arkitaip··on Netflix stops charging customers who never watch
“But the plans were on display…”

“On display? I eventually had to go down to the cellar to find them.”

“That’s the display department.”

“With a flashlight.”

“Ah, well, the lights had probably gone.”

“So had the stairs.”

“But look, you found the notice, didn’t you?”

“Yes,” said Arthur, “yes I did. It was on display in the bottom of a locked filing cabinet stuck in a disused lavatory with a sign on the door saying ‘Beware of the Leopard.”

arkitaip··on Ask HN: How do you brand yourself as a freelancer?
Depends on your market but generally people hate job title bingo that obfuscates what a freelancer actually does.
arkitaip··on Gitlab phished its own work-from-home staff, and 1 in 5 fell for it
That's hilarious but it also highlights that ultimately, there are no 100% inherently safe communications channels. A sufficiently motivated actor can go through extreme lengths to compromise your IT even if it means faking email, voice, letters, physical interaction.
arkitaip··on Google is now applying its coronavirus misinformation policies to personal files
This is gross and unethical but we should let them continue digging their own grave.
arkitaip··on G2A pays Factorio developer $40k over illegally obtained game keys
G2A knows very well that they are used as a money laundering device for criminals, they just don't care.

What I don't understand is why banks and other financial organizations keep retaining G2A as a customer. Surely they must have hundreds if not thousands of cases involving G2A by now.

arkitaip··on Spotify signs ‘The Joe Rogan Experience’ to an exclusive multi-year deal
People will probably mirror the podcast all over the web.
arkitaip··on Notion for everyone
Only on HN can people question the existence of an app which has 50M users. Trello might not be this month's flavor but I'll be damned if it's not one of the most useful planning tools out there.
arkitaip··on Notion for everyone
You aren't really missing much with Notion. It's over engineered and to easy to mess around with hours when you should be getting things done.
arkitaip··on Enabling E-Textile Microinteractions
We're witnessing the birth of a new category of cybernetic languages (smart gestures? tech-tactile? techtile?). Glad that Google is doing their HCI research to figure out how the tech is bounded by the human body. I imagine that at some point, you could add vibrations as another information channel to supplement sight and hearing.

How long before we see competing gesture languages? How long before there's an industry standard?

arkitaip··on US Secret Service: “Massive Fraud” Against State Unemployment Insurance Programs
Tons of countries have had a national ID system for decades and they didn't become tyrannical states. Take, for example, the Scandinavian countries; they even excel at any metric of freedom and democracy there is.
arkitaip··on Show HN: Hacker Spring – Instant blog by email, no signup required
Damn, I really like the concept of creating blog posts simply by sending email. Solves a lot of UI problems.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: What is the best way to target restaurants and small businesses?
Please understand that these companies are often promised the (tech) moon yet rarely get tech that delivers. The are not, as HN seems to think, lazy or dumb but rather short on cash, now more than ever.
arkitaip··on Our restaurants are failing. Why should food delivery apps thrive?
> Perhaps a better way to say this is: restaurants are good at being restaurants, but aren't always good at establishing an online presence.

That's the majority of all businesses. And like many similar industries, the razor thin margins don't allow restaurants to properly invest in tech.

arkitaip··on Show HN: Make your site’s pages faster than instant in one minute
I've experimented with instant.page and other similar scripts and it's almost shocking how fast page loading becomes when you are used to a (slight) page loading delay. There are a couple of drawbacks that one has to be aware of - bandwidth, altered ui behavior - but for some use cases where performance is needed and the bandwidth usage is minor, preloading scripts can be very useful.
arkitaip··on A small restaurant owner on Google, DoorDash, and Grubhub
Article and entire domain returns 403.
arkitaip··on Reddit rolls out community currencies on Ethereum
Hah! If the web and cryptos has taught us anything, this will be abused to hell with SEO content and all kinds of scummy techniques to get posts to the post. Expect allegations of mod power abuse, stolen content, shady cross subreddit "collaborations" and much more not that people can make money on their submissions.
arkitaip··on Don’t require a user to be interested twice: lessons on reducing signup friction
Federated login introduces additional friction and is confusing to many customers.
arkitaip··on AI-Powered JavaScript Completions
> We’ve trained a new deep learning model on 22 million open-source JavaScript files to ensure Kite works with your favorite libraries and frameworks like React, Vue, Angular, and Node.js.
arkitaip··on Elon Musk reopening Tesla factory despite Alameda County order
Pretty sure Musk will make a billion or two too...
arkitaip··on Ask HN: What is wrong with Google Chrome?
HN and other sites have become de facto support channels for Google products because their own support is too difficult to reach.
arkitaip··on Elliot Virtual Mall
I absolutely adore this fun and carefree design. Such a nice throwback to simpler times when the web was in its infancy and web designers were still figuring the basics of their profession.
arkitaip··on Fun Facts on Producing Minimal HTML
This is HN; missing the point is the point.
arkitaip··on Show HN: Twitch Roulette – Find and chat with streamers who are streaming alone
It really is about discoverability, though.

On Youtube, everything is about producing enticing videos and if you do a great job, the algo will favor you even if you are a small channel. Youtube search plays an important part in all of this.

On Twitch, the unit of interest is the live stream and that is much more difficult to produce content around. It also makes finding interesting streams challenging because search doesn't work well with this type of content. Heck, you can't even query the directory for basic stuff like [show me streamers living in Sweden who usually stream GTA 5 RP].

arkitaip··on Show HN: Twitch Roulette – Find and chat with streamers who are streaming alone
Please don't. I would avoid certain stream if I knew they were told that I've joined/left because I do that quite frequently without saying anything and don't want to come across as an asshole.
arkitaip··on Founders on SaaS Platforms They Use
It's not a popular opinion on HN but Microsoft really provides superior value with Office 365 [0]. Even though the quality or usability of their products aren't that great, it's good enough for most businesses, many which are too busy getting work done or just surviving rather than evaluating the latest collab/productivity darling that costs another 30-50 USD per employee.

[0] Zoho is the other alternative but even their offerings tends to become expensive once you start using more than a single app.

arkitaip··on Show HN: Twitch Roulette – Find and chat with streamers who are streaming alone
It doesn't help that most streams look identical to each other when your are browsing the directory, i.e. hundreds of thumbnails that look like screenshots of games. There is no way to tell them apart.
arkitaip··on New Zealand eliminates Covid-19
Trump and his government is already rewriting the narrative by peddling multiple inter-working conspiracies about covid-19 to deflect attention:

* If only China had provided the world with accurate data about covid-19 the US wouldn't be in this mess.

* Covid-19 was developed by the Wuhan research lab.

* China developed covid-19 as a weapon against the US.

* China is responsible for the tens of thousands of deaths in the US.

arkitaip··on WinUI – The modern native UI platform of Windows
It's crazy how popular Electron is these days. I want to say that it's become the de facto solution for creating hybrid native apps on Windows but maybe that's selection bias due to the apps that I use (dev, gaming)?
arkitaip··on What would you do if you lost your Google account?
Only Github has a MUCH better track record than Google on these matters.
arkitaip··on The weird, get-rich-quick world of dropshipping
The actual products almost never matter because they change all the time. Some only have a sales period of a few weeks. What dropshippers do is to automate data gathering and number crunching to figure out the next products to focus on.
