75% blue and 25% brown: "Brue eyes"

Or maybe take a weighted average of RGB values and convert to a word, which would give "teal eyes". Radical.

The model M is my favorite keyboard and I own a stash of them large enough to last me for my whole life. That is to say, I own one model M keyboard.
apricot··on Is this the simplest (and most surprising) sorting algorithm?
Holy shit. I independently invented... well, not quite "invented", more like "stumbled into" this algorithm when I was in elementary school learning Applesoft BASIC, and wanted to sort an array of numbers. I had no clue how to do it and just intuited there had to be two loops, one inside the other. I got the comparison wrong, saw that it sorted backwards, and just changed > to < without asking myself why it worked.

apricot··on Computational algebraic geometry for high school students
> In short, we need to stop conflating logical foundation with pedagogical foundation.

YES. I want to put this on a T-shirt and strut around wherever they write high school math curricula.

By Steven K. Roberts, famous for being one of the first high-profile "technomads". I remember reading his "Computing Across America" series on GEnie, back in the day. He had a high-tech bicycle and wrote email using a chording handlebar keyboard with 8 keys (4 on a side) that he used to input raw ASCII into his computer.

If we start mandating that managers be competent we're going to lose a large proportion of managers.
apricot··on Timeline of Mathematics
One amazing thing to me is how you can go from the beginnings of calculus to today in only five jumps from mathematicians who were alive at the same time, e.g.

Newton — Euler — Gauss — Poincaré — Turing — Yau

An old C. F. Gauss could have met baby Henri Poincaré, yet in my mind they live in completely different universes.

Reading Knuth is always enjoyable, no matter what he writes about. There's something about his writing style that always brings me joy, even when he's writing about stuff I don't really care about.

It looks like they were trying to meet a dual quota of non-white, non-male people.

(Also, Yau is there.)

apricot··on Bad Apple on an Apple //e: playing video on a stock 1 MHz Apple II [video]

The transcoder that he wrote to convert the source video to a 90 MB 6502 program that draws the animation is pretty nifty too: there's no time to update the whole screen between frames, so he diffs them and updates as many pixels as he can, starting with the ones that are most noticeable according to a perceptual distance metric. Sure. I'm a good speller but there are a few words that I learned the wrong way and had a blind spot for. I discovered I had been spelling them wrong all my life when Word kept underlining them in red.

In related news, Japanese teachers lament the fact that predictive text entry systems on their students' phones mean that they don't know how to write kanji anymore. They can recognize them, but don't have enough practice to write them consistently anymore.

Not a terribly important question in the grand scheme of things, but what's the rationale behind making the \ key and the Enter key touch each other? I've seen it on other keyboards as well and cannot imagine what's gained by doing it.

Because if they did that, users would be able to replace them.
