archarios··on An illustrated guide to plastic straws (2021)
Ideally, we would have funding for chemical recycling of plastics which would make a circular plastic economy. I don't know if this is actually a viable solution at scale but it's the dream.
archarios··on Ask HN: How to raise funds for rare disease research?
I don't have any expertise that can help here, but I want to chime in and say I feel you. My partner has a rare genetic disorder as well that has put them in the hospital many times in the past few years. We have been VERY lucky because a new drug that treats their condition fairly well was approved by the FDA just MONTHS before my partner started experiencing symptoms (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Givosiran if you're interested). It's an extremely expensive medicine. Fortunately our insurance covers it! Best of luck to you and your family.

PS: I'm actually going to try apply to work for AllStripes soon.. Wish me luck!

archarios··on Kinesis Advantage 360
if the layer button is easily accessible, it isn't so bad imo. I have a function layer available just by moving my thumbs one button "inward" from resting position and I love it. It seems I like layers more than a lot of people though so *shrug.
archarios··on Kinesis Advantage 360
There's a function layer. So you can still hit the function keys, just have to hit another button first.
archarios··on Kinesis Advantage 360
I think they want to keep it somewhat approachable..

you could also build your own at much lower cost but much higher labor: https://github.com/abstracthat/dactyl-manuform https://www.etsy.com/market/dactyl_manuform
archarios··on Kinesis Advantage 360
looks like there is a function layer. Layers are nice because they make it so you don't have to move your hands far from home row.

I put mine further out
archarios··on Ask HN: What if you hate web development?
Yeah that isn't completely false. However, frontend work is SO much better than it used to be. Having to support old versions of IE made everything suck for a while. We won't have to worry at all about IE at all soon: https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/lifecycle/announcements/int.... That said, the testing story for frontend isn't as good as it could be. Cypress has gotten us really close to a place where frontend testing can have really good coverage. But it's not quite there yet IMO. All things considered, with a modern web stack, I think fullstack work is overall less stressful because web frameworks make it so you don't have to make big architecture decisions that you may deeply regret down the line. I do miss making those decisions because they are fun to think about, but having to make those decisions is a huge liability and source of stress IMO.
archarios··on Ask HN: What if you hate web development?
I'd recommend not entirely dismissing web work as an option. If you do web work, there will be so many more jobs available to you. The work may not be as exciting in some cases. However, it is still good, well paying, work. The work may be less stimulating overall, but I think it's also less stressful. Which gives me more energy for other things in my life that I value more. There's more to life than work.
archarios··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
In my experience, you hypothesis is wrong.
archarios··on 100 years of whatever this will be
Sears mostly collapsed because they decided to make their internal departments independent competing companies. The departments acted more in their own interests rather than in the interests of the whole company...
archarios··on 100 years of whatever this will be
I wonder if the growth problems that SU came across was more due to external pressures than inherent systemic limitations of a planned economy
archarios··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
Mechanical != loud.
archarios··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
But.. they are objectively superior. Not everyone needs them. But they are better in many ways.
archarios··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
You don't seem to understand that you don't need to bottom out your switches to actuate them. I have Kailh Copper switches which barely require me to push them down very far in order to actuate. Also they're pretty quiet. You can have your preferences, but blanketly saying that all mech keyboards "require too much strength" and are "loud" is wrong. The "expensive" part isn't even true in all cases.
archarios··on Why Are Topre Keyboards So Expensive?
I haven't had that experience but I came into the hobby after going to an in-person keyboard meetup that helped me to learn the basics.
archarios··on Eight million Britons unable to buy essential food items in last fortnight
Trump was a fucking disaster and the idea that he had much of anything to do with the economy doing well during that time is pretty childish
archarios··on Facebook Political Problems
Zucc has, time and time again, chosen profit over people. Facebook over country. They knew what they were doing (spreading misinformation, creating political division, harming childrens' mental health) and actively chose to not do anything about it. If no private entity can be trusted to do better than that, maybe facebook shouldn't be a private entity IMO.
archarios··on California population declines for first time in more than a century
I don't think we'll really see housing prices drop until the ocean rises up far enough to ruin our cities.
archarios··on Toolz: A functional standard library for Python
Hell yeah me too! Some of my coworkers like it, but there are a few out there who basically don't want to learn something new.. I have been using Ramda professionally for about two years now and I love the heck out of it. My org is using more and more TypeScript which makes using Ramda a little harder but it still works pretty well in this context too. I have been working on a test data inventory project with Ramda recently and it has made the implementation so much nicer than it would have been otherwise. I started using pipeP (by defining it with pipeWith) and omg it's so great for dealing with a mix of async and non async calls.
archarios··on Ask HN: What are you working on?
Could it also estimate CO2 output from delivery? I always try to buy local even if it's online when possible. Luckily this is usually possible in the bay area/California :)
archarios··on Hell Yes CSS
I guess the trickiest thing still is some layout stuff that isn't covered by ^ and usually when I'm dealing with that kind of stuff I use https://learnlayout.com/ as a reference
archarios··on Hell Yes CSS
Yo, with Flexbox and CSS grid frontend styling is liek nbd anymore. I've been doing frontend for a while now tho so I might be biased..
archarios··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (December 2020)
I applied to this job last month and the application status is "Not Selected" in the dashboard. I think I'd be a good fit for the position! I'm willing to negotiate on salary or whatever else may have been an issue.
archarios··on Is carbon capture a viable solution?
Implying people can't intellectually affect people other than their own children.
archarios··on Next.js 10
Wow, holy hell. I hope I never have to work with you.
archarios··on Next.js 10
*laughs in modern web development
archarios··on Next.js 10
When you're working on a larger scale (be that app complexity or number of users) these things make more sense.
