, albeit in a different context.
arsalanb··on Ask HN: Resources for catching up on modern JavaScript for Python/C++ Programmer
I'm in the same position as you. I realised I was still writing spaghetti code that relied heavily on DOM manipulation with Jquery. I am currently learning how the language has evolved and the following has been helpful —

1. https://javascript.info/

2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxAXlJEmNMg (videos, watch all of them)

3. http://jstherightway.org/

4. http://eloquentjavascript.net/

Hope this helps :)

arsalanb··on User Interface: A Personal View, Alan Kay (1989)
I did do a show Hn earlier this week, but it seemed very inefficient to put people through a page that gets them to sign up to create their own documents, I just decided to annotate documents that interest me and post them here for other like-minded people. (Believe it or not, annotating this took three days.)

Also, you're right about the chat box being annoying I will probably remove it from that page.

If there are specific tips for making the presentation more straight forward and honest, I'm all ears.

Thank you for the feedback

arsalanb··on Redemption of a Lost Prodigy
How do we get past the message that asks us to pay? I think that should be the default way of posting behind-paywall content to HN. Doesn't make sense to say "Hey, why don't you pay $12 to check out this post?"
arsalanb··on PeerTube: A decentralized video hosting network, based on free software
I don't want just me to have these videos, I want them to be on the internet for everybody to have whichever video they want. Just stashing away MY videos is a tad bit selfish but work, no doubt.

Also leaves us with no way to discover future "favorites"

arsalanb··on PeerTube: A decentralized video hosting network, based on free software
Youtube is more than just a tool, it's a store of culture almost. Imagine Youtube suddenly disappeared. A wealth of information and video would be lost, like rare videos which are only on youtube. Sure, someone somewhere will have a copy but on the whole you can't access them seamlessly like you can with Youtube.

Of late I have began to think this is too much power for a company to hold. I trust Youtube to not fuck up so bad that all videos are gone, but I would sleep a bit sounder at night if it was decentralised.

arsalanb··on Ask HN: What is your “mission” in work and life?
Currently working on something that will be the first step in this direction. In case you're interested, there's a link in my HN bio.
arsalanb··on Ask HN: What percentage of your users are using social login?
How is it "well known that a significant percentage of people won't sign up with a social login" ?
arsalanb··on Ask HN: What percentage of your users are using social login?
I built the log-in before the FB/CA situation and am yet to understand how it may change things. However, I personally think people will move on from this like nothing ever happened (which is sad)
arsalanb··on Ask HN: What is your “mission” in work and life?
My mission is to breakdown barriers and level the playing field by allowing people to leverage the huge amount of knowledge we have available today to understand the world and subsequently tinker with abstraction. I want to help people make the jump from "rookie" to somebody who understands abstraction and can look past it, as smoothly as possible.

You'd be surprised what we can do as a species if everybody could understand this huge corpus of information we already have.

arsalanb··on Ask HN: What percentage of your users are using social login?
I'm currently working on a project which has only social login (but allows you to choose between facebook and google) and this was a very deliberate move. For any given person on this planet, there is a higher chance that they use facebook or gmail over any other "service", so no need to offer support for 10 different social logins.

Also, this is more about imposing a qualitative filter on the users who sign up. If the earliest users you have don't like you enough to give you their social login details (assuming, of course, you don't do something silly that poses a security threat) then do they really like you enough?

I like to think of my earliest users as "apostles" (I even call them that. Not to their face, but yeah) and they should have a bit of faith in the service. If they don't, then they are not really apostles after all.

arsalanb··on Show HN: Tones.fm – Make synth music
I don't know the first thing about music, but this was still fun to play around with. The front end is a work of art. Looks solid and robust.

I tried it on my iPhone (in Safari) it made a sort of clicking sound with every "beat" or whatever it's called when the line passes over the circles. Other than that, looks great even on iPhone.

arsalanb··on Bill Gates – A villain who lived to see himself become a hero? (2016)
While what the comment states may be factually correct, it is unfair, in my opinion. Classic example of people sitting in their couches at home to point out everything Bill Gates did wrong in an attempt to judge him for the right he's doing.

Business is business, he did what he had to in order to see his company thrive. And now he's stepped back and wants to give back to society. Branding him as a villain who wants to buy his way into heaven is a cheap shot.

arsalanb··on Steve Wozniak announces tech education platform Woz U
Okay, there are a lot of comments here about various things but what struck out to me was that on the website it says Woz U will help students "get into the workforce quicker" but their curriculum doesn't really cover any CS. It covers things that help you build stuff using "hip" tools and languages, but not things like algorithms, data structures, etc.

My question is, is this really all it takes to get a job in a startup/tech company? Would YOU hire somebody who just knew these things?
