arb99··on It's OK not to use tools
this is hacker news. and this post is questioning if its worth the effort to copy navigation to 8 pages. surely the obvious answer is to just include header/footer files (e.g. simple example in php: <? include('header.php');?>).

this way will just increase cost for his/her client down the road. Use even a super simple templating system (even if it is just including header/footer).

sure, using WP is overkill. but this is just silly to have actual plain .html files...

plus in a url http://example.com/about-us.html doesn't look as nice as http://example.com/about-us

(something like mod_rewrite could fix this, but if he/she is copy/pasting headers/footers i doubt that would be implemented...)

arb99··on Google ruling 'astonishing', says Wikipedia founder Wales
If it ends up removing the whole page for any query:

Got a competitor out ranking you with a page that has comments? Write some personal details, get it approved... then request that page removed.

But it'll probably just stop it from showing up for that persons name (and related queries).

arb99··on Google Has Most of My Email Because It Has All of Yours
Same with Google Analytics.

GA is the standard analytics for a huge % of websites - so even if a website doesn't use GA for tracking traffic, Google still has the referral data. And things like Google Adsense (i'm pretty sure that sends back the referral data too, for tracking click fraud).

There is no way really to avoid Google knowing a lot about you/your website anymore.

arb99··on Show HN: Google Privacy Enhancer – "smoke bombs" your search history
Google deff pays more attention to not just what you search for, but also what you click on. A search (without an infobox thing) that is abandoned indicates to google you're not really that interested in that action...

arb99··on Show HN: Textter, Live letter-by-letter messaging for iOS
Not trying to be negative here, the app looks cool, but "The World's First Live Messaging System" - no its not.

And patent pending? I remember ICQ, there have been other services mentioned, and I'm sure 100's if not 1000's of other applications in the past have done this so called 'live messaging'... so good luck with the patent ;)

There is even a wikipedia page on it http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Real-time_text

arb99··on Minecraft Griefers Demolish 1:1 scale model of Denmark
Surely whatever program they used to create it could just be run again. It used data from maps etc so it must be able to run the same input again. Although if its >1tb of data thats gonna take a while...
arb99··on Show HN: A socially curated startup job board
yeah, it doesn't even resemble reddit. Just has some kind of voting.
arb99··on Show HN: Gandalf – $1 private Docker registries
Good luck using something called 'Gandalf'..
arb99··on 4chan source code leaked (2010)
a few lines down:

  system("openssl rand 448 > '".SALTFILE."'",$err);
                if ($err === 0) {
                    chmod(SALTFILE,0400);
                    $salt = file_get_contents(SALTFILE);
                }
arb99··on Using Dnsmasq for local development on OS X
yeah thats what i meant and said.

by using something to edit the hosts file you'd have to edit it every time (can't do wildcards on hosts file, so it needs editing every time)

arb99··on Using Dnsmasq for local development on OS X
Doesn't do the exact same (you'd have to add a new entry everytime, rather than point *.dev to localhost) but https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/hostadmin/ is easier to set up. It'll flush the dns cache everytime its changed.
arb99··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
I think Waze gets its data from other users, but in the uk we have https://www.mysupermarket.co.uk/ which will tell you the cheapest online grocery shopping company to go with for your selected 'trolly' (basket). (it compares tesco, sainsbury's, asda etc)
arb99··on Ask HN: Idea Sunday
so a mix between couchsurfing.org and airbnb.com?
arb99··on Stock Photos That Don’t Suck
sxc.hu which recently changed to http://www.freeimages.com/ has a decentish collection. been using it for years when quality isn't too important.

but i tend to use photodune.com for anything a bit more serious, the images vary from $1 to $5, and they have many to choose from. But if they don't have anything good enough then its over to istockphoto.

of course there is also the getty embed thing they announced a while ago (http://www.gettyimages.com/Creative/Frontdoor/embed) which might be handy if you just want small blog content.

This looks really cool and something that will be fun to play with.

jetpac looks interesting too.

Any idea why they released this framework?

arb99··on “Netflix for Legos” is an awesome idea. But can it scale?
It is a kids toy. They see it in a kids toy shop and want to buy it. There are already non lego bricks but every kid knows they're not as good, never work properly.

Plus no matter how great 3d printers become, the bricks would still need designing, and making sure they have the exact fit on each other like lego bricks always do.

lego won't be killed off by 3d printing.

arb99··on Out of 15M brackets, none remains to win Warren Buffet's $1B March Madness bet
I agree with you, but he is hardly unknown. (Not sure if that was sarcastic?)

arb99··on Most Expensive Tweet Ever Sends $11,000 To Kenyan Water Charity Via Dogecoin
Unrelated to the story (only to the title) but I bet a sponsored tweet from some big celeb could cost more than that.

arb99··on A competitor emailed me moments after I signed up to Stripe
As sanswork said have you asked them where they got your details from? It could just be a coincidence.

Or, when you said you 'played around with the [stripe] service' did you put any stripe code on public sites?

arb99··on Why Indie Developers Go Insane
I think this is the real reason. And as well he announced it was going to be deleted in 24hrs... giving people final chance to buy it... if he really did want to stop it he would have pulled it straight away (I am assume the app stores let you do this - I don't know). He's milking it for what he can be being cautious. I don't blame him.

arb99··on How We Discovered the Underground Chinese App Market
>Then we came across KuaiYong (aka 7659.com), an app market that allows users to install iOS apps without even jailbreaking their phone.

How is that possible? Do the chinese markets use different iphone exploits than western ones when it comes to iphones?

On 7659.com, after google translate it says:

>Prompted to enter your Apple ID case solutions Installed applications prompt "Enter the Apple ID bomb box" or "flash back", you can use the top right corner of the "flash back (bullet box) Repair" resolved. If the repair is not successful, please update to the latest version of this application. Since this month Apple service adjustments, it is recommended not to use the recent Apple ID or appstore, to reduce repair frequency. On the phone or iPad directly fix "bomb box", "flash back" of the upcoming release of new features, so stay tuned.

Found some info about it:

http://9to5mac.com/2013/04/19/chinese-pirates-create-web-bas...

> KuaiYong used a bulk enterprise licence to get around the safeguards designed to protect apps from being pirated. The new website, 7659.com, is essentially just a front end to the app: downloading any iOS software from the site will download and install the KuaiYong app if it isn’t already installed.

arb99··on Romance website Match.com sued for $1.5 billion over 'unauthorized' photos
Some of the dating sites do worse than just steal pics. They hire cheap labor (3rd world) and using fake accounts send fake replies to guys (paying members). All under a ToS saying it is for entertainment purposes only.

Match will just claim it was spammers and scammers, not done by match.com's in house team.

There are companies set up out there that will populate a dating site with fake profiles. (I don't know their urls, but seen them before)

I think there was also a UK documentary on scammy UK dating sites, on tv a little while ago. All using fake profiles of course.

arb99··on Page not found
Honest question - do most people not know who he is? I thought he was known worldwide. I think he has had quite a few cameos/(very) small parts in films/tv as well.
arb99··on Why I won't get a Google+ Custom URL
The domains are still worth a lot though.
