aquamo··on Problems with MacBook butterfly switch keyboards
This is subjective; I don't agree, I need tactile feedback so the ESC key is no more. Like many others, I have disabled the magic bar as much as I could because it occasionally got triggered if I just glanced a finger off of it accidentally.

As an emacs user, I do the following on this box:

[CAPSLOCK] -> CTRL [LEFT CTRL] -> ESC (just like an old HP 9000 workstation keyboard lol)

The above works for me.

While the keyboard is bad on this $4000 laptop; I do love the performance, battery life, and the screen. I would never buy another one though. I suspect I will be on my 2nd key replacement any day now.

about 8 months into my experience with my 15" MBP 2016 I had the underbar-hyphen key stop working altogether. They replaced the key for me in the apple store without charging me. Glad I have apple care, I'm sure other keys will follow. Currently my right shift key is starting to get sticky feeling which was the precursor to the "-" key failing on me. I'm not impressed with the build quality considering the high cost of this machine $4000.

RIP Jerry - my first exposure to Jerry was his BYTE magazine articles.

sigh

Sad to see the loss of diversity in the operating system space. Thank you SunOS & Solaris for all the goodies over the years - Zones, ZFS, NFS, AutoFS, dtrace, etc.

I observe the Internet as an unfriendly place to study and take in information. Ads that move, shake, and make noise do so to tug at that primary fear of a predator or by exploiting the https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ventral_tegmental_area, amongst other methods. Psychologists have worked with advertising platforms like Facebook, Google, etc. to min-max and game-ify breaking our attention as much as they can. Its like they moved a really bad band and some actors into every one of our libraries and marked up all the pages with ads. The mobile platform extends the reach of these platforms. Maybe we need the computers to put us on a diet automatically; rate limiting or setting a maximum daily dose after which all ads and notifications are turned off or extremely limited. Seems like just a simple matter of programming :-)
aquamo··on Game Tales: Cray YMP (2010)
not sure if the link is broken but the article is about using the CS-6400 for a build machine, not the YMP. Generally the YMP would make a bad "build machine" - parallel vector Cray systems were slow as shit doing scalar things like compiling code. I was fortunate enough to work on 3 pre-release 6400 series machine, they were not supercomputers per se (at least in our opinion) but rather large Sun Solaris servers capable of up to 64 CPUs (a lot for the day); this line eventually turned into the E10K from Sun IIRC. We had 3 of them and once the bugs got worked out, we were able to keep them running.
