arran-nz··on Small German town starts testing geothermal power utilizing new techniques
To add, there's now a weekly extraction of ground water to maintain the pressure.
arran-nz··on ScreenToGif: Screen, webcam and sketchboard recorder with an integrated editor
I use this to create gifs and mp4 for game development - Absolutely killer feature set and decent encoding options.
arran-nz··on Sokoban
Hey cool, I'm building a game inspired by Sokoban where you're tasked with destroying evidence and cleaning up any trace of crime - It's called Hazard Pay.

It started as a game jam entry for Ludum Dare, but after the great feedback I decided it was simple enough to go for a full release.

arran-nz··on Ask HN: What Are You Working On? (April 2024)
I'm working on a puzzle game that started as a Ludum Dare (gamejam) submission - A demo will be out in the coming weeks.

Hazard Pay is a dark puzzler about destroying evidence and leaving no trace - With Sokoban-like mechanics, combine items in unique ways to clean up each lab and load the truck with the remains.

arran-nz··on VCard and RSS as an alternative to social media
A few years ago I made QCard to solve the problem of quickly sharing info at meetups and conferences - It's nothing but a convenience wrapper around VCard - Everything runs in the browser.

arran-nz··on Boids
Building your own Boids simulation wonderful and I can highly recommend it - It's incredible how simple it emulates life so convincingly.
arran-nz··on Ask HN: What is a quote that permanently changed the way you think?
"In the morning when thou risest unwillingly, let this thought be present,—I am rising to the work of a human being. Why then am I dissatisfied if I am going to do the things for which I exist and for which I was brought into the world? Or have I been made for this, to lie in the bed-clothes and keep myself warm?—But this is more pleasant.—Dost thou exist then to take thy pleasure, and not at all for action or exertion? Dost thou not see the little plants, the little birds, the ants, the spiders, the bees working together to put in order their several parts of the universe? And art thou unwilling to do the work of a human being, and dost thou not make haste to do that which, is according to thy nature?"
arran-nz··on Ask HN: Where do you host your own-domain email?
I've been using Tutanota for years, but now I'm looking to migrate due to the missing IMAP/POP3 Bridge, inability to easily export all emails and slow search performance - Old emails essentially become irretrievable.

arran-nz··on It's 2030, & digital wallets have replaced every card in our purses and pockets
Imagine a device that could do contactless "tap and pay" transactions, be weather resistant, virtually indestructible, fit inside a small pocket and not require a battery..

In all seriousness if the credit/debit card was introduced after smartphone wallets, we would all be moving in that direction

arran-nz··on GPS Watch? No Thanks. Top Runners Are Ditching the Data
Exactly, I hacked this together to produce GeoJSON from the Garmin Instinct.

arran-nz··on GPS Watch? No Thanks. Top Runners Are Ditching the Data
Garmin Instinct. Optional Bluetooth, stores data locally and is accessible via USB.
arran-nz··on Ask HN: How do you deal with TOTP 2-factor auth?
I use andOTP[0] which auto-exports an encrypted backup to a local folder, which is then synced with Syncthing[1] to my NAS.

It's seamless and doesn't need an internet connection.

arran-nz··on Show HN: Neucards – Privacy based digital contact card

arran-nz··on Privatizing our digital identities
No, it's not completely ignored.

> What can you do? Register your own domain and run your own SMTP server? Better make sure you renew your domain each year, else... --- You are no more. Don't have $5 per month to lease a VPS and run your SMTP server? --- You are no more. Has your domain gotten on some mail blacklists? --- You are not more.

arran-nz··on Show HN: Liftosaur – Weightlifting tracker app for coders
Yeah, for people living a de-googled life - For example, people running LineageOS or GrapheneOS.
arran-nz··on Awesome Docker Compose Examples

arran-nz··on Show HN: Liftosaur – Weightlifting tracker app for coders
Very impressive! I appreciate all the effort that has clearly gone into the documentation - I'm going to try this with the Strong Lifts program.

arran-nz··on Leaving Spotify for freer pastures
This is really inventive, great execution.

Do you have a write up or src hosted anywhere?

arran-nz··on Teflon microplastics and nanoplastics released from non-stick cookware
Absolutely agree, love cast iron.

One contra point, Titanium when hiking functions well if you're bringing a gas cooker.

However, I will never cook with Titanium over a fire again - You can literally burn soup.

arran-nz··on Tell HN: WhatsApp appears to be censoring references to Signal
Okay, this is interesting.

My WhatsApp profile has been dormant for almost 2 years. Before uninstalling the app, like you, I changed my profile picture to the Signal logo and wrote a similar about section.

My friend just checked my profile, the profile photo was shown briefly before being removed - The about section is also blank.

arran-nz··on macOS 13 Ventura review

arran-nz··on 87% of American teens own an iPhone; 88% expect an iPhone to be their next phone
I have LineageOS without any Google services, on a Asus Zenfone 8.

Recent versions of N26 work fine.

It's the perfect phone, with an aux port too!

arran-nz··on Dev snapshot: Godot 4.0 beta 2
I have been using the Beta with C#(Mono) since it's release 2 weeks ago on a VR prototype and I've found it very productive.

The rendering performance has significantly improved and there's a bunch of great new components - One new addition which was missing in 3.X is the 'Label3D' Node which enables you to render text in your environment, previously you had to project a spatial position to UI layer.

It's awesome to see Godot 4 come together.

arran-nz··on Ask HN: What is something you built but never marketed?
An easy way to share contact informative at conferences

arran-nz··on Godot 3.5
Stoked! I think I'll continue on my Godot VR Project now that Label3D and Textmesh are implemented - Text within the scene is vital for VR Debugging.
