aranw··on Show HN: I scrape Steam data every month and it's yours to download for free
Nice! It would be nice however to see more detail about the data you collect and what exactly you provide on top of it using AI or through aggregation etc
aranw··on Siren Call of SQLite on the Server
I'm curious what SQlite package do you use? Are you also using cgo or not? cgo has been a bit of pain point for me in the past with SQLite
aranw··on Searchcode.com's SQLite database is probably 6 terabytes bigger than yours
> I couldn't quite figure out if it was safe for concurrent use

This has been a big issue I have found when researching SQLite and trying to determine if it's suitable. I can't figure out the right way to do certain stuff or docs are difficult/outdated etc in end I always end up defaulting back to Postgres

aranw··on Apple's Best Option: Decentralize iCloud
Hopefully the first thing Apple do is refuse. The second I think needs to be some way to decentralise the system. Spreading Apple iCloud backups either with different providers or self-hosted will make it difficult to surveil anyone making it all pointless to try force Apple to add a backdoor
aranw··on Teen on Musk's DOGE team graduated from 'The Com'
I don't really understand how this is an audit? Shutting down departments, getting root access to systems, read/write access to codebases these are hardly the actions of auditors doing a audit. Does a audit really require this level of access?
aranw··on Mistakes engineers make in large established codebases
I don't like this philosophy as it often leads to stagnation in patterns and ways of working that seep into newer systems. "That's not how we do things here" becomes a common criticism, resulting in systems and services that share the same flaws and trade-offs, making progress difficult.

Engineers often adhere too rigidly to these principles rather than taking a pragmatic approach that balances existing practices with future improvements.

aranw··on Telegram as an Independent Intelligence Agency
I would happily switch to an alternative if they were good alternatives.

The user experience on Telegram is amazing, the responsiveness, messages arrive instantly on all devices, the apps are feature rich and just work

Nothing can compete to how good it is

I'm perhaps lucky in that I don't need the security and privacy of a service like Signal

aranw··on Rustgo: Calling Rust from Go with near-zero overhead (2017)
The benefit isn't necessarily for speed there are some libraries for example available in Rust that are not in Go. This is something I am exploring at the moment rather than having to totally rewrite the library in Go
aranw··on A better merge workflow with Jujutsu
I really like the idea of Jujutsu and was really keen to try it out but when I looked at it several months back I found it really hard to get going with it and ended up just ditching it. This article looks to be a explanation to some of the concepts of `jj` and how to use it in a little more depth than some of the other tutorials I have seen out there. Definitely keen to give it another try at some point
aranw··on Microfeatures I love in blogs and personal websites
I like the second and third date but I think the first is perhaps a little confusing to me without this context. If I didn't know this is what it meant I'd of thought they'd be some bug in your blog or you forgot to update the url
aranw··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
Doesn't Google live and breath domains? They index the internet and have Google Cloud Platform so surely Domains should be part of Google's core businesses?
aranw··on Google to shut down Google One VPN on June 20
To be honest I don't think anyone will really care too much about Google killing a VPN product there's probably companies out there better suited to offer this as a service. I think the one that still bothers me and I think was a big mistake considering there cloud computing platform was Google Domains. Wasn't that profitable product and perfectly suited to be fully integrated into GCP?

Edit: As someone else has stated it's good that they try things and try different products and I think it's good that they shutdown products that they are not good at running

aranw··on DuckDB 1.0.0
I've been wanting to explore using DuckDB for in-process aggregation and windowing in stream processing with Golang, as I think it would be a great solution.

Curious if anyone else is using DuckDB for something similar? Does anyone have an example?

aranw··on Taking Risk
I always wondered if it has something to do with employee protections, maybe the risk of starting a business in the US feels the same as joining a company as an employee with no protection and employee rights? Although I know that has changed a lot last few years and you now need to put 2 years in a UK company to get some employee right and protections

I've always been scared and worried to go off and do my own thing without something to fall back on. I have ideas and things I'd like to build but the risk seems really high. I end up asking myself questions like "how do I pay my mortgage?", "what do I do for food?", and so on...

What can be done to make it easier to start a company in the UK?

aranw··on Fly.io Infra log: week-by-week record of what the team does
But what if they are just used as internal updates? Surely you share updates with what you've done in some way?
aranw··on Fly.io Infra log: week-by-week record of what the team does
For you the second half probably doesn't make much sense but if these documents are also shared internally it would be really useful for others at the company to see what the team and individuals have been up too
aranw··on Multi-tenant queues in Postgres
Thanks for this write up. Really interesting I've built queues using Postgres before but never anything this complex so I'm sure this article will come in use and be handy in future!
aranw··on Meta outage
Instagram has stopped working for me and I've also noticed other sites having issues like YouTube?
aranw··on Nuke: A memory arena implementation for Go
Be really interested to know and understand when and how to use these in real workloads
aranw··on Testcontainers
I've been using Docker containers for integration testing for last few years. I usually roll my own custom solution in Go using the https://github.com/ory/dockertest package though that adds necessary functionality around running migrations, creating kafka topics, or similar. Will definitely need to check out this next time I'm writing a test package
aranw··on Show HN: AboutIdeasNow – search /about, /ideas, /now pages of 7k+ personal sites
Oh nice I really like that. Ace definitely will add one to my site!
aranw··on Continuous integration with go and GitHub Actions
Is this perhaps related to private modules?
aranw··on Continuous integration with go and GitHub Actions
Recently wrote about setting up continuous integration with go and github actions be great to have some feedback. I'm trying to write more this year about the stuff I've done and work on
aranw··on Infinite Craft
I've some how managed to get down an infinite variation of "Ant-..."

One of the more interesting ones is "Ant-smoke"?

Edit: Another interesting one is combing "Batman" and "Robin" to make "Dynamic Duo"

Edit 2: I've now managed to turn the game into a number generator and by combining numbers together I've ended up creating some very large numbers. Doesn't seem to be a limit to the size either

aranw··on UK 2022 rail station flow images
Even when you download the repo the images don't render
aranw··on Flexport is laying off 20% of its workforce
Flexport were advertising for roles on HN a few months ago. I'm sure they come up regularly for roles?
aranw··on Control Center on macOS is always re-rendering its SwiftUI causing 1% CPU load
The fix will be ready for the next macOS Apple Event so that they can claim battery performance improvements
aranw··on Using enums to represent state in Rust
I really like enums in Rust. It's one of the features that makes me want to use it. I kind of wish Go had Rust like enums built into the language
aranw··on Repeat after me: building any new homes reduces housing costs for all
I don't know if it's just me but for some strange reason I can never get past the captcha on archive.ph. It just refreshes the page and I can never access the archived version
aranw··on FindMyCat – Open-Source Pet Tracker
I find it sometimes genuinely upsetting to see the negativity in some comments. Different views are cool and for some people something might seem more obvious to them than to others, but there's a way to share without tearing down. Constructive feedback is one thing but no need to be negative for the sake of being negative
