aprvchndrs··on Sonos: Working with big tech sucks
> The article still has no answer on why it is so difficult to actually get a Sonos to play nice with the two interfaces supplied by Amazon and Google

This is answered in the article. That's what GhettoMaestro is talking about. Specifically - Google said that it would pull Assistant support if Sonos added support to simultaneously listen for Alexa. That's the answer as to why they don't support 2 competing interfaces. Not a technical decision - but looks more like a business decision from Google.

Even if you disregard bullying - this seems like a way for Google to assert exclusivity.

>APIs that every consumer can hookup with IFTTT

This only works if the API is open enough to use. I somehow don't think Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant agreements with third-parties would support that.

>With wired headphones, people can keep them for years, decades even.

With quality over-ear headphones with easy to replace parts ? Sure.

With in-ear earphones? Depends on the user. Many people I know tend to break/fray the cable or lose them atleast once a year. Most in-ear earphones were used as a semi-disposable item.

aprvchndrs··on Firefox 72.0
PiP worked in Safari with an extension[0] right? That's why I was still using it for YouTube streaming in the background.

I've switched to Firefox on almost every other platform (apart from iOS). with Firefox 72, I've switch to Firefox only on MacOS as well.

Finally Picture in Picture on MacOS.

The last reason for me to keep using Safari/Chrome is gone.

aprvchndrs··on Google's Monopoly-Based Foreign Policy
And a lot of people give Google that power.

Which means Google holds a lot of soft power in the eyes of the government.

> Nobody needs to move alcohol or tobacco - it’s always going to be available at your destination unless it’s banned in which case you still couldn’t import.

This isn’t necessarily true. Many great whiskeys and spirits aren’t necessarily available to purchase in other countries. Another commenter mentioned the case of Japan. Many great whiskeys and sake produced in Japan aren’t available to buy in other countries.

Apart from that there is a matter of taxes.

aprvchndrs··on Floatplane – Linus Tech Tips launches their own video hosting platform
> So it's like YouTube but you have to pay a subscription for every channel? Ugh.

I think it’s more of a Patreon alternative focused on delivering video.

> Secondly, creator-centric platforms don't pay off. Platforms bring the audience, creators bring the content. Platforms make creators, not the other way around. No creator got from zero to hero without a platform that has attained critical mass. That mass isn't attained by catering to the creators, but to the audience. The audience doesn't care about creators until the platform introduces them.

You are thinking of this as a YouTube alternative. It’s not.

It’s a supplementary platform that is creator focused. They are not making this for discovery. LTT put out a video explaining this.

This is more of a Patreon alternative. A place to support creators - and for creators to fall back to in case YouTube shuts down monetization.

aprvchndrs··on Bloomberg just bought CityLab and put half its reporters out of a job
That context seems very important - completely changes my initial opinion.

It's a difficult choice. I would have liked him to say that Bloomberg Media should be free to write pieces showing his shortcomings - but its not very realistic of me to expect that.

I'm not sure if I would have the same opinion - but his PoV sounds very human. I'm not sure if I would have liked my employees causing issues for me either, if I was in his position.

aprvchndrs··on Keybase cancels Stellar token airdrop
That’s actually a fair point.

I hadn’t considered Keybase as a platform for freelance work. If Stellar is supposed to tie in with their Teams, Files and Git offerings - that makes much more sense.

But the airdrops just felt off to me. Last time I checked the github issues page - I saw half dozen issues raised just asking for airdrop info.

aprvchndrs··on Keybase cancels Stellar token airdrop
I love Keybase for the ability to link together multiple identities together.

I use keybase with two profiles. One which is linked to my IRL identity. And one which is linked to my internet identity.

The Stellar offering seemed really odd to me - because it seemed so outside of its core functionality. Almost scammy.

Then I read an article on Ars Technica about a flood of scammers and that sort of connected the two dots. The Stellar offering seems to have flooded them with more “people” than they can handle.
