arkitaip··on An update to storage policies across your Google Account
Good luck. I did this earlier this year and it really helped to use saved passwords in Chrome to figure out which accounts are the most important ones.
arkitaip··on Less than half of Americans know that alcohol is a carcinogen
The alcohol industries have done an amazing job with their propaganda. Many people genuinely believe that a glass of wine every day is actually healthy for you.
arkitaip··on How to buy gifts that people actually want
You really need to do both with people you care about.

arkitaip··on Salesforce Deal to Buy Slack Expected to Be Announced Tuesday After Market Close
That's just the HN/startup echo chamber doing its thing. Out there, MS's offerings have never been stronger for small/medium businesses.

A 365 sub probably is the single most useful and valuable service most companies can get. I mean, just look at what you get for $15 per user [0].

arkitaip··on Ask HN: How to improve signal-to-noise ratio in comments?
Those seemingly tangential discussions are often what makes the comments worth reading. You bet your ass that if company A and B have a shady past, then I would rather read about that then whatever press release or PR piece that the submission links to.

The good thing about nested forum software is that you can ignore entire sub threads that you don't like.

HN has a major problem with it's comments but tangential discussion isn't it.

arkitaip··on The Persian Art of Etiquette (2016)
They were most likely very sincere because Iranians don't expect foreigners to understand the suble nuance of their culture. Don't let random noise on HN negatively color your memories of good times.

arkitaip··on Ex Valve dev on CS:GO’s codebase
Thank you, I appreciate the detailed answer.
arkitaip··on Ex Valve dev on CS:GO’s codebase
Are there any drawbacks of using a plugin centric approach? Typically there is loss of expressiveness in code, loss of performance or disconnect between core and plugin development.
arkitaip··on No excess deaths in Sweden compared to the last ten years
> Also, it is a very introverted, borderline anti social type of society.

This is just an ridiculously offensive stereotype. If you were in downtown Stockholm this weekend, you couldn't even tell there was a pandemic considering how many people there are one the streets.

arkitaip··on Super-spreading wedding demonstrates Covid-19 risk posed by holiday gatherings
So sad for your loss.
arkitaip··on Super-spreading wedding demonstrates Covid-19 risk posed by holiday gatherings
It's absolutely insane how indifferent some older people are to the risks of covid-19. Cognitive decline is a real thing but with covid-19, it's like they have lost their minds.
arkitaip··on Super-spreading wedding demonstrates Covid-19 risk posed by holiday gatherings
You can't really tell if you're in a high risk group unless you've done extensive health testing.
arkitaip··on Google Photos hooked users with free unlimited storage. Now that's changing
Not even close with social media, Telegram, WhatsApp, etc.
arkitaip··on Google Photos will end its free unlimited storage in June 2021
The android app exists but it's wonky as in sometimes the thumbnails of your photos simply won't load They are there, you just have to click on a blank thumbnail to watch the photo.

My mother is at the same age and I set up the subscription for her and she never has to think about it. Or, you could share your subscription with your mother.
arkitaip··on App lets banks lock your financed phone if you default on payment
Title is misleading. We are talking about an use case where a mobile phone bought from a bank/creditor on an installment plan can have it's features locked until payments are resumed.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: Password management strategy for non-profit school?
Reach out to 1password personally via email, they offer discounts to non-profits.
arkitaip··on Show HN: Please-unsubscribe.com – fwd emails to unsubscribe from marketing
I've gotten into the habit of spam labeling these emails, hoping they contribute to the great spam filter in the sky. This works much better than unsubscribing because most of these emails aren't even intended for me but the jerks who keep using my email address to sign up for services and aren't required to verify the email address they provided.

One thing I've realized having moved away from Gmail to fastmail, is the importance of owning your spam data as I had to train Fastmail's spam system.

arkitaip··on Turning my smartphone into a boring productivity tool
It's amazing how quickly we adapt to get around hindrance, even if that's something we created for our own benefit.

I wonder how you could get around this? Maybe a huge blacklist and deliberately messing with sites randomly to the point it become too much of an issue, e.g. making sites load very slowly; breaking css, images randomly, etc. Something like netflix's chaos monkey?

arkitaip··on A divorce in Italy destroyed my researcher career
The problem is that marriage is one of those very few relationships that's design to be all-in or not exist at all. Even signing something like a prenup is seen as incredibly suspicious. All your financial decisions have to be based on the fact that you and your partner are going to stay together til death do you part.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: How to effectively get feedback from users?
That subreddit might be your best feedback channel now that many people consider reddit as their default for product information and troubleshooting.
arkitaip··on Ask HN: What's something not possible in HTML/Web-Dev that you'd like to see?
CSS frameworks that are smart enough to only apply CSS that your site actually uses. And no, I have zero interest in compiling my own version of Bootstrap to achieve this.

A static generator in PHP that just works with shared hosting without the need for any 3rd party libraries or frameworks. Just upload, unzip and you are set.

Basic persistent key-value data storage in the browser using only HTML.

arkitaip··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
This is an amazing service that has saved my ass on several occasions. It's actually surprising how well and easy it works.
arkitaip··on Google users locked out after 15 years' use
At least Microsoft has an infinitely better reputation for customer service and product retention. I mean , when was the last time they shut down a major product?
arkitaip··on Homicide victim found in burnt-out SUV ID'd as man behind spam-email empire
