archonis··on Tell HN: I hate your fuzzy search
That's a fair point. Personally, the search latency wouldn't bother me unless search is the primary mode of interaction in the application context.
archonis··on Tell HN: I hate your fuzzy search
Exact match results followed by fuzzy match would cover most use cases, and clear toggles would cover the remaing ones.

It boggles the mind why this particular wheel keeps getting reinvented in octoganal shapes.

archonis··on A.I. companies are recruiting electricians and carpenters by the thousands
>> have a project of massive scale

If datacenter demand doesn't evaporate, mega scale datacenters sound like the most probable candidates for this.

Don't hijack browser history like that.

Don't let your personal love of Piranha II convince you that it was a box office hit.
archonis··on Young adults are poor despite every metric which suggests otherwise
The flipside is a lot of municipalities have become a lot more aggressive about enforcement, and changing regulations (especially regarding gas and electric) and manditory inspections mean that there's less that you can get away with.
archonis··on Young adults are poor despite every metric which suggests otherwise
I feel you. My property tax has gone up more in the past decade than it did during the previous 3 decades.

Cost and necessity of permits for renovations plus re-asessment of property after renovation for tax increase means every path forward is much more expensive than it would have been in decades past.

archonis··on Young adults are poor despite every metric which suggests otherwise
Working class parents in their 20s in the USA could afford to buy their own homes well into the 2000s. Some got burned by cyclical factors, high interest, etc...; but many still achieved sustained lifetime home ownership.
archonis··on The Tower Keeps Rising
There's nothing quite like the empowerment of discoverable user interfaces devoid of dark patterns.
archonis··on My midlife crisis Corolla is fast, furious, and modded
We're talking about hot-rod culture here, which has been explicity coupled with projections of notional masculinity from its inception.
archonis··on Germany maybe found a new source of renewable energy
The inherrent dangers of nuclear energy stem from flawed actors admimistrating something which carries manageable and often avoidable risks.

Fracking as a process carries inherrent unavoidable risk.

archonis··on The Tower Keeps Rising
Indeed. This is an awkward era where we're using these artificial language tools to target abstractions made for humans to manually write.

At some point the path from human language to machine code is not going to require an interstitial step writing to higher level languages as we know them.

2026 is an election year for the Governor. One year moratorium conveniently allows the incumbent to have cake and eat it too.

archonis··on Storm clouds gather over America's financial supremacy
>> Smartphones in dumb pockets made it all possible.

>>> Smartphones did nothing. The "people" who manipulated the reality within them did.

So those manipulations and their machinations weren't enabled by the existance of smarphones?

archonis··on Storm clouds gather over America's financial supremacy
Apple certainly played a major part.

The long distance culture war was enabled by long distance visibility.

The whole 'own the libs' thing wouldn't have existed in an era where everybody wasn't paticipating in a medium that made non-local people extremely visible to one another.

archonis··on Storm clouds gather over America's financial supremacy
Smartphones in dumb pockets made it all possible.

I wonder if rural farm town to Miami is the real story here vs. any sort of national culture clash.
archonis··on After 7 years in production, Scarf has reluctantly moved away from Haskell
At some point, (programming) languages themselves will become vestigal abstractions.
archonis··on How the terrorist group Boko Haram uses frontier AI
Well said. As mentioned in another post, it's not about intelligence, it's about vulnerability. One particular type of misery is mourning, and the western world does a pretty good job of creating mourners in a number of places where terrorist groups flourish.
archonis··on How the terrorist group Boko Haram uses frontier AI
Terrorists organizations are members of high control (ie. cult) groups.

High control groups succeed because they apply their tactics to people who at vulnerable. Vulnerability has no correlation with intelligence. Lots of intelligent people are exploited by high control groups because they are recruited at a time when they are vulnerable.

I wonder if Metroloft cut corners on structural engineering practices given that they also exploit non-union workers.

How did you come to that conclusion?

archonis··on The best response to AI slop and online noise is from Robin Williams
You're talking about acting vs. lived experience. That doesn't invalidate the premise of the article, it actually strengthens it if you aren't overly pedantic in your read and interpretation.
archonis··on Dostoyevsky isn't difficult
Sometime in the 90s we started getting really good Dostoyevsky translations, and they make a huge difference.
