aqfamnzc··on The size of BYD's factory
I wonder if (partially) they use discharge current from one batch of batteries to charge the next?
aqfamnzc··on Niantic plans a “Large Geospatial Model” trained on Pokémon Go player data
Agreed. I mostly meant that I'll never see the actual dataset that I contributed to. That's why I'd prefer to spend my time on things that I can see, like OpenStreetMap :)

Welcome to the modern internet. While you're at it, please get me access to Google's captcha models facebook face directory Google's GPS location data hoard, (most every android phone on the planet 24/7 (!) and any iPhone navigating with gmaps) And so on and so on

All of which I've directly contributed to and never (directly) recieved anything in return

Sounds like maybe you were doing something like this? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=42184069
aqfamnzc··on The withering dream of a cheap American electric car
Money. The insurance company gives a discount. And honestly, for someone who doesn't share my same strong values for privacy, I don't blame them!
aqfamnzc··on Maybe Bluesky has "won"
Wait, did I miss something that happened just over a week ago?
aqfamnzc··on New iMac with M4
Putting the plug on the bottom is an intentional choice by Apple. It's because they don't want you to plug it in to charge, then never remember to unplug it. Mandatory wirelessness.
aqfamnzc··on Hetzner Object Storage
Looks like juicefs objbench. https://juicefs.com/docs/community/performance_evaluation_gu...
aqfamnzc··on Ask HN: Should you reply STOP to unwanted texts?
What is CONTACT?
aqfamnzc··on Dead Internet (2023)
I'm in the same boat. Although I suppose I tried giving out as little legitimate information about myself as possible, so honestly I don't blame them too much for detecting somehow and blocking it (in my case specifically...)
aqfamnzc··on Your Immune System Is Not a Muscle
Wait, is that how viruses work? Is a parent guaranteed to pass on viral illness to their children (genetically) then?
aqfamnzc··on How de-Googled is Lineage OS?
Ad relevance is just an ad's ability to manipulate you.
aqfamnzc··on We don't know how bad most things are nor precisely how they're bad
I think about this when cooking. There are 1000 variables like ingredient choice, prep methods, spices used, cook time. Changing one produces an effect too small for me to discern. But when I make suboptimal choices on 20 different variables, they stack up to produce a dish that's noticeably worse. :( How can I do science and improve my skills when I can't observe the difference changing one dimension makes!?
aqfamnzc··on Linux desktop market share climbs to 4.45%
Which browser?
aqfamnzc··on 'Rare species' not seen in the area for 50 years spotted on Arizona trail camera
It's because if they include the prize, people will spend more time reading the article.
aqfamnzc··on Examples of Great URL Design (2023)
I believe amazon does something similar for product pages. The `/dp/` is the product id that really matters.
aqfamnzc··on SponsorBlock – skip sponsor segments on YouTube
Yes, they added comment replies functionality a little while ago.
aqfamnzc··on Is a 'slow' swimming pool impeding world records?
Given the other comments I must be missing something, but wouldn't it be pretty much fair? The end swimmer gets one real neighbor and one simulated (reflection) neighbor from the wall. The middle folks have two real neighbors creating chop.
aqfamnzc··on Apple introduces M4 chip
Yeah, apparently some people book flights from their phones!? Nah man, that's a laptop activity. I'd never spend more than a couple hundred dollars on my phone. Haha
aqfamnzc··on Watch cars evolve using genetic algorithm
Reminds me of a phenomenal Android app called Cell Lab where you could create all kinds of multi- or single-celled organisms to live in a petri dish. You could crank up the radiation levels to let things mutate and evolve if so desired.
aqfamnzc··on Feathers are one of evolution's cleverest inventions
Emergence?
aqfamnzc··on Meta Llama 3
Hopefully they aren't able to cram it down our legislators' throats... Seems that's what really matters
aqfamnzc··on Feathers are one of evolution's cleverest inventions
Wow, amazing. Why does this work? I would think that the nail bed has no knowledge of what the end of the nail is shaped like.
aqfamnzc··on Fairbuds: In-ear with replaceable batteries
The sideways force on the connector while in my pocket has always been a real concern to me. It's the main thing keeping me from regularly using a dongle.
aqfamnzc··on Fairbuds: In-ear with replaceable batteries
Any recs for a low-cost pair?
aqfamnzc··on When a black hole and a neutron star merge
My county started offering tours of our new water treatment plant. I HIGHLY recommend doing that in your area if you get the opportunity!
aqfamnzc··on Home insurers are dropping customers based on aerial images
No, it's still very valuable since I'll never have to pay out of pocket for that million-dollar incident. The point isn't to save money, it's to distribute the incident payments over a long term.
aqfamnzc··on An AI robot is spotting sick tulips to slow disease through Dutch bulb fields
Hardware is hard. That and the fact that AI is still bleeding edge - I'm not surprised at all that LLMs, image generation, etc. is what companies are jumping for right now.
aqfamnzc··on Show HN: Detecting adblock, without JavaScript, by abusing HTTP 103 responses
I've successfully removed ads from basically my whole life, but now when I do happen to see one I'm less conditioned to ignore it. So boy oh boy do I notice. I kind of hate it. My eye is immediately drawn to anything flashy or moving, to the point where I'll make an effort to sit facing away from any TV screen in a restaurant.
aqfamnzc··on Hackers found a way to open any of 3M hotel keycard locks
Not that it really matters, but I found it interesting thinking of ways this could be broken...
