apurvadave··on Fishing for Hackers: Analysis of a Linux Server Attack (2014)
Another good honeypot story, this one using Sysdig Falco as an intrusion detection engine:

Sysdig inspect (which does the Forensics in these examples) is open source. https://github.com/draios/sysdig-inspect

You can do the same rule - based activity detection through Falco which is also open source. https://github.com/draios/falco

Note that both of these open source projects originate from Sysdig as well.

apurvadave··on Sysdig Inspect: A GUI for System Call Analysis
For some reason pricing isn’t showing up on the nav of the mobile site , whereas it does on desktop. Apologies for that. We’ll fix it shortly.
apurvadave··on Sysdig Inspect: A GUI for System Call Analysis
Odd - I'll take a look at the navigation issue, and thanks for the feedback on the open source pricing statement.
apurvadave··on Sysdig Inspect: A GUI for System Call Analysis
Sysdig Inspect is fully open source. https://github.com/draios/sysdig-inspect

Sysdig's commercial security and monitoring products do have pricing pages within the top navigation as well : https://sysdig.com/product/monitor/pricing/

apurvadave··on Sysdig Inspect: A GUI for System Call Analysis
I'm not sure if this fully answers your question, but Loris (the sysdig creator) wrote up a technical analysis of sysdig vs dtrace vs strace a while ago.

https://sysdig.com/blog/sysdig-vs-dtrace-vs-strace-a-technic...

It's worth a read.

Actually sysdig can do application, container, host, network. Most of sysdig use cases tend to be more focused on the software running on a node vs the network itself.

apurvadave··on Managing SELinux with Puppet
The feeling you describe here is part of what led to the design of Sysdig Falco (http://www.sysdig.org/falco). While certainly not a 1:1 SELinux replacement, our goal was to use a much simpler, understandable model for describing & monitoring security policies for linux hosts.

apurvadave··on Escape Artist Houdini Was an Ingenious Inventor, but Didn't Want Anybody to Know
I never knew of houdini's relationships to patents. Seems like an interesting case where they don't really protect your work.
apurvadave··on Prometheus reaches 1.0
For tracing check out sysdig's new 'tracers' functionality. Tracing for Microservices, transactions, all the way down to system calls. www.sysdig.org
apurvadave··on A house that costs $20k
It seems like there are lot of comments about how this kind of house wouldn't work (yes, this won't work in downtown NYC). But it also seems like there are lots of communities - poor, displaced - that would benefit massively. I'm a big fan of projects like this, even if they only serve to push the innovation of affordable housing further.
apurvadave··on Ask HN: Anything better than Tableau for data viz, dashboards?
A new product you could take a look at is http://www.jut.io. It's in beta / free for anyone.

It's a streaming analytics development environment, and uses d3 for visualization. It ingests both events and metrics.

It's based on a high-level dataflow processing language that allows you to process your data flexibly (moving window analytics, anomaly detection, general statistical processing). you can build interactive apps & dashboards and control which facets users can manipulate.

aaand here's the disclosure - I work at Jut and run customer success.

apurvadave··on Ask HN: What startups are working on hard, technically challenging problems?
I work in the data analytics space, so I'll focus there since many of the other answers give a good, broad set of companies to consider.

* Trifacta (http://www.trifacta.com/) are dealing with the very grungy problem of data transformation. Their approach is heavily UX-centric, with built-in predictive capabilities that learn what you are doing as you try to transform disparate data sets to meet your needs.

* Segment (http://www.segment.com) acts as a data router, allowing you to implement significantly less data plumbing in your application while allowing you to deliver your data to many different analytics tools.

* Jut (http://www.jut.io) is a full-stack approach to building a hub for streaming data. They take any operations data (logs, metrics, alerts, events) as inputs, manage storage and analysis, and have creating a framework for streaming visualizations as well. Technologies include an in-browser, retargetable compiler, a streaming analytics layer, storage (elastic search and cassandra), A d3-based visualization framework designed for 3rd party add-ons, and a simpler way to manage large-scale data called hybrid SaaS. (disclosure: I work here.)

* Databricks (http://www.databricks.com) has implemented apache Spark as a service.

apurvadave··on Ask HN: Do you spend too much time on Content Dissemination for your startup?
We're a relatively new startup (jut.io). At this point our focus is much more on creating good content, getting our voice right etc. Our main distribution vehicles are those we control - twitter, fb, linkedin, etc.

We have begun to do things like guest posts and think about hacker news as a potential distribution vehicle. I suspect as we get closer to operating "at scale" we will have the exact challenge you describe - distribution becomes more important to move the needle for content marketing.

apurvadave··on Buzz Aldrin: The Dark Side of the Moon
Pretty sad that the media chews up and spits out guys like Buzz.
apurvadave··on Graph everything with Graphite
We are working on building a system that combines events and metrics (www.jut.io), and one of the things we've been thinking about is how to store metadata about your metrics. It's not only stuff like min/max values, but almost anything you could think of - developer, feature name, expected frequency, etc. Would a concept like this be useful?
apurvadave··on Introducing Jut's Analytics Platform for DevOps
Cool stuff. Like the streaming charts.
