aritraghosh007··on Facial Recognition Leads To False Arrest Of Black Man In Detroit
The pandemic has accelerated the use of no-touch surfaces specially at places like an airport that are more inclined to now use a face recognition security kiosk. What's not clear is the vetting process for these (albeit controversial) technologies. What if Google thinks person A is an offender but Amazon thinks otherwise. Can they be used as counter evidence? What is the gold standard for surveillance?
aritraghosh007··on Square Is Withholding Money Merchants Say They Need
It'll be interesting to see what instruments Square might actually use to "increase cash on hand by 290 percent", increasing withholding revenue doesn't seem to be enough. Debt financing following the likes of Uber and Airbnb could might as well be on the cards soon.
aritraghosh007··on Shopify goes after Amazon with new Walmart deal
Shopify clearly announced its intentions when it went ahead with Google Cloud couple years back and the bets placed are lining up pretty nicely with recent partnerships with Facebook and now Walmart. Although it also begs the question if Walmart's discontinuance of Jet.com might have prompted this deal? [1]

aritraghosh007··on “Massive DDoS attack” just T-Mobile error?
Would love to see if T-Mobile publishes an RCA later. There seems to be so many conflicting reports speculating about a DDoS attack such as this https://www.forbes.com/sites/jessedamiani/2020/06/15/t-mobil...
aritraghosh007··on Wikipedia Lost 3B Organic Search Visits to Google in 2019
Rings a bell from when the EU decided to slap a fine on GOOG for swaying away consumer traffic in favor of its own shopping platform.[1] But that was for-profit claims and authorities were swift in action whereas this case would be extremely interesting to follow from an online free speech advocacy POV.

aritraghosh007··on A Crash in the Dollar Is Coming
Somewhat true. The dollar's place as the world currency today stems from not just its stability and negligible political volatility but also the key role the US plays in keeping the world trade (most importantly oil) efficient with its gargantuan deployment of armed forces around major trade routes. There has been a significant shift in the latter policies in the last 4 years that is bound to cause some reverberations as we step into the next decade.
aritraghosh007··on New slats make the Golden Gate Bridge sound like a David Lynch movie
I'd assume that the engineers would have performed some form of stress tests for these installations that were actually meant to afford wind resistance and that the noise should have been noticed. Does anyone know how these conditions are tested in a simulated large structural engineering lab?
aritraghosh007··on Facebook Novi and Surveillance Finance
Crypto finance should be, in general, run as open source, non-profit if it really wants to bring any societal change and democratize establishments. For-profit corporations running these programs under the garb of friendly deceptive branding can at most influence a behavior which is the only real positive.

aritraghosh007··on We reduced the AWS costs of our streaming data pipeline
Back when AWS started, there would be articles about the work to master scalability and performance for the modern web but as things matured, we somehow ended up in a much larger heap of literature around AWS cost optimization.
aritraghosh007··on Want to build a side business? buy a great domain name
Reminded me of the recent corp.com story that Microsoft eventually ended up paying for to a well known domain gatherer. https://krebsonsecurity.com/2020/02/dangerous-domain-corp-co...
aritraghosh007··on Apple Reports Second Quarter Results
They already did, lower earning but higher revenue. Also, AWS topped $10B/qtr for the first time. https://s2.q4cdn.com/299287126/files/doc_financials/2020/Q1/...
aritraghosh007··on San Francisco bans credit-only stores
Uber accepts cash in many countries partly because they were also cash-first economies but it'd be only fair to allow the full spectrum of the socio-economic strata to be part of the everyday life proceedings, the very founding pillar of the modern day democracy. A person shouldn't ideally be refused service on a lawful ground, having cash or not having a card isn't a crime, yet!

aritraghosh007··on Netflix Is Now Available Around the World
I have always wondered why couldn't YouTube dominate over Netflix's territory? Mostly what NFLX has is content which makes the barrier to entry not that hard but YouTube has more publishers/creators and with a wider reach it can easily reign over this market but quite surprisingly it doesn't.
aritraghosh007··on Please petition GitHub to support HTTPS on GitHub pages
Its quite a co-incidence that I scouted for an answer for this today while I was setting up SSL for my gh-pages. As already pointed out by some comments, its not quite as simple as we think it is to have GitHub extend SSL for its pages. Its for the same reason that Tumblr doesn't allow SSL support for custom domain either. IMHO, CloudFlare is probably the simplest workaround to get SSL enabled for your gh-pages. aritraghosh007··on Large Companies Game H-1B Visa Program
One possible explanation could be that the areas with high COL are also the areas contributing higher to the overall GDP which in turn implies that there are lucrative industries with relatively better enriched workforce. FWIW, Bay Area + NYC metropolitan regions alone make up roughly 15% of the overall US GDP.
aritraghosh007··on Bitcoin is getting its own Unicode symbol
Here is the document on the proposal : http://www.unicode.org/L2/L2015/15229-bitcoin-sign.pdf
aritraghosh007··on Ask: How cheap is dynamodb?
Let me start by saying that DynamoDB is by far the most aggressively priced cloud service. It charges per throughput (read write) units assigned to a table on an hourly basis which makes it really expensive to use. On the other side, it provides supreme scalability with extremely low latency as the catalogue claims which has been true for most of our production workloads in the last 3 years that we have run with it. DDB is a great columnar store alternative.Their query API Is gradually maturing and is now way more useful to get most job done.
aritraghosh007··on Postman: a powerful HTTP client (for Chrome) to test web services
I have tried RestEasy with FF and found it to be good.
aritraghosh007··on Free static page hosting on Google App Engine in minutes
I have my personal site hosted on Google App Engine too. Must say its sleek and simple. I had evaluated a lot of other (typical) options like EC2, Dropbox(S3) and even Github pages. Nothing came close to the ease and the performance that GAE gives. Benchmarking about 10 URLs on my site, returned an a.r.t of 3.5ms aggregate on GAE vs 5.6 ms on EC2.
aritraghosh007··on Moz Dumps Amazon Web Services, Citing Expense and 'Lacking' Service
It makes total sense for a small team (whether a startup or in a large organization) to be on AWS rather than going the DIY route by renting VPS out of some datacenter and managing everything from patching to migration to troubleshooting. What most fail to realize is the fact that a complete AWS package comes at a much cheaper cost than all of the above tasks combined. It just requires one to use some smart infrastructure planning in order to keep the bills low by tuning most of the configurable services which AWS provides.
aritraghosh007··on Use SQL subqueries to count distinct 50x faster
Amazon RedShift (based on Postgres) has an approximate function that can be used to return results faster while calculating distinct values from a large table with an error approximation of +2% (http://docs.aws.amazon.com/redshift/latest/dg/r_COUNT.html). To give some perspective, we ran a test query on a RedShift table with > 900 million records to fetch unique user id's. With the approximate function applied, the results were returned in 8 seconds while it took the usual distinct query 51 seconds, ~84% faster !
aritraghosh007··on Compute Engine Load Balancing hits 1 million requests per second
They were running it for a good 7.5 minutes. I would say that $10 does sound a lot cheaper for the amount of resources utilized (200 n1-standard-1’s).I think it basically stems from the fact that GCE charges compute resources (analogous to an EC2) per 10 minutes instead of an hour (as EC2 does).
aritraghosh007··on Friends don't let friends use Eclipse
I have been using PyCharm for the past few weeks now, and boy its sleek ! However, there is another Python IDE launched recently called Spyder which looks promising too.
aritraghosh007··on CDN vs S3
You should really be using CloudFront and "NOT" S3 if you are looking for a CDN solution. There is a reason why CloudFront exists after all. S3 is a merely a drop-in storage option, consider it as a big file system residing within big fat piped data centers.
