arch_hunter··on North Carolina House passes bill banning community fiber infrastructure
If you are in North Carolina you can call or email your Senators and encourage them to vote against the bill.

arch_hunter··on HTTP Status 418 I'm a teapot
I think that he means that he is putting everything on the private IP range: 192.168.* .* .
arch_hunter··on The dangers of unlicensed engineering
This is sounding a lot like a profession making it illegal for others to do anything that could decrease their own income.
arch_hunter··on For 18 minutes, China hijacked 15 percent of the world’s Internet traffic
From my understanding, one of the main reasons that internet is so slow in China is because everything has to pass through the Great Fire Wall.
arch_hunter··on Chinese Gov.'s biography of Liu Xiobao, dissident and recent Nobel Prize winner
I found it interesting that this biography is so different than the ones that have been written in Western news recently. Can anyone here speak to how accurate it might be?
arch_hunter··on Web traffic redirected to China still a mystery
Possibly. Or somebody could be using servers in China in a "man-in-the-middle" attack to get information while it is en-route.
arch_hunter··on Ask HN: I want to start a clothing company.
What did you mean that Chinese to say? because it came out along the lines of "at China's stuff."
arch_hunter··on Extremist group tries to game Digg
I may be completely off-base, but after reading the article and poking around a bit I got the impression that most in the DP group are youngish (under 21) and just wanting to be part of a secret society that does something 'useful.'

Most of the conspiracy theory nuts I know (I know a couple) are just kids who something big to happen, and so they make up a conspiracy so that they can be part of it.

arch_hunter··on Ask HN: Help us create a startup in the gaming space
Or let me play Dwarf Fortress in the cloud so that I will actually be able to play the new version at a reasonable speed.
arch_hunter··on How We Beat the Nazis with Bureaucracy
I do not believe that the committee has proper authority to approve posting here, we should refer all comments to PG and let him decide whether or not to approve each post.
arch_hunter··on If Microsoft goes Google
If Microsoft ever does 'Go Google' I'll eat my hat: That would be like Bluto deciding to eat spinach to gain Popeye's strength, it just won't happen.
arch_hunter··on Safest Seat on a Plane
They say that the seats in the back are more safe, presumably because fewer people die in them, but are not the seats in the back usually only filled if the plane is full? The plane would have to be somewhat full in order for someone in the back of the plane to die in a crash. I am not saying that their data is completely wrong, as I am not sure what their methodology was, but it is at least suspect.
arch_hunter··on Incredibly low-priced private schools
Even most private schools in America charge less per pupil than the government pays to educate a student in a public school. Governments are rarely efficient because they do not have to be.
arch_hunter··on Thursday = Thor's day
> It beg's the question "Why do I reject those other 529 gods?" Generally there is no good answer for this other than being indoctrinated at a young age.

But that does not explain people who switch religions later in life.

For myself, I decided that I could not be atheist after encountering spirits. My encounters with spirits disproved atheism for me, instead I am currently a Christian because that is the only religion that is able to accurately describe my spiritual encounters. Atheism as a worldview denies that spirits exist, therefore in my mind it can not possibly be accurate.

arch_hunter··on Another view of game piracy
I think that you mean it is virtually impossible to buy non-pirated games. The same goes for movies here: There are lots of them everywhere, but they are all pirated.
arch_hunter··on HP Updates MacBook-Imitating Envy Range
I'm sorry, but I do not see how that is a copy of a MacBook. I have seen a lot of laptops that look more similar to that than that looks to a MacBook.
arch_hunter··on Don't drink the water in Boston without boiling it first.
Traditionally China has been the same way: Whenever somebody gives you a glass of water it is always warm so that the receiver knows that it has been boiled, and is safe to drink. It often takes foreigners a while to adjust.
arch_hunter··on A Note to Google Users on Net Neutrality, by Eric Schmidt (2006)
Knowing a little about how the process works, you usually do not get to speak to that actual congressman, but instead one of their staff workers who does their best to sound sympathetic without committing to anything.
arch_hunter··on Why Desktop Linux (Still) Sucks. And What We Can Do To Fix It.
You should really try Arch. I was initially hesitant, because of the whole 'Build you own Linux!' thing, but after doing it once I learned LOTS and realized that it was not near as difficult as it sounds.

There is excellent documentation in the Arch wiki, and the forums are helpful. And I have to say, installing arch linux taught me more about linux than anything else that I have ever done.

arch_hunter··on What if you had bought Apple stock instead of that iPod?
Considering all of those, you might as well also include capital gains tax.
arch_hunter··on What if you had bought Apple stock instead of that iPod?
You may want to unlaod those iPads sometime soon. As soon as Apple announces the next generation they are going to go down significantly in value.
arch_hunter··on Goldman executives cheered housing market's decline, newly released e-mails show
Yes, and then the government 'has' to do something to 'correct' the market's own correction.
arch_hunter··on Apple closes the revenue, income gap with Microsoft to just $1 billion
I am sure that I do not like this future.
arch_hunter··on Microsoft throws its weight behind Web Open Font format
Embrace, Extend, Extinguish.
arch_hunter··on Why Texas is doing so much better economically than the rest of the nation
California's or Texas's?
arch_hunter··on How to Make a Tiny Terrarium in a Light Bulb
That sounds like fun!

Did you fill the lightbulb with water afterwards, and let the ship float in the water, or did you make some kind of stand inside of the lightbulb?

arch_hunter··on How to Make a Tiny Terrarium in a Light Bulb
I wonder how a small cactus would do in a terrarium of this size? They shouldn't need much in the way of water.
arch_hunter··on JooJoo Tablet Is a Real Piece of DooDoo
I read Wired for their in-depth articles about cool things. I have recently stopped reading most of their articles reviewing Apple products and sports cars as I find most of them to be border-line fanboyish and contain very little infromation that I could not find elsewhere without the fanboy tint.
arch_hunter··on Copyright and wrong: Why the rules on copyright need to return to their roots
I very much agree with this article, copyright terms have become way, way too long, and are very close to no longer being the 'limited time' that the constitution requires. Another good read on the matter is http://besser.tsoa.nyu.edu/howard/papers/copyright99.html .
arch_hunter··on Mona Lisa heist of 1911 concealed a perfect—and far more lucrative—crime
There was a British TV series that I watched some of a while back about a group of con artists (sorry, I can not remember the name right now). Several of the episodes had this same plot: the group of con artists would steal some valuable antique, and then sell forgaries of it, before returning it as part of a plea bargan.
