aqrashik··on Ubuntu 11.10 (Oneiric Ocelot) released
Any reason why Ubuntu just doesn't seem to make the switch to DVD based installation ISOs?

I end up burning the CD images on DVD anyway and would definitely prefer to have a larger selection of available packages on the installation media, even if I didn't end up installing some.

aqrashik··on Zynga open sources panning and zooming library for HTML and Canvas
There's no licensing information, even the source files simply have a copyright notice but no mention of the license under which it is being distributed.
aqrashik··on How Porsche hacked the financial system and made a killing (2009)
I'm curious, what happens if you can't return stock that you've borrowed in order to short it? either because of a situation like this or simply because you went bankrupt due to bad debts.

Wouldn't this be a common scenario given the very nature of the risk?

aqrashik··on Ask HN: Small product, single founder success stories?
Would you elaborate on how you promote your app? Is it solely through word of mouth and the app store itself, or through blogs, paid search, etc?

My condolences, sorry for your loss
aqrashik··on How an arcane statistical law could have prevented the Greek disaster
You're looking at it from the opposite point of view than the one I'm making.

The reason Greece didn't find people smart enough to satisfy Benford's is that Benford's wasn't being used in the audit.

If it was common knowledge that audits utilize this Law, you can bet that Greece's data would have been compatible.

aqrashik··on How an arcane statistical law could have prevented the Greek disaster
I re-read the article and you're right. The article seems to imply Madoff as an exception rather than the common case, but I still feel that if data is being manipulated at such a vast scale where an entire countries economic activity is misrepresented, you will be able to find people as smart as Madoff to 'fit' the data as per requirements.
aqrashik··on How an arcane statistical law could have prevented the Greek disaster
The issue with using Benford's Law with analysis is that as soon as people realize that you're using it, data can easily be manipulated to make it compatible.

The previous article by Tim Harford mentioned that Madoff's financial data was Benford compatible. So I doubt that using it would have actually prevented the Greek or any other disaster.

aqrashik··on Karmurl - Give Feedback on Websites to Get Feedback
Nice concept, but I tried removing my submission and re-submitting it with a proper request, but it won't let me add.

Keep getting an error that Submission could not be added :(

aqrashik··on Iran forged the wrong SSL certificate
Slightly offtopic. can anyone explain how DigiNotar revoking the wrong certificate works?

As per my understanding the browser simply trusts all certificates issued by a trusted issuing authority, so how would you revoke a single certificate?

aqrashik··on It's Time For HP To Throw The Long Bomb And License WebOS
How exactly is this different from using Android?

As long as HP makes WebOS enabled devices, wouldn't you end up with the same potential conflicts that you would have had with Google in the first place?

aqrashik··on [dead]
I'm not aware of the tax structure in Germany, but if you pay yourself a salary as an employee of your own company, shouldn't you should be paying corporate tax only on the portion left after you've deducted your salary from the profits?
aqrashik··on JQuery Mobile Beta 1 Released | jQuery Mobile
Thanks
aqrashik··on JQuery Mobile Beta 1 Released | jQuery Mobile
I've built a webapp for designing websites in jQuery Mobile at http://www.mobjectify.com

If you're using or evaluating jQM for a project, I would love to get feedback about how useful the tool would be to you.

aqrashik··on How About 30-use Free Trials Instead of 30-days?
I feel that limiting the number of uses may be counter-productive and may actually make users try it less so as to preserve the number of trials remaining and stretch out the trial.

Fixed number of days encourage people to try more knowing that their trial would expire whether they use it or not.

I have no data to back this up though and would be interested in actual results if anyone has tested the two approaches.

aqrashik··on Mobjectify - Prototype your mobile website or webapp
Nope, it was hardly a weekend app, took me quite a long time, partly because I tend to keep getting distracted by trivial stuff.

This app taught me what a MVP really means, there's a whole lot of stuff like a user and project management system, that I have coded for it which I kinda had to semi-disable so that I could just put something out there.

If I hadn't gotten so frustrated with the app seemingly never getting finished, I would have probably added a lot more features.

aqrashik··on Mobjectify - Prototype your mobile website or webapp
I agree, but the problem is that I was unable to find a suitable way to allow Rich text editing on mobile devices (atleast on iPhone and N95), so in its current form it is not very usable on mobile devices
aqrashik··on Mobjectify - Prototype your mobile website or webapp
Yes, I'm trying to figure out what would be the best way to auto-refresh changes without there being a brief blank window while the page is refreshing. Having a page repeatedly go blank when refreshing might be distractive or even irritating to the user.
aqrashik··on Mobjectify - Prototype your mobile website or webapp
Thanks for the feedback. You're right, when reloading the page, it currently does not remember the previous state so you would have to click on the individual widgets to expand them again.

Linked items can lead to other pages, you just need to click the link item and enter a page name or url in the link input. I probably need to make this more obvious somehow.

As for the addition of items on enter, it just seems to have been missed somehow, it really should be available from a usability point of view.

Thanks again for your feedback

aqrashik··on Ask HN: any way to find out how a specific site is made?
This is somewhat similar to what I had in mind, but would I be able to combine criteria?

Just as an example, what if I wanted to find the number of sites which were using MooTools and had a Twitter button on them, but not a Facebook like button.

aqrashik··on Ask HN: How do you compensate your users for downtime
Could you please let me know whom I should contact to change this?
aqrashik··on Ask HN: any way to find out how a specific site is made?
Slightly unrelated, but sometimes I really wish there was a search engine which would allow you to search the source of a website instead of the output.

That way you could easily find data about all websites using a particular jQuery plugin, or all websites having a tweet button and so forth.

Would be quite useful for analysis purposes and to gauge the popularity of various frameworks, etc.
