aquova··on Sony PlayStation 2 fixing frenzy
I've seen a few posters ask already, so I figured I'd answer what the PS2 analog button's function was.

The button switches between two modes of the analog joysticks, either to behave with their normal functionality, or to simply be a digital input (so just round all movement to either up/down/left/right). For PS2 games, you typically wouldn't want to do this. Instead, the functionality exists because the PS2 was backwards compatible with PS1 titles. The original PS1 controller didn't have analog sticks at all, just the D-Pad for navigation. After a few years (and the success of Nintendo's N64 analog controller) Sony released a revised version of the controller that included two joysticks, which their controllers still mimic to this day. However, those PS1 games released prior to the analog controller wouldn't always behave correctly if you tried to use an analog input scheme, so Sony added a mode to allow the Joysticks to function the same as the D-Pad, in case players preferred it.

Other fun fact, the analog controller was not the same as their more famous Dualshock controller. There was a short-lived PS1 Dual Analog controller which just added the joysticks. It only lasted a few months before Sony replaced it with one that supported rumble functionality (also after being inspired by the N64), this was the Dualshock.

aquova··on Regarding the Compact
Regardless of what's even in the document, the core issue is the administration effectively attempting to punish universities who do not agree to whatever standards they dictate. Not because anything actually against any enacted state or federal law, or even standards set out for every university, but based on policies the executive can arbitrarily decide for a handful of schools. That's why you're seeing such push back.

As for the document itself, it's a bit of a mixed bag, with a lot of subtle gatchas to make it sound enticing on the surface, but more sinister the closer you look. I honestly like some of the proposed tuition changes, but there's some language regarding enrollment that I find problematic. However, since the whole thing is being given to them with the threat of a knife hanging over their head, you're going to see a lot of universities be opposed to this.

aquova··on Regarding the Compact
I think they completely disagree with the entire document, this is as kindly worded but complete rejection as they could make it.

aquova··on Zoxide: A Better CD Command
There's a few different versions of this same idea, I think zoxide is the third one I've used. Years ago, I started using z.lua, then switched to a fish shell plugin implementation of z, finally to zoxide. I don't think there's any real difference between them, aside from their implementation language and the ease of installation.

aquova··on Mapping to the PICO-8 palette, perceptually
An interesting article, but it seems like quite an oversight to not even mention dithering techniques, which in my opinion give much better results.

I've done some development work in Pico-8, and some time ago I wrote a plugin for the Aseprite pixel art editor to convert an arbitrary image into the Pico-8 palette using Floyd-Steinberg dithering[0]

I ran their example image through it, and personally I think the results it gives were the best of the bunch https://imgur.com/a/O6YN8S2

> Outside DualSense controller having issues connecting to bluetooth

I've had this issue as well on KDE Plasma. I'm convinced it's some sort of bug within Plasma itself. If I use bluetoothctl to pair the controller, it works fine, might be worth giving that a try if you haven't.

aquova··on Claude for Chrome
I'm honestly dumbfounded this made it off the cutting room floor. A 1 in 9 chance for a given attack to succeed? And that's just the tests they came up with! You couldn't pay me to use it, which is good, because I doubt my account would keep that money in it for long.

aquova··on Helix Editor 25.07
Sure, you can leave it in insert mode the entire time. I'm not sure that's really what you want though, as you'd effectively turn the editor into a basic notepad app.

> Other editors, if the content is not on the screen, will not perform the undo action unless the content is actually visible.

Really? What editor does this? Vim/Neovim definitely will undo the change with a single 'u' press, and every GUI editor I've ever used will undo the change immediately with a single ctrl+z.

aquova··on Plasma Bigscreen rises from the dead with a better UI
Oh this is wonderful news. I had stumbled upon Plasma Bigscreen a few years ago, and while it looked like exactly what I wanted, development was pretty dead. I shall have to take a look at running it again, it would be great as a Roku alternative
aquova··on The Book of Shaders (2015)
If you're discovering this for the first time and think it looks interesting, I shall post the customary warning to perhaps not bother. It's a well-written resource, for what's there, but it is left unfinished right where things start getting interesting and hasn't had an update in almost a decade now.
aquova··on Atuin – Magical Shell History
I've been using fish + atuin for well over a year now. I personally love it. I'm not sure if zsh or bash with atuin offers some additional features that fish doesn't, but the shell syncing and fuzzy search is enough of a value that it made it completely worth setting up for me.

aquova··on Why can't HTML alone do includes?
I 100% agree with the sentiment of this article. For my personal website, I write pretty much every page by hand, and I have a header and a footer on most of those pages. I certainly don't want to have to update every single page everytime I want to add a new navigation button to the top of the page. For a while I used PHP, but I was running a PHP server literally for only this feature. I eventually switched to JavaScript, but likewise, on a majority of my pages, this was the only JavaScript I had, and I wanted to have a "pure" HTML page for a multitude of reasons.

In the end, I settled on using a Caddy directive to do it. It still feels like a tacked on solution, but this is about as pure as I can get to just automatically "pasting" in the code, as described in the article.

My first car was a Saturn, they performed that same trick in the salesroom as well. They didn't keep that trend up forever though, in the late 2000s my father went to go purchase another Saturn, and he was reeling up to give it a kick before the salesman had to hurriedly tell him they didn't make them like that anymore.
aquova··on Why fastDOOM is fast
I wanted to comment on that as well. It dawned on me near the end of the article that all lines end exactly at a word boundary. You can tell there's some subtle kerning going on, as different lines don't line up, even though it's a monospaced font, but it's very subtle and well done.
aquova··on Trust in Firefox and Mozilla Is Gone – Let's Talk Alternatives
> If there is no alternative to supporting Mozilla, how do we keep them accountable? If they know that they're the only hope for a cross-platform browser that isn't developed by Google, then they know that any outrage is a bluff that can't have teeth because they're indispensable.

Except they're not indispensable. They're now the fourth place browser in terms of market share on a good day, and dwindling. They need all the good will they can get, and this sort of discussion amongst their most hardcore audience is exactly what keeps them accountable.
