araxhiel··on Is there a better browser than Firefox?
Well, as a Firefox user, I surely could sound very biased, but as for my main browser FF is still the best.

Surely there are great options, depending your needs, for example Ungoogled Chromium or Brave Browser, if you're looking for something that gives a Chrome-like experience, but without all the data gathering from Google (Ungoogled Chromium) or with some privacy-minded features already integrated (Brave).

There's also Waterfox, which is a Firefox fork (I can be wrong with this description! But that is how I understand it) that is still compatible with the old addons (XUL). There's also another project on GitLab named LibreWolf that it will be (or already is) a Firefox fork that (based on the Librefox project), in a similar fashion to Ungoogled Chromium), it has removed several mozilla-only features such as the integrated telemetry, and I think that also the "studies" feature. It also attempts to integrate some privacy-minded features in a similar way that Brave browser do. As the last time that I checked the project, they already have created some builds for Linux. I'm not quite sure if they have started to work on OSx/Windows builds.

I don't know which are your parameters to determine which browser could be better than Firefox, but it could help to take a look at those (and perhaps other) projects, use them for a while, and see which of them suits better for you.

araxhiel··on What Makes .NET Core So Special?
I would like to learn Kotlin, but I've no prior knowledge about Java... That's a real impediment?

If it isn't, do you know (by chance) about some resource(s) for a total newbie/newcomer to the language?

thanks in advance.

araxhiel··on Ask HN: What do you have on your desk?
The usual

- Laptop

- Monitor

- Keyboard

- Mouse

- Docking Station

- Desk Trays (with several documents)

- Phone

- A little Lion (made of clay, I guess) that serves as reminder about why I do what I do (see that The Simpsons episode about Maggie's missing photos)

Besides that, as I have enough free space I also have mi backpack placed near the telephone. Oh! And also my cellphone.

araxhiel··on Ask HN: Encrypted messaging still sucks on multi platforms
Although I haven't used it as IM (I'm still toying with it), I'm on the understanding that Keybase had a functionality that allows encrypted chats, and groups ("teams") too. Also, it allows you to use your own PGP key.

Maybe you want to check it out to see if it fits your requirements/needs.

araxhiel··on Ask HN: Consider 25yo for senior dev position
Well, I think that it's easier say something than do it.

If he has been developing so many years, why instead believe in his words why don't test him doing a more technical (hands-on) oriented interview instead a "normal" (talking and such) interview?

Well, IMHO, I think that in such scenario he can shine or fail according if he's saying the truth.

araxhiel··on [dead]
Not friends, but co-workers...

They use to sing a couple of lines of some "trending" songs (of certain "musical genre" from Puerto Rico that dislike so much...) over and over again. Multiple times a day. So annoying.

Also, one of them (actually the other "IT guy") when someone makes a joke on him, or simply that person doesn't do/say whatever he wants he says "so, you're wanting to die?". Even if it's a kind of (sick) "joke"... That is annoying as you can imagine.

Fortunately, the few friends I have aren't that annoying, actually I had found that their "humor" (black) and their sarcasm are traits of them that I like.

araxhiel··on How to start believing in God?
My two cents...

Why not start by investigating some religions first, in order to find those whose values, dogmas, rules, etc., align with your own set of values? I guess that it can be easier to make the "switch" if there are something to adopt as own, or to feel identified.

As example, I could use myself: I'm also an atheist, but, some years ago I was very interested in the mythology of the Scandinavian region (as, you know, there are some "revival movement" around the Heathen/Odinist religion — I can be wrong in the "labels", sorry in advance for that) and somehow I got into a group of people who were trying to follow those "religious beliefs", more important, I felt identified with most of the ideas of those beliefs... So, in resume, thanks for that feeling, I almost start to believe on such divinities (albeit not in the same sense of the Abrahamic religions)... But I guess that my lack of conviction on believe in such things is so hardwired that eventually I left that path and continued my life as an atheist.

araxhiel··on Ask HN: Why are we people mad at Ashley Madison and not the hackers?
The analogy of a victim of rape, though crude, is quite right (and left me quite impressed, to be honest).
