aritraghosh007··on Show HN: I built a LLM-powered Ask HN: like Perplexity, but for HN comments
Very cool application of LLMs to supercharge the HN search experience. I’m bookmarking it!
aritraghosh007··on Tell HN: AT&T is currently having an outage
Perhaps this might have been the reason https://www.webwire.com/ViewPressRel.asp?aId=318230
aritraghosh007··on Tell HN: AT&T is currently having an outage
Looks like services are now recovering gradually.
aritraghosh007··on Bitbucket Down Since >1h
Hope it’s not linked with the nationwide US cellular outage going on right now https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=39464924
aritraghosh007··on Tell HN: AT&T is currently having an outage
Looks like a bunch of US carriers are down nationwide, seems like a pretty big coincidence or a single node failure. Would be interesting to see the RCA if one does get published
aritraghosh007··on Tell HN: AT&T is currently having an outage
Downdetector confirms it here in SF https://downdetector.com/status/att/san-francisco_137/
aritraghosh007··on Bubbles
Blown away by the creativity.
aritraghosh007··on Chitra Ramkrishna, the NSE CEO who let a faceless ‘yogi’ make all key decisions
It’s not like other countries don’t have conmen, they’re not exclusive to India alone. It’s what happens to Chitra when they are caught that sets the country and it’s systems to a more progressive path.
aritraghosh007··on Some Apple engineers rewarded up to $180k in stock bonuses as incentive to stay
Having lived all my life in several packed downtown metro areas all over from Delhi, Mumbai, NYC to San Francisco, being safety aware and conscious of your surroundings is pure common sense and not just a specific city problem. Yes, the political class and municipality can absolutely do better to quell the concerns for the wealth and demand the metro area attracts as someone pointed out earlier, although that’s a tangential discussion IMO
aritraghosh007··on Some Apple engineers rewarded up to $180k in stock bonuses as incentive to stay
“Sounds like actual hell in comparison” What gives that assumption?

I have been taking the Caltrain for work in the past decade, sure it isn’t the most ideal or perfect railway system in the world debatably but it sure is the workhorse of a bustling population that doesn’t get as much praise for doing it’s job.

aritraghosh007··on Some Apple engineers rewarded up to $180k in stock bonuses as incentive to stay
The Bay Area is 6900 square miles of land and cost of living is as high as any other metro on average per square mile. London, Tokyo, New York and pretty much every other major metropolis has problems akin to the Bay Area but we never quite as frequently refer to London or Tokyo “falling apart” the way we like to attract all our collective attention to bash the Bay Area here.
aritraghosh007··on Facebook-owned sites were down
The down page shows copyright from 2020 smh
aritraghosh007··on Gitlab S-1
Curious what are some of the top features GH has which GL doesn’t?
aritraghosh007··on Tech workers swore off the Bay Area, now they’re coming back
Google and Facebook both expanded their real estate along the Embarcadero waterfront. On the retail side, Ikea made its first purchase for a retail store in SF. Construction hasn't taken a back seat in SF during the lock down. These stories often get hidden by the catchy headlines of who's shutting down offices and going fully remote.
aritraghosh007··on Ask HN: Team fun event ideas during WFH?
Airbnb Remote Experience have worked decently well for us.
aritraghosh007··on Apple targets car production by 2024, eyes ‘next level’ battery tech: sources
Much like Amazon or Google or Facebook or Apple, err. Apple's decision to enter the auto market for renewable clean energy and pledge to uphold carbon neutrality and be negative by 2030 should might as well be a welcome step here.
aritraghosh007··on Apple targets car production by 2024, eyes ‘next level’ battery tech: sources
Yet worth more than all the car makers combined! Tesla's supercharging network and battery production capabilities is a match for just a handful today
aritraghosh007··on Apple targets car production by 2024, eyes ‘next level’ battery tech: sources
The project started sometime around 2016, so going by Apple’s track record 2024 seems like a possibility. Tesla needs a competition and is slowly turning into a monopoly.
aritraghosh007··on San Francisco Apartment Rents Crater Up to 31%, Most in U.S.
SF isn't an address for close to 800,000 residents just because of tech (or work if you will). There are myriads of other factors of why anyone would choose to live close to nice beaches, a long beautiful Pacific coastline, proximity to wineries/breweries, 4 full seasons w/ unparalleled weather conditions all year round to name just a few :)
aritraghosh007··on Canada aims to ban single-use plastics by 2021
Paper/jute bags and multi-use plastics have been in circulation for quite some time now.
aritraghosh007··on Canada aims to ban single-use plastics by 2021
What justifies from keeping anyone to not implement the ban on single-use plastics right away? Is it just the loss in revenue and labor from the petrochemical industries?
aritraghosh007··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
I think the real problem (and the one that doesn't get much attention) is that the current standards for TV OS' are not as high as those set for other platforms like the web, etc. After spending the day using more superlative platforms such as a rich desktop/mobile OS, the evening experience on the TV and connected home is not quite the same and it somehow feels like a minor but a noticeable downgrade, one which is constantly improving but isn't quite there yet as marketed.
aritraghosh007··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Passively used a few others, didn’t find them compelling either to switch. Why is FireTV OS the lesser evil?
aritraghosh007··on Ask HN: What's the worst piece of software you use everyday?
Amazon Alexa and the FireTV. Been around for some time now, several iterations except that the UX hasn’t changed, quality isn’t any better than couple years ago and painful/buggy 3rd party app integrations.
aritraghosh007··on Don't close your MacBook with a cover over the camera
So Apple finally wakes up and tells us that camera covers ruin displays, why now really?
aritraghosh007··on Java Optimized Processor (2005)
Ever since the advent of Java 8, developers who had previously moved on to newer generation of programming languages are now slowly piquing their interest in Java again which is equally exciting and reassuring to see. Java has consistently ranked at the top in the TIOBE index. https://www.tiobe.com/tiobe-index/
aritraghosh007··on Palantir Announces Confidential Submission of Draft S-1
This was long overdue. Palantir has always been a darling of the valley. I often wonder how much of Palantir is actually owned by DoD and if that information would be made public after they IPO.

Edit: Looks like In-Q-Tel, the investment arm of the Central Intelligence Agency, already owns some stake in the company. [1] [https://www.nytimes.com/2020/07/06/technology/palantir-techn...]

aritraghosh007··on Uber, Postmates Agree on $2.65B All-Stock Deal
Looks like a 10% premium on their last valuation of $2.4B. [1]

aritraghosh007··on Show HN: Hacker News front page in the style of a print newspaper
Wow sitting at an outdoor dining table and just opened the link, looked like staring at an actual newspaper! Good work.
aritraghosh007··on How we got our AWS bill to around 2% of revenue
Since they are serving about 250 requests per second, Lambdas might end up being more expensive, factor in an expensive DynamoDB and that monthly AWS bill looks scary.
