ar_turnbull··on Why Some Teams Are Smarter Than Others
Divided responsibilities among team members, but each individual with the ability to understand the other — which actually returns us to the "theory of mind" that the article refers to.
ar_turnbull··on What Doesn't Seem Like Work?
It may not be the most lucrative business for the person who loves hiking, but somebody has to write the guidebook.
ar_turnbull··on Dark Sky has a new owner
Would love to see Dark Sky in Canada. Hopefully the new owners make that a priority :-)
ar_turnbull··on I want siri on my Macbook
I'd rather have a more functional Spotlight out of the box, but Flashlight and Alfred fill that hole nicely.

(actually I'd love to have a text-input Siri on my phone)

ar_turnbull··on Google got it wrong. The open-office trend is destroying the workplace
Anyone have good tips for surviving in an open office? There are the obvious ones like noise-cancelling headphones — but are there any other good hacks for making an open space at least somewhat tolerable?
ar_turnbull··on Ask HN: What Should I do with my time
To the OP: I know this isn't the kind of answer you were looking for, but it will probably be the most rewarding — just in ways you hadn't imagined.

You're going to get paid to learn on your first job, and you'll get an idea of what you want to learn next from that experience. Go learn about life for now because like gobengo said, you won't get another chance to drop everything and travel for six months for awhile.

ar_turnbull··on How much conversation is actually taking place on social media?
Hey HN, we're a pre-launch startup (http://www.hellowulu.com) that would love to hear your thoughts on the state of conversation online. Are you having real conversations on Twitter/Facebook/etc?
ar_turnbull··on A beginner's guide to funemployment
I think the biggest thing was that they learned they could do it. There's a huge boost in confidence when you can pull off something like that. One is considering quitting his cushy office job and becoming a carpenter. He doesn't feel like he needs the safety net anymore.

That was my take on the original article too — it's important to have personal goals. That might be "getting to gold in SC2" but it could also be "survive a solo backpacking trip". The point is there's more too life than working.

ar_turnbull··on A beginner's guide to funemployment
That sounds like an incredible experience. I live in Calgary, so the Rockies are never far. =)
ar_turnbull··on A beginner's guide to funemployment
Taking five months off and playing Starcraft is great if that's what you really want to do, but I feel like the topic of "funemployment" would be better served by people really thinking about what they want to do with their free time.

For example, I have some friends who took a summer off and biked from Saskatchewan (Canada), through the Rockies, and down to California. It changed their lives.

Personally, I've always wanted to take a month to backpack and explore in the Rockies — instead of a four day weekend here and there.

ar_turnbull··on Show HN: We put an iPhone on the front wheel of a car
A roller coaster might be a good experiment if you're looking for an extreme environment that might appeal to more of a mass market. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_roller_coaster_rankings) Maybe skydiving or bungee jumping?

Or you could go a different direction and attach a phone to a cat. I hear people love videos with cats ;)

ar_turnbull··on Scoop: A Glimpse Into the NYTimes CMS
It's also relevant to the NYT's goal of surviving the digital shift. Giving the world a peek under the hood isn't just an interesting story, it's brand-building for a publication that wants to be seen as modern.
ar_turnbull··on Facebook Slingshot – A new way to share photos and videos
The great unbundling continues.

I understand Facebook is worried about a new trend wiping them out, but I don't see how a defensive moat of look-alikes is going to save them. Other than Messenger, are any of Facebook's new apps gaining users? Or are they like Poke — destined to be retired.
