aqme28··on It may soon be possible to create "mirror life"
Yes, but there are more sugars than just glucose
aqme28··on It may soon be possible to create "mirror life"
"people will do ANYTHING to cure a disease"

Or to make a couple of bucks. Reading that mirror-image sugars could work as calorie-free sweeteners feels like foreshadowing for the end of the world.

aqme28··on Google Playground: Create and play custom games
I'm not the first one to have this one for sure. I would have started working on this if not for the small problem of finding it unethical to build :(
aqme28··on Google Playground: Create and play custom games
How long until someone makes a tiktok-style game platform?

Play a little game, then when you're done it generates a new one based on what you've enjoyed. Repeat ad infinitum.

Isn't that just the recent highly controversial Chat Control push? Generally speaking, the EU has some quite strong privacy protections relative to the US.
aqme28··on German Bundeswehr uses AI to screen applicants for right-wing extremism
Are you trying to say that "remigrating all migrants from certain countries" is not actually extreme?
aqme28··on US closely monitoring case of lab worker who possibly died of plague in Siberia
Similar to the cruise-ship Hantavirus situation earlier this year. People see a disease they've never encountered and assume it's a novel pandemic. Really, it's just one of the rare cases where a westerner contracts a disease that's endemic to the global poor.
aqme28··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
I think with iOS you can do this pretty straightforwardly
aqme28··on Returning from vacation? The government can search your phone without a warrant
He didn't say to vote for dems.
aqme28··on Gemini 4 Argon
As we’ve seen from the leaked Anthropic prospectus, revenue from actual users is a pittance. What really matters is what you can get from investors, and that you have a model smart enough for self-improvement.
aqme28··on Prompting Claude Opus 5.5
Why is this not just baked into the system prompt? I shouldn’t have to know these details.
aqme28··on Plan mode is dead
I was thinking of making (locally) an “artifact mode” along those same lines. It’s a much better way to see proposed changes
aqme28··on Israeli Minister Threatens Filmmakers' Citizenship over Gaza Documentary
This site is not limited to "tech news." https://news.ycombinator.com/newsguidelines.html

Though to be fair I think this article still might not qualify.

aqme28··on Watch AI materials-science and bioscience abilities closely
An AI doesn't need to kill even nearly 100% of humanity in order to render us a non-threat.

Also there are plenty of doomer scenarios along the lines of e.g. some ethnosupremacist cult making a virus that kills everyone outside of their group.

aqme28··on We must pace the frontier
It's weird that we have two parallel discussions and they're not meeting in the obvious middle.

OpenAI is out there hacking HF, RubyGems, etc...

Dario is talking about restricting the frontier, pausing development.

The problem is that "restricting the frontier" benefits no one as much as the frontier labs. But there are other ways to force alignment-- make companies liable for these felonies their agents commit.

Make them liable, and they might actually devote the necessary resources to fixing these problems, rather than throwing their hands up and just saying "Trust nobody buy us", which obviously no one does.

aqme28··on The EPA Is Planning to Scrap Public Review Rules for Data Center Pollution
So-- basically until the next administration. Interesting timing.
aqme28··on Detecting and countering misuse of AI: September 2026
We're not there quite yet, but I think within the decade at this pace it may be possible to create targeted bioweapons for purposes of targeted assassination or genocide. It's horrifying, but a world in which everyone has a superintelligence is a world where that will sometimes happen.
aqme28··on Growing proof that autonomous cars save lives
A lot of the Netherlands was rebuilt postwar in the 50s with exactly the kind of car-centric design you're talking about. But then in the 70s they realized their mistake and started to reverse it.

What I'm saying is-- don't be defeatist about this. In places where density is high enough (maybe not LA sprawl), you can fix this.

aqme28··on iPhone Duo
Trying to figure out what demographic this is for and I'm coming up empty. Any ideas?

It's too small to replace my ipad, too big to replace my phone. Seems too fragile for kids, plus they don't need that. Maybe it's good for the elderly?

aqme28··on AirPods 5
Yes, same. But these ones don't have eartips, so we are going to have to wait for the Pro version if we want these.
aqme28··on Apple Unveils iPhone Duo
I also have huge hands, but a few years ago started to develop a persistent thumb sprain due “reaching” with it across my phone. This is problem that would not have happened if my phone was the size they used to be.
aqme28··on How an MIT research project became the Julia programming language
I love multiple dispatch and I wish more languages had it
aqme28··on Elevated Errors for Multiple Models
This pushed me off of a cheaper model into a more expensive one :'(
aqme28··on Fish Bad, Sugar Good and Other Medieval Ideas About Food
Paleo diets are passé. The new fad diet is medieval. And frankly the science isn't any worse.
aqme28··on Fish Bad, Sugar Good and Other Medieval Ideas About Food
It's interesting how some of these came to the right conclusions (given sanitary standards at the time) but for entirely the wrong reasons. A lot of the food that was unhealthy was food that could go bad quickly or carry illnesses
aqme28··on Muse Spark 1.3
I agree, though I wonder how much of that is just that Dario is the "newest" of the bunch, and as such has had the least time to develop public baggage.
aqme28··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
And a lot more from subsequent months, but I don't think it's a problem that this wildly successful videogame made its developers decently rich.
aqme28··on Dwarf Fortress is getting the mother of all magic updates
"first month" is really obscuring the decade or beforehand. That's 20 years of development before the premium version launched
aqme28··on Claude Session URL appended to commit messages and PR descriptions by default
Interesting. Can you elaborate on why you feel strongly about this? It's easily removable--I don't think your characterization that it "forces" attribution is correct, it just defaults it.
