aqueueaqueue··on Choosing death penalty by firing squad because it's safer
Yes that scenario sucks. Death penalty itself should be trial only with a super high standard of evidence.

I think I am against it in general. I am undecided.

aqueueaqueue··on Choosing death penalty by firing squad because it's safer
I'd say the main thing is police should show how all leads have been followed, the investigation followed a logical and evidence based approach and all evidence handed to defence.
aqueueaqueue··on Choosing death penalty by firing squad because it's safer
Pleading guilty has nothing to do with remorse or repentance. It's a legal thing. It is a strategic choice.
aqueueaqueue··on Ask HN: How do you manage your LinkedIn connections?
I'd love the dog ceo story. It's all this kinda stuff for me:

I used Chat GPT.

It wrote me an app.

If you are a senior engineer you need to panic.

What value are you adding to your team?

You must:

(Emoji bulleted list of trite...)

What do you think? Drop comments

aqueueaqueue··on What's the modern way of making front end for a small project?
Tailwind is one of those things you should use once you feel the pain that it solves. Start with CSS. Should be enough!
aqueueaqueue··on Athena spacecraft declared dead after toppling over on moon
They should just call it a robotic spacecraft, and then mention private company elsewhere in the sentence if they must.
aqueueaqueue··on Microsoft is plotting a future without OpenAI
But you can make it work harder by promising a tenure in 35 years time.
aqueueaqueue··on Ask HN: Are you a 40-year old software engineer without a job for > 1 year?
You need new companies to employ them. So maybe online or city based meetups to collaborate the get the new companies started.

They don't have to be startups. They can be consultancies.

aqueueaqueue··on On the criteria to be used in decomposing systems into modules (1972)
You sort of have to go along with it if you want to estimate. The perfect plan and estimate only happens after the completion date.

There are so many unknown deps and unknown opportunities to optimise at the start of a project.

You find those out as you get in the weeds and as the ICs dream a 1am about their code and bring that idea in the next day.

aqueueaqueue··on Ask HN: What less-popular systems programming language are you using?
You may like Python! At least the syntax.
aqueueaqueue··on Ask HN: What less-popular systems programming language are you using?
Does the lack of movement on Elm even in terms of bugfixes cause any issues? Maybe you use elm-janitor?
aqueueaqueue··on The US stops sharing air quality data from embassies worldwide
Politicians misusing a technical term. I doubt they mean the literal network interface cards and broadband bill. Even if they did it is more than $10. They mean the operation as a service with a human to troubleshoot.

If not, why isn't tailscale free for everyone?

aqueueaqueue··on The US stops sharing air quality data from embassies worldwide
While I agree are we gonna do that? It is like saying why does Twitter need so many people I can do that in a weekend.
aqueueaqueue··on The US stops sharing air quality data from embassies worldwide
In a free market, Doge would fire Elon.
aqueueaqueue··on The US stops sharing air quality data from embassies worldwide
It's worse. They see bad things happen, then ask the question "how do I keep my faith in Donald through this"? (Not rhetorically)
aqueueaqueue··on The Nightmare Bicycle
Thanks that made it click.

While I understand the CS concepts, I have never really thought about the developer UX before.

aqueueaqueue··on Brother accused of locking down third-party printer ink cartridges
This sort of solution appeals to me but I wonder what the trade-off is. I am now sending data about domains I visit and when to a different entity not my ISP, how do I trust them more?
aqueueaqueue··on Why fastDOOM is fast
I use VC++ in 96. Just trying to learn a bit of C++!
aqueueaqueue··on Why fastDOOM is fast
And it us easier in a non moving target.
aqueueaqueue··on The Nightmare Bicycle
Yeah but why wasn't that converted to human 1 based indexing at the machine code level or assembly in early machines?

Maybe because they didn't want to "hide the bicycle gears"?

aqueueaqueue··on Brother accused of locking down third-party printer ink cartridges
Yes but it is expensive and slow, rarely big enough for A4 (or Letter) and would be plastic. Additionally it would be maybe up to 4 colours. Not as in CYMK but as in 4 colours total no mixing.

Unless you do a lithographic print but they need a light source to be seen.

Also you can print pixels. You convert to G code so it is made up of lines.

aqueueaqueue··on Brother accused of locking down third-party printer ink cartridges
Eventually we get to the point we let nothing near the internet!
aqueueaqueue··on The Nightmare Bicycle
Hi bacteria and Lo bacteria
aqueueaqueue··on The Nightmare Bicycle
I imagine zero based indexing is because resources were scarce and number of bits low in the bad old days. Why waste that zero index. From there is was backwards compatibility.

If machine code uses zero then assembly inherits that, them C and everything else. Even JS months!

aqueueaqueue··on The Nightmare Bicycle
Then a microwave manufacturer says "do not worry about the warning saying do not use popcorn mode because our one works!"

But in seriousness don't rely on any auto turn off feature if it failing means a fire!

aqueueaqueue··on Trump's 'Crypto Reserve' Is Such Brazen Corruption
The point about being around for millennia is more about how do you measure a system where value is placed by faith. Longevity is a measure of faith. Unlike slavery, there is nothing inheritly bad or likely to change about gold any more than about bitcoin. Intact gold is backed by physics - you cannot fake it. Gold is gold. Bitcoin is one of many cryptocurrencies. Happened to be the first but that is the only distinction vs. Say litecoin.

Bitcoin is not as democratic as you suggest. Mining pools have power. Decisions get made. People are involved. It is like saying the US is not controlled by definition because there is Congress. But those people make decisions and can be heavily influenced by those with money.

aqueueaqueue··on Trump's 'Crypto Reserve' Is Such Brazen Corruption
Gold is more strategic because it has proven its value over millennia.

Bitcoin is still choosing which University to attend, and on his first date.

Bitcoin is a brand not a fixed tech. Remember when it forked?

Don't believe that Trump couldn't order Bitcoin to mint for the US. How? He is a master power broker and Bitcoin is centralized and run by humans. It is not an independent entity like, for example a coronavirus or an idea that cannot be tamed.

The big bitcoin buyers are then USA and Strategy (formerly MicroStrategy). The miners incentivised to operate in the US. The US government can now say to the coder: well, (clicks fingers), take this $10m and do what we say or don't and we will make you illegal and under arrest.

This would be well within Trump's MO and comfort zone.

aqueueaqueue··on Trump's 'Crypto Reserve' Is Such Brazen Corruption
Trump gives US money to finance drug kingpins, paedophiles, human trafficking, scammers, hackers, ponzi schemers, illegal bookmakers, money launderers, polluters and electricity stealers in countries like NK, China, Russia and at home. Amirite?
aqueueaqueue··on The cost of Go's panic and recover
Tell me the dev console option to not do that and I'll use it. I admit it has been a while since I front ended.
aqueueaqueue··on The cost of Go's panic and recover
But if that class is thrown again and again it is less useful which I see in a lot of codebases.

The go equivalent is "catch the exception when it happens here"

A debugger feature for that would be nice. I guess it is a debugger concern not an exceptions issue per se.
